Deputy. 3tMI SUPER BOARD OFF TO A SUPER START On the evening of February 8. the leaders of eight public and private organizations in the Walkerton area did something veryunusual - they all met in the same room. The Walkerton industrial Fund. Walkerton Chamber of Commerce. Walkerton Town Council. Walkerton Redevelopment Commission. John Glenn School Corporation Board. Walkerton Park Board. Walkerton Plan Commission and Walkerton Board of Zoning Appeals, collectively known as the Walkerton Area Superboard, held their first planning session at the John Glenn High School. Snack food and refreshments were provided by United Telephone Company. The group was asked two basic questions by moderator David Behr. Executive Director of the Industrial Fund: First, what types of growth can Walkerton best support based on the area's needs, and secondly, what has to be accomplished to obtain that type of growth? Before the evening was over, the group had compiled a list of 40 proposed businesses, services and programs that they felt would be immediately successful in the community. The eight boards all agreed to meet quarterly to insure their individual board actions would keep the same common focus. Nine items were highlighted by Superboard as being critical to continuing the ongoing development in Walkerton: more park and recreation facilities; new apartment and housing construction at all price levels; renovation of protions of the West York neighborhood; public or private day care centers; an enhanced 911 emergency service located in Walkerton; further extentions of municipal utilities; adult education opportunities; cooperation with Koontz Lake and North Liberty in festivals and promotions; and increased public awareness of the opportunities and quality of life available in the Walkerton area. "Not many people realize Walkerton contains 27 industries with customers across the country. 48 local businesses, an award winning school corporation, and that Walkerton also acts as a suburb to Plymouth and LaPorte. as well as South Bend,” said Behr, “but the word is starting to spread....”
Johnson Twp. Extension Club To Purchase Fans Plans were made to purchase two ceiling fans for the Johnson Twp. Community Building by members of the Johnson Twp. Extension Homemakers Gub on Wednesday at their regular meeting. President Cathy Hostetler will check into costs to pruchase the fans and have them installed. Mrs. Hostetler thanked members for the donations of cash and pies for the recent farm sale which she reported as most successful. Freida Meyer gave an interesting lesson. "Focus on Government" and explained the decisionmaking processes in LaPorte County. At a later date she will relate the lives of women in history as she gives the lesson, "Indiana Women.” It was announced that Annette Hesters and Josephine Smith would take the lesson on ethnic cooking March 19. The topic will be the South Pacific. Hostesses for the dav were Mrs. Hostetler and Carolyn Bierly and also Ethel Bierly who was not able to be present. D<x»r prizes were awarded Mrs. Alta Andrews and Miss Meyer. The next meeting will be a 12:30 pot luck dinner at the community building. Each member is asked to bring a guest, their own table service, and a dish to pass. Members are invited to a meeting of the Better Homes Gub which is now to be Monday. March 26. at 7:00 p.m.. at the Walkerton Community Building. The regular date was changed because of the weather. GOLD WING RIDERS MEET The Gold Wing Riders Association Chapter K-2 met at the Plymouth Pizza Hut. on February
13 for its monthly meeting. "Wings of Gold" was chosen as the chapter name. Jim Doll presented some safety situations for all to think about. The 50'50 winner was Jack Koser and the door prize was won by Phil Aitken. Orders for chapter shirts arc being taken by Christine Kitch. Raffle ticket sales for 1990 Gold Wing began. Motorcycle riders and experienced riders classes were announced. For more information call Dan or Christine Kitch at 342-4996. The next meeting will be held at the Indiana Express Truck Stop. Bourbon, on March 8 with supper at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting at 7:30 p.m. ON DEAN’S LIST Two University of Evansville students from Walkerton are among 425 students named to the Dean's List for outstanding academic achievement during the 1989 spring semester. They are Mary Singleton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Singleton and Wcndv Voth. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Voth. To attain the Dean's List, a student must have earned a 3.5 or better grade point average while carring 12 or more hours of credit. FIRE SCHOOL HELD IN WALKERTON The Walkerton Fire Department held a state certified fire school on February 10. 11, and 17. Several fire departments in the county sent their new recruits to Walkerton for three days of training. The new recruits were taught several hours of training with ladders, air packs, ventilation, forcible entry, personal safety, hazardous materials, hoses and hose loads. The school is required by the State of Indiana for all new firemen in the state. ENGAGED Mr. Gaude Gorby. Jr.. North Liberty proudly announces the engagement of his daughter. Laura J.
