JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES REGULAR SESSION CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on Tuesday. February 20. at 7:30 p.m. in the libran of Walkerton Elementary School. All members of the Board were present except for Nilas Miller. 134 observers joined the Board tn the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Jean Ann Beem moved approval of the minutes from the February 6. regular session. This motion was seconded by Man Kas Stedman and approved by a vote of six to zero. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS - *0224 *0313 After discussion of claims. Mr. haney withdrew claim *25“’.01 based on a question from Mr. Millar as to why an item was being charged to the general fund instead of being charged to the transpor tation fund. A motion to approve the remaining claims was made by William Millar, seconded bv Donald Ludwig and approved bv a vote of six to zero. PATRON RESPONSE John Hostrawser spoke to the Board concerning the presentation of petitions which he had collected in support of Richard Kickbush. Mr. Hostrawser offered to present the petitions to the Board and read the statement at the top of the petition which called on the Board to reinstate Dick Kickbush to his present teaching position. Mr. Hostrawser said that the petitions contained more than 900 signatures. After discussion about the petitions and whether or not they should be submitted at the regular Board meeting or at the public hearing scheduled for February 21, Mr. Harvey stated that he had no objection if they were presented at the School Board meeting as well. Mr. Hostrawser then indicated that he would present the petitions at the hearing on February 21. Martin Master read a prepared statement concerning the issue of corporal punishment. Mr. Master stated that he hoped that the Board of School Trustees would consider a ban on corporal punishment in the school corporation and stated a number of reasons why he supported that position. Gary Crone spoke to the Board concerning his views and those of other North Liberty parents concerning the most recent proposal for the middle school project. Mr. Crone read a prepared statement which he also distributed to the Board raising a number of points about the wisdom of closing the North Liberty Elementary School and the impact that it would have on the North Liberty area as well as on the school corporation. He urged the Board to make all information available concerning these proposals before the Board makes a decision He also urged the Board to conduct public hearings so that proper input can be received. ' The future of our state is directly dependant upon the quality of our educational system.” said Mangus. ”1 am glad I had the chance to honor someone from our district who exemplifies Indiana’s educational values.” The meeting with Evans gave the educators an opportunity to voice comments and concerns directlv with the state’s lop education official. In the afternoon, the educators observed the legislative session.

KINOERGAROEN ENROLLMENT SET AT W.E.S. Walkerton Elementary is now taking enrollment information for next year’s Kindergarten Enrollment must be concluded bv March 30. Parents mav come to the school office or mail in a form for enrollment of your child. To be eligible for Kindergarten the child must be five years old on or before July Ist. A legal birth certificate is required, not a hospital certificate, at the time of enrollment. If you do not have a birth certificate write or contact the health department in the countv in which vour child was bom. During the month of Mav call the office for an appointment to have your child tested. All students are screened at Kindergarten entrance. All incoming students are required to have a physical. You mav pick up the forms at the office between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. anv day. Urey To Host Basketball Tourney At. N.L. Urey seventh and eighth grade basketball teams will be hosting a tourney, on Saturday, March 3. Participating in the tourney are Jimtown. New Prairie. South Central and Urey. Games will be played at the North Liberty School. The seventh grade matches are as follows, at 9:00 a.m Urey and Jimtown will meet in the main gym and New Prairie and South Central will be in the multi purpose room with the championship game at 1:00 in the main gym. The eighth grade games will be held at 10:30 a m with Urey and Jimtown meeting in the main gym and New Prairie and South Central in the multi-purpose gym. The championship game will be at 2:30 p.m. in the main gym. Admission is $2.00 for adults; SI.OO for students and pre-school are admitted free of charge. Tickets are good for all games, all day. Food and snacks will be available. SECTIONAL FAN BUS INFORMATION Wednesday. February — Glenn plays Bremen at 6:30 p.m. The fan bus will leave Tyner and North Liberty at 5:30 and Glenn at 5:45. If the team advances they will play on Friday. March 2 at 8:00 p.m. The fan bus will leave Tyner and North Liberty at 5:30 and Glenn at 5:45. Section Os U.S. 6 Closed To Traffic Until March 9 The Indiana Department of Transportation will be closing a section of U S. 6 in St. Joseph and Marshall Counties. Beginning Monday. Februarv 26. that stretch of highway from the north junction of S R 23 in Walkerton to U.S. 31 will be closed to traffic. The purpose of this closure is for the Norfolk and Western Railroad to rebuild the crossing located 1.5 miles southeast of the east junction of S R 23 in W alkerton During this closure, traffic will be detoured across S.R. 23. S.R 4 and U.S. 31. Work is expected to be completed and the road reopened on Friday. March 9. Until then, motorists should be aware that this rerouting adds 9.3 miles driving distance. LEAGUE BASEBALL AND T-BALL REGISTRATION Registration for the 1990 season will be held on two Saturdays. March 3 and March 10. from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. The registration will be held m the Walkerton Youth Building. Age requirements are as follows: T-ball: 5-7 years old before May 1; Minor League: 8-10 years old before May 1 and Major League: 11-13 years old before May 1. Fees for the 1990 season are $15.00 for one person, $25.00 for two and $5.00 per each additional person from the same family.
