STILL KING IN INDIANA Basketball is still king in Indiana. This coming week the 1990 state tournament will open at 64 sites around the state as the almost 400 teams all join in the chase for the title of State Champion! Indiana is unique in the fact they still have only one state championship to crown. They have shunned the temptation to go to class basketball, which, according to many people, gives the smaller schools a chance at the title. This is true but there is still something about the present set-up that is missing in class basketball. It doesn’t take that much of a memory to remember the Plymouth victory in 1982, Argos making the trip to the final four in the late ’7os and certainly the Milan victory in the early 1950 s that inspired the movie “Hoosiers”. Add to this the thrill of the many from the smaller school as they advance in their given years through the sectionals, regionals and occasionally the semi-states. Just competing in this tourney remains a memory for most even though every year all but one school bows out as a loser on the scoreboard. The John Glenn Falcons enter the 1990 tourney at Plymouth as the defending champion. They have another very fine basketball team this year and take a 15-3 record into their season finale Friday night. The sectional title is the last of three goals they sought, two having been very hotly contested and lost to the Bremen Lions. The Nothern State Conference is always a number one priority, but Bremen edged the Falcons out for this title. The Bi-County Tourney title is another highly sought prize, but again, Bremen edged the Falcons on their way to winning this title. And ironically, they are the Falcons first round opponents Wednesday night in the opening game at Plymouth. We wish the John Glenn Falcons and coach Gordon Mosson the best of luck in this year’s well balanced tourney and hope that a week from Saturday night they will again bring home the championship and the right to advance on in what is still the greatest high school tournament in the nation. High school basketball is still king in Indiana. It is also a refreshing breath of air to watch, listen to and read about the accomplishments of these kids, who all gain something by competing in this tournament. Win or lose on the scoreboard, they are all winners in the long run in the game of life.

The former church was built in 1860 and used until the new one in 1907. The Walkerton Methodist Church was first established in this area with 1844 with Rev. Daniel Crumpacker as its first preacher. This was 13 years before the Town of walkerton was laid out and seven years before a post office was established at West York. In 1860 the congregation erected a new frame building in Walkerton, located at the corner of Van Buren and Indiana Streets. This was a low. one-story frame building with a small belfry over the front. Twenty-six years later. 1886. an addition was built. 20 x 40 feet, which served the congregation for 46 years. Under the pastorate of Homer P. Ivey, a new cobble-stone church was erected in 1906-07, with a cost of $15,000 in cash, plus much donated labor. Through a disastrous fire on the night of February 19. 1936 this building was razed to the ground with an estimated loss of $35,000. The present building was completed in 1937. under the ministry of Rev. Walter Wilson. In 1922-23. during the pastorate of Rev. J W Niell. the congregation replaced its parsonage with a new one at a cost of $5,200. The church observed its 100th anniversary in 1944 under the ministry of Rev. W. Ray Kuhn. Other ministers who served the church include George S. Reedy, William Hargrave. FJ. Beisel. C.B. Stanforth. Henry M. Braun. AS. Warriner. L.N. Campbell. Stanley Howell. Harold Hotchkiss. Harold Williams. Chester Mayflower. Thoma* Bowman and the present minister Marilvn Gebert. On March 30. 1969. at 2:00 p.m.. broke ground for their new church. The new church will be located across from the new John Glenn HiKh School on Georgia Street. — photo courtesy of Evelyn Norris. Rt. 5.
