FALCONS FALL TO BREMEN RALLY; SECOND IN N.S.C. After jumping to a 20-0 lead just 10 seconds into the second quarter, the John Glenn Falcons lost an opportunity to tic for first place in the Northern State Conference as the Bremen Lions fought back hard to take a 28-20 victory from Glenn Friday night. This was the final game of the regular season for both teams and Glenn and Knox entered the game tied with 5-1 conference records. Bremen had a 4-2 record, losing their last two conference games (which we mis-reported in last week’s article, crediting the Lions with a win over Jimtown instead of a loss). The Lions come from behind victory over Glenn, coupled with Knox's come from behind win of their own at New Prairie, gave the Redskins the outright conference crown with a 6-1 record. Glenn, Bremen and Jimtown all tied for second, third and fourth with a 5-2 mark in conference play and Glenn and Bremen both ended the regular season with a 5-3 mark. Sectional action begins this Friday night. Bremen earned (his victory. One must remember they were the runner up in the state in Class A last vear to Sheridan and despite many years of playing in a conference with much larger schools, have a rich foot ball tradition. They out gained the Falcons over 2-1 in yards from scrimmage and used both some steady play and the big play to account for the disappointing come from behind victory as far as Falcon fans are concerned. Taking the opening kickoff at his own 14 yard line, Aaron West headed straight up the middle, found a hole and broke through to outrace everyone for an 86 yard kickoff return. An attempt for two points on a run failed, but with just 10 ticks off the clock, Glenn held a 6-0 lead in this big ballgame. After getting the ball back when Bremen couldn’t move the ball, it was another score coming rapidly as John Johnson hit Bryan Vandall with a scoring pass to end another drive successfully. Rick O’Connor then ran the extra points in and with 4:35 showing on the clock, the Falcons were out in front 14-0. The fun wasn't over yet. On the first play of the second quarter, after holding Bremen once again, Johnson hit the speedy West with a pass that found the plav covering 56 yards over all and another TD for a 20-0 lead. This time a kick was missed, but in 12 minutes and 10 seconds the Falcons had dominated the hometown Lions and looked to be on their way. The Lions just weren't about to quit and it took a trick play and some good execution to get the ball rolling for them. With a fourth and 15 from their own 29. Mike Damron passed the ball out of punt formation to Jamie Bowling for lb yards and a first down. From here it took just five plays before Bremen scored as quarterback Jon Feldman hit Bo Hundt with a 49 yard pass and run play to put the Lions on the Board. Russell Schutz kicked the extra point and with 6:18 left in the half. Glenn s lead was cut to 20-7, but the Falcons appeared to still be in control. Nothing of consequence hap

pened in the remainder of the quarter and the first half ended 20-7. The third quarter was the calm before the storm. Neither team could generate a drive and they kicked the ball back and forth until they found themselves in the final period. Bremen appeared to have the first break in the stalemate, but a fumble going into the end zone was recovered by Glenn for a touchback stopping a potential Lion drive. Glenn punted the ball back to Bremen, not a particularly long punt and the Lions had good field position with a return of the kick. They moved 42 yards in five plays as Feldman capped the drive with a sneak from about a yard and a half out. Damron, a bruising runner, had a 27 yard scamper in this drive. Another Glenn break occured when a high snap on the extra point forced an attempted pass and Aaron West picked it off to stop the chance for two points. The clock still showed 9:32 to play with the Falcons holding on to a 20-13 lead. The Falcons picked up one first down on the next possession following the kickoff but then were forced to punt. A good punt backed the Lions to their own 22 yard line, but low and behold on the first play Damron broke a big one for 60 yards to the Glenn 18. giving Bremen a first and 10 at this point. After a penalty, it was first and 16 from the 24. and Feldman hit Chad Baker with a 24 yard scoring aerial to pull the Lions within one. Being the type of lean’ they are. they went for two and Damron punched the ball up the middle for the go ahead two point conversion, 21-20 with the clock now having 6:33 left to play in this exciting game. Glenn had the ball three more times in (he final 6:33 but on the first possession, turned it over on downs trying a fake punt on fourth

down, on the second possession a short pass and lateral was set up but the lateral was fumbled and Bremen recovered. From in tight thev scored and kicked the point to pretty much wrap it with with time now down to just 93 ticks on (he clock. Glenn was unable to sustain anything on the last possession and the game ended with the proud Lions fighting back over a heartbroken teain of Falcons in another very good high school fixitball game. Bremen dominated the stats, gaining 333 yards to Glenn’s 142. not counting the opening kickoff return. Damron had 148 yards in just nine carries while the Falcons were able to gain only 33 on the ground all night. Play Sectional At Home Friday The Falcons will again be playing their first round sectional game a( home Friday hosting the Mishawaka Marian team. Marian has won three state titles in different classes in the past, but this year are in a serious rebuilding and haven’t won a ball game, and they hadn’t even scored a touchdown in the first six. Tradition and a bunch of sophomores will be their strong point as they meet the Falcons who also have something to prove Friday night.
