Boy Scout Troop 241 of North Liberty was honored by the presence of Congressman John Hiler. when he attended their patrol meeting on September 23. at the United Methodist Church of North Liberty. The scouts. Greg Montgomery. Rusty Slater. Corey Ross. SoMt Rimbaugh and Jason Knepp welcomed Mr. Hiler with a standing salute. Congressman Hiler talked to the scouts on the importance of being a good citizen and how proud he was to see then* starling a new scout troop in North Liberty. He told them what an average day of work for him was like. The boys were presented a United States flag, which was flown over the United States Capitol Building, for Troop 241. on June 13.1989. The troop will be using the flag for the first time when they attend the Boy Scout Fall Camporee at St. Patrick's Park. South Bend, on October 20-22. Because of Mr. Hilcr's thoughtfulness, this flag will always have an added special meaning to Troop 241. Ron Slater, assistant scoutmaster. Chris Arick. Jason Knepp. Congressman Hiler. Rusty Slater. Walkerton firemen Rich Rodriguez and Dennis Roberts came to St. Patrick's Elementary School to talk about Fire Prevention. Mr. Rodriguez showed the children a smoke alarm and demonstrated how it is properly used. He stressed to the children that they should have their parents regularly check their smoke detector to make sure the batteries are in good working order. He also went over the stop, drop and roll procedure with the children. Matches and lighters were targeted as the major causes of fires in the country. Mr. Rodriguez slated “Fire prevention should be practiced every day. Thirty percent of casualties happen because of kids, due to playing with matches or

lighters ..." He emphasized that one butane lighter is like playing with three sticks of dynamite. Parents must reinforce the lessons that the firemen teach at home to insure their families' safety. Fireman Dennis Roberts showed the fire truck to the children explaining the many uses of all of the equipment. He also dressed up in the Fire Suit, complete with the oxygen tank demonstrating to the children how serious it is and how dangerous it is for the fireman himself. As a final note they were very excited about a contest the Fire Department is running. Their Fire Prevention Poster Contest starts on October 10 and runs through the end of October. They will be offering for each grade level a first place trophy, and second and third place plaques. There will be a grand prize winner who will receive an autographed basketball of Craig Hodges of the Chicago Bulls. A big thank you goes to all of the firemen who dedicate their time and lives to help protect and save lives and homes. UREY VOLLEYBALL TOURNEY OCTOBER 14 Urey Middle School will be holding a volleyball tournament, on Saturday. October 14. with the doors to open at 8:15 a.m. The first match will begin at 9:00 a.m. between LaVille and South Central 7th grade teams. At 10:15 a.m. Urey and Knox 7th grade teams will meet. At 11:30 a.m. the Knox and South Central Bth grade teams will meet followed at 12:45 p.m. with the Urey and LaVille Bth grade learns. At 2:30 p.m. the 7th grade championship will be played and then a< 3:45 p.m. the Bth grade championship will be plaved. Starting times may vary due to length of matches. Admission is $2.00 for adults and SI.OO for students. Concessions will be available in the kitchen. PANCAKE AND SAUSAGE BREAKFAST SUNDAY There will be a pancake and sausage breakfast, open to all. at Si. Patrick's School basement from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, on Sunday. October 15. Prices are $2.50 for adults; $1.50 for children under 12 and pre-schoolers are free. Price includes orange juice, milk, coffee and all you can eat. The breakfast is sponsored by the Walkerton Knights of Columbus Council 5709.
