CONSUMER ALERT Newspaper and magazine advertisements that offer to “erase bad credit" or “improve credit ratings" for a “small fee" might appear to offer solutions to consumers with credit problems but usually offer services that can he 'obtained for much less elsewhere. “These advertisements are placed by persons or companies offering to turn around a consumer's credit history," says Attorney General Linley Pearson, “many times the ads promise to accomplish things that just cannot be done, and prey on consumers who arc on the verge of financial difficulty. If a similar ad entices you. make certain you know what credit repair companies can do before you pay for something that cannot be accomplished.” Pearson says consumers who have been turned down for jobs, credit cards, loans or mortagages often take as antage of credit repair services, believing claims that bad credit can be erased or removed from any files a credit reporting agency might have in your name. “Some credit repair companies offer to alter your credit history, often for a hefty fee." obtain your credit file‘for you, something you can do for free if you have been denied credit.” Pearson says the 1970 Fair Credit Reporting Act allows consumers to obtain at no cost the contents of their credit file if (hey have been denied credit on a credit report. Consumers can obtain the contents of their file without a charge if the request if made w ithin 50 days of being denied credit. having credit difficulties can contact the Consumer Credit Counseling Service. The service offers a debt repayment program for consumers who cannot meet their monthly credit payments. The Consumer Credit Counseling Service works with unsecured debt -- debts other than mortgages or car payments - which generally consist of credit card debt. “If you are in this situation, and want to maintain or improve your credit report, contact your local Consumer Credit Counseling Service to determine if you qualify for assistance.” Pearson says. Consumer Credit Counseling Sevice has offices in the following -locations: Elkhart-101 E. Hively Avenue, (219) 295-65%: EvansWayne, 345 West Wayne Street, (219) 422-3806: Gary-3660 Grant Street, Sutie 5, (219) 980-4800; Indianapolis- 615 N. Alabama Street. Room 219, (317) 632-4501. Consumers can call the services and request an application. After the service receives the application, the consumer will be called for an appointment. Consumers whose problems consist of credit card debts must stop using their credit cards and turn them in once they have been accepted for the service. Pearson says the service works with creditors by asking the creditors to accept lower monthly payments for an extended period of time. Not all creditors work with the service, however. There is a small fee required for the service, which is funded mainly by creditors. “The Consumer Credit Counseling Service might be an answer for consumers in financial trouble or on the verge of trouble,” Pearson says. "Consumers should consider contacting that service before calling companies or individuals advertising to earase bad credit or repair credit histories.” The wallflower is a fragrant plant that originated in southern Europe.
