NEIGHBORHOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAM TO PROVIDE $10,400 TO INDUSTRIAL FUND Lt. Gov. Frank O’Bannon, director of the Indiana Department of Commerce, and IDOC officials announce the awarding of $10,400 in state tax credits through the 1990 Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) to the Walkerton Industrial Fund to rehabilitate downtown buildings, promote construction on vacant lots, attract new retail businesses, promote new housing construction and provide for streetscape improvements. The NeighborhixKi Assistance Program was designed to assist Indiana communities of all sizes with their efforts to revitalize and improve economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. This year $887,532 in state tax credits was awarded. Taxpayers who contribute to approved projects arc eligible for state tax credits equaling SO percent of their contribution. O Bannon comments. "Tax credit assistance is one of the most effective ways to stimulate private contributions at the local level, and. at the same time, it enables organizations to raise capital for community-based programs." Organizations throughout the state taht received assistance will use the funds for a broad range of improvements such as: child care.
historic renovations, a shelter for abused women, an emergency shelter for the homeless, lowincome housing, and commercial and community revitalizations. O’Bannon concludes. "The community partnerships we have worked hard to develop arc strengthened by this program designed to promote local economic growth. The initiative and commitment of these groups demonstrate practical means to upgrade economically disadvantaged neighborhoods through local efforts.” Senators Douglas A. Hunt. Betty N. YOU AND YOUR PET Or Dear Dr. Wise: Mitzi, our two year old German shepherd, suddenly developed a swelling under her jaw. The skin on the right side of the jaw sags and seems to have fluid in it. There also is swelling on the right side of her tongue. Does she have an infection? What should we do?

Answer: It sounds like Mit-zi has ruptured a hole in her salivary gland. This is an uncomfortable problem for her. but it can be treated successfully. The fluid under her tongue and under her jaw probably is saliva. The salivary gland continues to produce saliva and, instead of going into the mouth as it should, the hole allows it to leak into the surrounding tissues. Your veterinarian will be able to tell if this is the problem by using a needle and syringe to draw out some of the fluid. It will appear thick and stringy like saliva. If another problem is causing the swelling, the veterinarian will know by examining the fluid. He might, for example, find an infection or cyst. Your veterinarian may want to start treatment by giving Mitzi lasix, a diuretic which draw the fluid out of the jaw and tongut This is not a cure because the salivary glands usually will cont inuc to produce fluid and the hole will still be open so the "pockets" in the jaw and tongue will refill. Surgery usually is required The mandibular and sublingual salivary glands, located at the back of the jaw below the ear. probably will be removed from the side of the mouth where swelling occured Saliva has little effect on digestion but does aid in chewing because of the lubrication it provides. The glands on the other side of the mouth can produce adequate saliva so Mitzi will be good as new. Sometimes we can trace a rup ture in the salivary gland to a puncture by a foreign body or occasionally to an infection, but most of the time we never find out the cause. The good news is that the problem cannot occur again since we removed the gland cau sing the trouble If vou have a question about vour pet. write to Dr. Wise.
