July festivities week on Sunday, July 2.
Individual and group entries congregated at the Presbyterian Church parking lot. Led by the Walkerton Volunteer Fire Department, the parade began at 6:00 p.m. traveling down Georgia Street to Van Buren then to Kentucky through the Urey parking lot then ending at the grandstand area at Place Park. Four categories were judged this year: Me And My Pet, Float, My Favorite Character and Open Class. Judges for this event viewed each entry from in front of the Walkerton Post Office. The hard task of being a judge rested on Randy Hoover, Jim Menges, Gene Brems and Don Thomas. Winners for this year’s parade are as follows: Me And My Pet — Donald Mangun, first; Adam Moore, second. Floats — Lindsey Barbknecht, first; Walkerton Jr. League, second; Scott Marchbank, third. My Favorite Character — Jaime Marchbank, first; Brian Snell, Rachel and Zachery Kelley, second; J. R. Marchbank, third. Open Gass — Crystal and Brooke Allen, first; Krystalyn and Heather Kranenberg, second; Brian Drake (tie) and David Miller, third. Grand Prize — Beth and Steven Towle. Special thanks to the Friends of the Fourth committee for supplying the prize monies and to the Walkerton Dairy Queen for their contribution of gift certificates. Jason Groves. 274’10”; 2nd place. Tony Lidgard. 283’2”; and Ist place, Jeff Kaiser, 309’9”. First place winners received four Chicago Cub tickets; second place received a ball glove; third place, an aluminum bat; 4th place, a wooden bat; and Sth place, a baseball. INDIANA STATE FAIR YOUTH TALENT CONTEST EXPANDS PROGRAM Talented young Hoosier performers compete in a variety of categories including tap-dancing, singing and novelty acts at the Indiana State Fair’s Eckrich Youth Talent Contest, which has been expanded an additional day. Fairgoers can watch these future stars at no charge August 21 - 24 in the Kroger Lincoln Theatre, then return to cheer finalists August 26. The talent show consists of female and male vocal solo, vocal group, instrumental solo, dance solo and group, and novelty solo and group. Entry forms will be issued to eligible representatives by county fair officials. The deadline for entires is Thursday, August 10. The show is split into Junior and

Senior divisions. The junior division is for ages 10 and under, and the senior division is for ages 13 through 21. Contestants may enter only one competition. The Youth Talent Show accepts entries from Indiana residents who represent their home counties. The show is open only to nonprofessionals who compete in and win a sanctioned county fair talent contest. If an Indiana county does not host a talent contest, that county may send an act or acts by contacting, by letter, the Director of Special Events, Sarah Jane Crimmins, at the Indiana State Fair Youth Talent Contest. An entry fee of SIO.OO for each act is required. Checks or money orders must be made payable to the Indiana State Fair and submitted with the entry form. The Special Events Department will advise contestants of their performance date, time and place of appearance. Plaques are awarded to first, second and third places in both divisions and at the finals. MARSHALL COUNTY DIABETIC CHAPTER TO MEET JULY 24 The Marshall County Chapter of the American Diabetes Association will hold its monthly meeting on Monday. July 24, at 7:00 p.m. at the Plymouth Public Library on Center Street. The guest speaker for the evening is Dr. Laurence Rogers. Dr. Rogers is a Podiatrist from Plymouth. His program will feature information on diabetes and foot care and focus on the preventative aspect of healthy feet. Dr. Rogers is on the staff at Michiana Community Hospital in Mishawaka and also at Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac. Everyone is welcome to attend.
