NOT AN EASY TASK As we check the calendar, we see that the Fourth of July is very rapidly approaching. The Fourth this year falls on Tuesday which is now less than two weeks away. Every year it is taken for granted by the public that big celebrations will be held, following usually in a similiar fashion in the many towns who hold such celebrations, as has been the case in the past. This year is no different. People expect to have that celebration, almost completely ignoring the fact that a lot of work and planning must go into such these days. Both Walkerton and North Liberty will have their celebrations. They both conclude with giant fireworks displays, but prior to that they each go their own way of celebrating our nation’s birthday. Regardless of the program planned, each takes a lot of planning and hard work by some dedicated individuals. In Walkerton, a group called “Friends of the Fourth’’ have come forward in recent years to take over the planning and details of the celebration that at one time was a joint venture of the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and American Legion. This group puts in a lot of time, not just planning, but in raising the money for the several day celebration. This year the carnival, which is an expected highlight of the Walkerton program, will come to town and be set up on Wednesday, June 28, running through Tuesday, July 4. The Flea Market will start on a daily basis on Thursday, June 29. During this week of the celebration, many other attractions will center around the park, culminating with the grand fireworks display on Tuesday night to conclude this year’s program. A schedule of the events as planned at this time, will be published in next week’s “Independent-News’’. In North Liberty, the 4th celebration is sponsored and financed through the efforts of the North Liberty Volunteer Fire Department. They coordinate the activities, which occur on one day. A big parade in the afternoon gets it rolling, also ending with a giant fireworks display at night. Both of these celebrations takes a lot of money to make happen. The various fund raisings and donations by merchants and industries, makes it all possible. Each and everyone can help in their own little way by supporting the fund raising events, whether it be by buying raffle tickets, outright donations, or supporting other activities that funnel the proceeds to the celebrations. It is not too late to help in this cause. We are fortunate to have two groups willing to take the time and do the work in planning and getting the whole thing in motion. The work they are doing is something that very few would do and we all owe a lot of appreciation and support to the groups that make it happen. It doesn’t just happen by itself. It still takes a lot of time and hard work by some very dedicated people.
