FINALLY! It has been said ‘‘you must learn to walk before you can run”. Finally, the John Glenn Falcons have overcome the obstacles that have denied them a basketball sectional championship despite often being thought of as the ‘‘team to beat”. With such disappointing losses as the one in 1973 when an offensive foul on Bruce Dayhuff late in the bailgame took a victory away from Glenn and gave it to Plymouth, to more recent years when one thing or another popped up, the Falcons were year in and year out just not able to nail down a sectional championship. A few years ago they finally got past step one of “learning how to walk” when they finally defeated the Plymouth Pilgrims in a very emotional game on Friday night of the sectional, only to come back the next night and lose to a La Ville team they had defeated easily twice before in the season. However, Saturday night, they “learned how to run”. A thrilling 50-47 victory over a very good and scrappy Bremen team gave John Glenn their first ever sectional crown in basketball and is sending them on to Elkhart’s Northside gym on Saturday to compete at the regional level. Win or lose Saturday, the Falcons have now taken another big step. That very elusive sectional title is now theirs and in no way will this be taken from them. Some people think too much emphasis is put on such things. However, this is Indiana ... a state where basketball often is not just another thing ... it is the only thing! Despite the fact that isn’t really the case, basketball does mean very much to all those who over the years have participated in the Indiana State Tourney at the sectional level right on through those lucky few who have been on teams that won the championship. We congratulation coach Gordon Mosson and his Falcon basketball team who this year has had adversity off the floor as well as some very good battles on the court. Maybe this will be just like “getting that first olive out of the bottle” . . . they come much easier after that initial one! Good luck Saturday. TOWN MEETING SATURDAY Saturday there will be other things going on besides the regional basketball tourney. In Walkerton at 9:00 a.m., Rep. Richard Mangus, Rep. Ed Cook and Sen. Betty Lawson, will visit for the annual legislative town meeting. Despite the fact the timing is poor due to the success of the John Glenn basketball team and their upcoming trip to Elkhart Saturday morning, there will still be many people in town who will be able to attend this town meeting at the Town Hall. The time is 9:00 a.m. and a special invitation is extended to anyone, not just those who live in Walkerton. With Rep. Cook also in attendance, many of his constituents are in the nearby area who are welcome as well. And a special invitation is offered to the people of North Liberty and Liberty Township as this year there will not be such a town meeting in North Liberty. You are very welcome and encouraged to attend. The legislators will give a brief talk on the current long session of the legislature and following this there will be a question and answer period for all to participate in if they have any questions or comments at all. It is too bad the conflict occurs, but the date had been set and nothing could be done about this after the Saturday night sectional victory by John Glenn. We do encourage anyone who is around, to attend and show an interest in your local representatives in the Indiana General Assembly. They do this for you and do want to know your feelings and listen to your input.
VOICE OF THE PEOPLE “Overcome Adversity” Last Saturday night after the jubilation was experienced at our first ever sectional victory pep rally. I have taken time to reflect about the years our school/community has gone without. Then I think — why now? I share this thought with those who have gone on and those who have patiently waited for this special time "Be sober, be watchful Your adversary . . prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." The weapons of power, greed, pride, envy and jealousy arc used to destroy ihe spirit and flesh. However, the weapon of discouragement is used to break ihe strongest spirit — when effective — the battle is won by the adversary Discouragement is always possible and results from the stresses and strains of every day living, When diuouragcmcrit ivmci we
need to pray, support one another, and trust God to help us in our struggles. There is always hope and hope can triumph over discouragement. Today's hope is the seed of tomorrow’s victory These devotional excerpts are what I believe to have been the answer to the "why*” that our team and their coaches were successful. Everyone working together has overcome the adversity of discouragement. As our superintendent, Dr. Smith, said, the boss displayed courage that resulted tn the victory thev now share and will cherish in the years to come. Good luck to players, coaches, parents and fans. Dick Kickbush GLENN WINS SECTIONAL (continued (rom Page 1) 1 22 mark, a pair of free throws by Winger opened the lead to three, but a foul was whistled on Glenn on the lane to give I**master a
chance to negate Winger’s two points. However. Lawmaster was off on his first attempt and just 22 seconds later, with an even minute left. Weston hit a basket that pulled the Lions within one, 48-47, On this play Weston was fouled. Winger's fourth, but he also was off mark on the attempt to tie the game and Bremen was now in a steal or foul situation and Runyan was fouled with :35 seconds left and converted both ends of his attempts. Bremen took a time out with :19 showing but with the Glenn defense playing extremely tight in three-point range, a desperation shot by Mann was no good, a rebound found a quick outside pass and another heave at the buzzer proved to be just that, a heave and the time ran out giving the Falcons the sectional crown. I he game was very even through the first eight minutes. Winger hit first after a steal on a lay-in and Bremen responded with one of two from the free throw line by Mann. Clifton hit for Glenn and again the Lions could only manage one of two from the line, this time by Casey Miller. However, at the 5:52 mark. Lawmaster canned a three-pointer for a 5-4 Bremen lead. Runyan countered with a lay-in but Miller matched this for Bremen. Runyan hit again on a short lane shot and the Falcons moved ahead by three with a Gifton basket. A pair of free throws by Feldman was followed by a Winger basket and a three-pointer by Weston with 1:31 left proved to be the final score of the quarter, tying the score at 12 all. The second quarter started all Glenn. Rick O’Connor opened with a three-pointer and Winger followed with two baskets. Gifton made it 21-12 with a rebound shot as Bremen was really having trouble with the Glenn defense and their own efforts in this quarter. They broke the Falcon run with a Miller basket, cutting the lead to seven with just over half a period to go. and from here on out the two teams battled almost even and Glenn held a 25-19 halftime lead. The third period was all even as far as points go but Bremen got back to within two early as the Falcons started a little cold. The Lions hit three of the quarter's first four baskets in just over two minutes before the Falcons ran off a 10 point streak on two Runyan baskets and two three pointers, one by O'Connor and then one by Groves. Leading 37-25 with 2:35 left, the Falcons did not score again in this period and Bremen closed with six points to make it 37-31 going into the final stanza. The Falcons had three players in double figures, the three who spent the most time inside. Runyan had 15. Winger 14 and Gifton 10. Bremen was led by Weston with a game high 16 and Feldman reached double figures with 12. Memorial On Saturday On Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m., it will be the Elkhart Memorial Crimson Chargers who will take a 14-11 record into the game. The Chargers were impressive in the sectional after a slightly better than even season in their own competition. The second game will have two teams who arc no strangers to tournament play at the regional level. West view and Warsaw. The two winners of the early games will meet at 8:15 Saturday night for the regional crown.
