SENIOR BOWLING NEWS The weather was dreary, the scores were low. but the enthusiasm was high as the Seniors made those pins fly again this week. It may have taken most of the bow iers the two balls allowed to per rack to get those pins to fall, yet the laughter and good natured "joshing" indicated they were enjoying themselves. The ladies, with 18 bowlers, watched Clare Martin have another good day. While not completely "cutting up” the score sheet, here P 9 was highest for the high scratch game. Jo Wozniak's 139 •as a distant second High handicap game was also Martin's with a 231 total. June Lind followed with 20 and Stephanie Kilarski placed third, posting a 204 in the handicap contest. Martin's 411 high senes total was followed by Betty Schrader s 385 and Jo Wozniak's 376 senes. With several handicaps changing a point or two this week, the competition will certainly become keener' The gents, with 15 bowlers, had a fair scoring day. Bud Weinman, however, was in fine form, rolling a 189 for high scratch game Eli Sobat s 17 7 followed, just beating Harold Schweder's 17$ Wetman s 228 high handicap game bested Sobat's 223 Jim Thibodeaui s 214 came in third Weinman s SIS high senes was the onlv
series tallied above the 500 mark. Schweder followed with a 476 total, just beating Sobat's 473. The competition was close even though the scores were fair. Each week a senior bowler or two is added to our roster. This keeps our numbers up as the attrition of illness or other duties does not allow some to be present. If you are a senior and wish to bowl, come join this lively group. They bowl each Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Walkerton Shady Lanes. All are welcome! TOP LIONS 51-40 A lay-in with three seconds remaining by Steve Runyan broke a 49-49 tie and gave the John Glenn Falcons a key 51-49 victory- in their basketball game with Bremen Saturday night. This game basically was for the Northern State Conference championship as these two team were undefeated in conference play and Glenn has only to beat LaVille next week to take home the Undisputed title. The worst that could happen now would be a tie for the crown, but the LaVille team has only one win this season and will be playing on the Falcons home court. The lay-in. off a nice pass from Todd Clifton, might have ended the scoring, but didn’t end the game without more thrills to come in the final :03. Runyan was fouled on the play and missed the free throw and Feldman grabbed the rebound and fed a half court pass to Matt Weston who was fouled with :01 showing on the clock. He missed the front of a one and one and a desperation Bremen tip also was no good to finally end the tough ball game. Weston had hit six of seven before missing the chance to tie. The victory gave Glenn a 12-3 record overall and 6-0 in conference play. For Bremen, the recent BiCounty champions, it was the fourth loss of the year, the second in two nights as they fell to Warsaw on Friday in a game that gave Warsaw control of the Northern Lakes Conference. The game was tight all the way with the exception of one big run by Bremen in the early second half. The Lions were trying to control the tempo of the game and not get into a running game with the Falcons. This was fairly successful most of the night. The two teams were knotted at 15 after one quarter and the Falcons had gained a slight
26-23 advantage by halftime. The Lions then came back with the first 11 points of the second half to take the largest lead of the night, but were seriously hurt when Casey Miller picked up his fourth foul at the 5:23 mark of the third period. Miller had already sat out a good part of the second quarter and this senior scrapper is an important cog in the Lions plans. The Lions then were outscored by their hosts 12-4 the rest of the quarter as the Falcons took charge of the game at this point. The fourth quarter never found the two teams more than two points apart until late in the period when Glenn moved to a 49-46 lead with less than a minute to play, looking to have the inside track on the win. However, two misses from the free throw line gave Bremen the opportunity to tie and with 11 seconds left. Chris Devine hit a three pointer to knot it at 49 all. setting up the game winning sequence of thrills that came in the final three ticks of the clock. Both teams used the free throw line to great advantage as a lot of fouls were called for the pace of the game. However, the intensity was there as the two teams knew the importance of this game. Runyan and Charlie Winger had 12 and 11 for Glenn a leading scorers while Perry Mann and Feldman had II and 10 respectively for Bremen. Visit Marian Friday The Falcons will meet a struggling Marian Knights basketball team Friday night on the Knights home court. They have really had problems this season, losing their last game to New Prairie who has only won twice. B-Team tipoff is set for 6:15.
