The Tom Walter family has double reason to smile this week. Brothers Daniel and Michael each won the National Geographic SoMike Walter, seventh grade student at Urey Middle School, won the school's Geography Bee, on Monday. Students in the fourth through eighth grades throughout the L’nited States and four territories arc currently involved in the first round of competition in which they answer oral questions on geographv. Runner-up was Jimmy Vail, eighth grader. The Georgraphy Bee is sponsored bv National Geographic World, the society s magazine for children The contest was developed in response to "a growing concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States''. According to a nine country gallup survey conducted for National Geographic Society last May. American young adults aged 18 to 24 knew less about geography than any other country's young people. Walter will now advance to the next level of competition, a written examination. One hundred of the top scorers in Indiana will be eligible to complete on April 7. All first place state winners will be flown to Washington. D.C. with their teacher escort to participate in the national finals on May 18 and 19. The first place national bee will receive a $25,000 scholarship; second place winner a $15,000 scholarship; and the third place winner a SIO,OOO scholarship. The Society's contest features questions on the broad subject of geography — the study of earth and its inhabitants. The following is a random sampling of actual questions from the Urey contest.
