VOICE OF THE PEOPLE (continued from Page 4) witches or scarecrows. If you want to stay open on Sunday or close that is your choice. You probably grumble that we’ll be taking up your parking or sidewalks with booths. Just smile and enjoy. Probably the next week someone will come into your establishment and say “1 just had to come back and buy something from your friendly store.” A small town needs cooperation of everyone. We need to work together, forgetting personal grudges and animosities. Enthusiasm! That is the key. Buy a “Great Pumpkin Festival” T-shirt and wear it! Sell yourself to yourself first and you will sell your wares to your customers! I want Walkerton to be here always. 1 like the friendliness and the convenience. I like help given happily and I’m sure that your other customers would too. “Smile. It makes everyone wonder what you’ve been up to.” Sincerely yours, Nedra Williams “Buy Walkerton” 1 keep saying “Buy Walkerton”. To buy one needs money. Usually a person needs a job to make money. Walkerton has many industries to provide jobs for many local and out of area workers. in our Industrial Park, there are Plas-Steel Products, I would venture to say that probably every family has had a member work here or in their Polygon Co.. Inc. Also in this area is Walkerton Tool & Die Mfg. Co., American Koller, American Riverton, Boramco and Modern Door, where I think most of my neighbors as well as my husband works. Off of this area we find American Door. With all of our door companies, there shouldn’t be any houses without doors in our area. Just south on 23 we have Metal Building Maintenance and Thermal Seal. On 23 nopth near our new Industrial park we find Precision Machinery Exchange. Radiator Engineering and Pioneer Southern Co. Heading east we come to Charles O. Hiler & Sons, the P & H Machine Co., Mer-Con Tool. Gene’s Plastics, Inc., Ross Engineering & Machine, and R.1.5.C.0. In our rural area we have Hardy Lake Peat Co., Precision Pallets and Skids, Northern Wood Products Co., Patterson Trucking, Matz Mobile Welding and Fabrication, Hydra-Fab. All these industries coupled with the many farmers who hire help during the year make a strong earning base. Put these together with the employees of our local businesses and town employees, we do have a money making area. Which leads me to say again, “Buy Walkerton”. Next week I will finish my biking trip in the middle of town. Ryan Bowlds created the design for our Great Pumpkin Festival.

ACADEMIC WALL OF FAME ■t SO L, «««« , I 'ML K & ' MM*? W W' We- r < y •
After admiring the “Athletic Wall Os Fame”, which has been a traditional part of life at John Glenn High School for the past several years, principal Mike Shuler has decided to take the concept a step further and establish a similar tribute to celebrate the academic success of Glenn students. Four years ago, when Shuler assumed the principalship, he established a five-year plan to upgrade the general level of academic quality and began by encouraging student participation in such state-sponsor-ed activities as the Spell Bowl and Academic Decathlon competitions. Glenn students met with virtually instant success in both areas, going on to place second in their division in the State Spell Bowl and by winning a large number of first place medals in the Decathlon. Last year, Spell Bowl team members were awarded first place in their division on the State Level, while the Decathlon team achieved the highest number of points of all schools in their enrollment classifications. In addition to the special awards received for these accomplishments, Shuler has had a special commemorative plaque designed to honor all Glenn students since 1968
You can buy a T-shirt with the design on it. Have you sent in your choice for King and Queen of the Pumpkin Patch? Do you have a name for our pumpkin? The coloring contest is already underway. We have rides coming in for the youngsters during the Festival. And we have many, many nice booths with foods and handiwork. What are you baking for the pumpking foods contest? I’m getting hungry after my long bike trip and I’m looking forward to all the goodies. Well it’s time to shut up and get this letter into our local newspaper,

who graduated with a perfect four point grade average. All of these awards can presently be seen on “The Academic Wail Os Fame”, which is located in the front window of the high school, and, since the academic competition teams for this school year are in the process of being formed, other honrs, will, undoubtedly, be added in the near future. Shuler describes his idea as “an attempt to applaud the great academic achievements our students have attained”. He goes on to add, “Since most of our time in high school is spent in class, our students certainly need to receive the same degree of recognition for thier successes as others receive so deservedly for extra-curricular participation.” When asked about the effect of the establishment of the “Wall” on Glenn students, Shuler smiles as he recounts, “It's been very rewarding to see the way they've been reacting to the successes of our academic teams. More than ever before are showing interest in participating themselves.” He sums it al! up as he concludes, “We stand for a high level of quality education here. Our 'Academic Wall Os Fame’ is only the symbol of the end result of what can happen.”
