BLOCKED KICK HANDS FALCONS 28-27 LOSS Brent Burner not only kicked four extra points, he also burst through the middle of the line and blocked the potential tying extra point with 49 seconds left Friday night to allow the Jimtown Jimmies to hang on for an exciting 28-27 victory over the John Glenn Falcons in a Northern State Conference game. The Falcons had just pulled some heroics of their own to get back in contention to tie or win the game and on a crucial fourth down and 10 from the Jimtown 22, John Pinckert lofted one towards Steve Runyan, who was completely covered by two defensive men, but the big guy pulled in the pass to make it 28-27. The Falcons of Dennis Rippy then chose to go for the tie with the extra point and the big play by the 5’6” Bruner sealed the contest for the Jimmies. With the loss Glenn slipped to 1-3 on the season and 0-3 in conference play. Jimtown is 3-1, but perfect at 2-0 in conference competition. Jimmies around pretty good themselves. Jimtown took the opening kick and returned it to the 48 yard line where they unleashed a nine play di^ve that moved 52 yards for the score with quarterback Jeff Adams sneaking it in from one yard out. Burner kicked the first of his four extra points and it was 7-0 with just 3:39 played in the game. The Jimmies blew a chance to make it worse real quick as an interception by Adams of a John Pinckert pass gave they a first down and 10 at the Falcon 21. They gained one first down and were fairly conservative and elected to go for a field goal on fourth and two from the three, but this, the same length as an extra point, was wide right. It didn't take long until the Jimtown crew forced another Falcon mistake as they held Glenn and then rushed through to block an attempted punt which they covered at the 9 yard line. This time it was just a couple of runs into the line by Brian Trosper and Bruce Helbling with Helbling covering the final six yards for their second TD. It was 14-0 after Burner’s conversion with just :08 showing in the first quarter. The Falcons then looked like it might be their turn as on the first play after the kickoff, Pinckert ran an option play and kept the ball and raced for 53 yards down to the Jimtown 15. A fumble on the next play was covered by Todd King for a four yard gain, and a pass from Pinckert to Runyan picked up five. Rick Hummer hit the line for one and the first down at the 5, and on the first play a straight ahead sneak by Pinckert took the ball to the one. However, the second down play failed to gain a thing and on third down Pinckert ran wide with an option, an pitched to a trailing Mike Radandt, but the pitchout wasn't handled and Jimtown's Jon Barret recovered at the five
yard line and this threat had ended. The Jimmies then marched 95 yards in 11 plays with the big play of the drive a 34 yard pass from Adams to Burner. They picked up six first downs in this drive as they ground it out hard and fast and Jim Rhoads finally plunged over from the one for their third touchdown, this one coming with 4:09 left in’the first half. Burner again kicked the extra point and it was 21-0. The Falcons didn’t fold however, and in the next 3:17 moved 65 yards in eight plays to score before the half ended. In this drive Pinckert hit Marty Hesch and Aaron West for 11 yards each, Radandt ripped off a 20 yarder and Hummer ran one for 14 to eat up most of the ground. Pinckert ran it in himself from one yard out with just 52 ticks left on the clock, but after a penalty on the first good conversion, the second kick from five yards further back was wide and it was 21-6, Jimtown. the way it stayed until halftime. The second half belonged almost entirely to Glenn. They took the opening kickoff and moved 51 yards in eight plays with a 22 yard run by Gary Strong and a 22 yard pass from Pinckert to Runyan the big plays in the drive. Strong bolted over from two yards out and on the extra point, Pinckert hit West for two points and it was 21-14 with 8:02 showing in the third period. After holding the Jimmies, a 46 yard punt was muffed and then picked up at the 1 yard line, putting the Falcons deep in a hole. They managed one first down to get a little ways away from the goal line, but a fumble by Hummer when he really got hit and slightly injured, gave the Jimmies the ball as Jim Newcomer recovered for Jimtown

at the 27 yard line. It took five plays, all on the ground, for Jimtown to score, and this short drive upped the lead to 14 again with 1:02 left in period number 3. This was the point where Glenn started the comeback to pull back into the game with the Jimmies. They didn’t score on their first possession, but after turning the ball on downs, they then recovered a Jimtown fumble as they were hitting much harder in the second half. West covered the free ball at the 45 and on the first play from scrimmage, Pinckert hit Runyan for the entire 45 and the score. Greg Vandal! kicked the extra point and it was seven points different once again with still eight minutes and 37 seconds to play. Jimtown did manage on their next series of downs to pick up one first down, but the Falcons held and then Hummer intercepted a pass on third down to get the ball back. This was followed by a Jimtown interception of a Pinckert pass, but just three plays later West picked off another Adams aerial and the Falcons had the ball back at the Jimtown 39 with 2:16 left in the game. A 17 yard gainer Pinckert to Runyan was followed by a no gainer, two interceptions, a five yard penalty on each team and then on the key fourth and 22, Runyan made his great catch to set up the try for the tying point which was blocked. Glenn was out of timeouts which forced action to continue without being able to stop the clock and the Jimmies were able to run out the time after an onside kick came up short ot the necessary 10 yards and Jimtown took possession. It was another tough game for the Falcons to lose, but certainly their best showing of the year, especially after spotting the Jimmies a 21-0 first half lead. Pinckert had a great night throwing in

spite of the two interceptions and Runyan's receptions left nothing to be desired as he pulled in five for 111 yards and two scores despite the double teaming he was receiving from the Jimmies. Pinckert, on the strength of his big 53 yard run early in the game, was Glenn’s leading rusher as well. Visit South Central Friday On Friday night the Falcons will travel to South Central for a 7:30 ball game against the Satellites, a team that started well this season but is in a rebuilding year and they have also lost a couple of games.
