SARAH L. DEGROFF Sarah L. DeGroff, 2, of 400 E. Center Street, North Liberty, was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. Joseph's Medical Center, South Bend, at 6:22 p.m., on Friday, September 16, following an accident in front of her home when an auto struck her. She was bom on January 5, 1986, in South Bend and had lived in the area all of her life. > According to the investigating i police, Sarah DeGroff was struck f by a car near her home, while gathering pebbles in the road at the
time of the accident. Investigators believe that little Sarah was standing on the south side of Center Street throwing pebbles into the road when she ran into the street to gather up the pebbles and was struck by the eastbound car driven by Garry C. Cavender, of 17181 Indiana 4. The North Liberty police stated that Cavender was estimated to be traveling 27 to 31 miles per hour, below the posted speed limit on the street of 35 miles per hour. He was given a blood alcohol content test, which is required under state law for all serious traffic accidents, which revealed there was no alcohol in his blood stream. The accident was investigated by North Liberty police Capt. Delmus Burch. Surviving are her parents, Alan K. and Diane L. DeGroff, North Liberty; a sister, Jessica; and a brother, Aaron, both at home; maternal grandparents, Edward and Alma Roza, Detroit, Michigan; paternal grandparents, Donald, Sr. and Virginia DeGroff, Mishawaka; and paternal great-grandmother, Della Hower, Markel. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, Walkerton, with Rev. Richard Reynolds officiating. Burial was in Eastlawn Cemetery, North Liberty. The A. M. Manuel Funeral Home, North Liberty, were in charge of the arrangements. ESTALEE EMMA ETHERINGTON Estalee Emma Etherington, 73, of Lakeland, Florida, formerly of North Liberty and Koontz Lake, passed away at 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, in Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was born on May 5, 1915, in Deer Creek, Indiana, and lived in the Lakeland area for 15 years having moved there from Mishawaka. As Estalee Forgey she married Thomas P. Etherington, on June 24, 1934, in Logansport, who preceded her in death in 1966. Surviving are two sons, Stephen H., of Winter Haven, Florida, and Richard M., of Plainfield; six grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka. Burial was in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Mishawaka. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lakeland. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. The Palmer Funeral Home, South Bend, was in charge of the arrangements. PROJECT SAFE APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE IN STARKE COUNTY Project SAFE applications for households aged 60 and over and disabled households will begin September 20. 1988. For those households aged 59 and under, applications cannot be taken until October 18. 1988. Emergency SAFE will begin on November 1, 1988. Project SAFE is a State program to assist low income households with the high cost of home energy. Emergency SAFE may provide assistance to those households who are disconnected from their utility service due to non-payment, have a need for an emergency fill, or hlep those senior citizens who are past due on their heating bills. More details available at the Council on Aging office. The Starke County Council on Aging will take applications at their office located in the Court House, 2nd floor. NIPSCA and REMC will also take Project SAFE applications for those clients over the age of 60. The Council on Aging is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Applicants need proof of income (award letters, check stubs or letter from employer), for the last 12 months, the Social Security number for all members in the house over the age of 18, and a copy of thetr current heating and electric bill.

Benefit levels will be determined by the State office, based on factors such as age, annual household income, housing type, geographic area, and primary source of heat. “This system should give higher benefits to households considered “vulnerable” to the cost of heating fuel,” stated Joan Haugh, director of the Council on Aging. Another change in the 1988 program benefit will include a $60.00 electric allowance, compared to $50.00 previously. HAMLET DAYS GOLF OUTING The Hamlet Days Golf Outing was held on September 10, at the Hamlet Golf Course. Twentyteams of three men and one lady participate. Local merchants were generous with donations for prizes on every hole. The day netted $1,475.00 for the Hamlet Fire Department. 4-Man Team Scramble In the 4-man team scramble, a tie at 5 under on the front side included the teams of Steve Budka, Betty Nordstrom, Carl Huddleston and Ray Schwenk and Artie Garbison, Fran Odle, Dave Aquino and John McGrath. The Back had a three way tie, also at 5 under. The teams were Steve Moerman, P. Ostrander, Joe Rannells and Tom Bachinski; Marilyn Kurtz, Jim Daube, Chuck Eaton and Dave Kaminski; and Tom Brown, Liz Bachinski, Max Weaver and Al Bolles. The 18 hole total had a two wav tie with 9 under with the teams of Steve Budka, Betty Nordsrom, Carl Huddleston and Ray Schwenk; and Marilyn Kurtz, Jim Daube, Chuck Eaton and Dave Kaminski. OREGON TOWNSHIP HOMEMAKERS MEET The Oregon Township Homemakers Gub met on Tuesday, September 9, at 1:00 p.m., where 16 members were present to enjoy a delicious dessert served by the hostesses Josephine Ivancevich and Lillian Morganelli. Gub president, Margaret Moravek, opened the meeting with the salute to the flag followed by the repeating of the club creed. Devotions were given by Esther Smith. Roll call was taken by members answereing to something I got accomplished this summer. The secretary and treasurer's reports were given. Mrs. Smith gave the health and safety report on the eyes, back, ears, sleep, feet and osteoporosia. Gub members who entered crafts in the Starke Co. 4-H Fair, at Hamlet, this summer, displayed their beautiful winning items and the ribbons they received. Vee Shogren entered the china plate painting division with her wooden framed painted rose plate which took grand champion reserve honors and first class in the open class and received a blue ribbon; wild pink rose plate, framed in blue, reserve champion, first place blue ribbon and her blue pansy painted plate, reserve champion, first prize in the open class and received a pink ribbon. Viola Bregi entered a pink and white pearled finger sing, which took first place in the open class and she received a blue ribbon. Lucille Dipert entered a chrome framed lawn chair which was done in macrame woven cord, second place in the open class division and she received a red ribbon. Doris Vasil entered an 8 x 10 cross stitch country picture with the words “Welcome To Our Place”, which took first place in the open class division and she received a blue ribbon and she also entered a bear paw pattern quilt which took second place in the open class division and she received a red ribbon. Everyone enjoyed the presentation and the ladies were congratulated on their fine work. Pictures were taken and will be entered into the club's album. The meeting closed with the club prayer. Card bingo was played with the lucky winners receiving a prize. The next meeting will be on Thursday, October 11, at the Koontz Lake Conservation Gub. New members are welcome and the club meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Come and join us. SERVICE NOTES ARMY & AIR FORCE HOMETOWN NEWS - Air Force Tech. Sgt., William G. Elkin, son of Jasper N. and Martha M. Elkin, of Rural Route 3, Walkerton, has arrived for duty in South Korea. Elkin is a security supervisor with the Bth Security Police Squadron. His wife, Zita, is the daughter of Estilita R. Rodrigo, of 1030 Victoria Crossing. San Antonio, Texas. The sergeant is a 1970 graduate of John Glenn High School, Walkerton.
