After nearly two years of concentrated effort, Mrs. Patty Kennedy, chairman of the John Glenn Home Economics department, has completed the responsibilities of her position on the Indiana State Vocational Consumer and Homemaking Education Committee. Originally selected from among hundreds of applicants from all over the state on the basis of her previous experience and classroom accomplishments, Mrs. Kennedy led the team designated to develop the curriculum in the area of ‘‘Global Aspects Os Food And Nutrition”. Her work was enthusias-

tically received by the State Technical Committee and was, subsequently, pilot-tested in schools all over the state. Afterwards, the writers and pilot teachers met to discuss any necessary revisions. This fall, Mrs. Kennedy’s efforts will be published in the new State Curriculum Guide, which will be distributed throughout Indiana to be taught as part of each school’s Home Economics program. As a result of this new curriculum and her development of educational materials especially designed to supplement the program, Mrs. Kennedy feels that
students will have the opportunity to enhance the basic skills that are incorporated in all areas of the school curriculum, from Mathematics to English. Her program tends to move away somewhat from the more traditional "stitch and stir” concept often used in Home Economics classrooms, while still maintaining a “hands on” approach in areas such as communication skills and the achievement of career-related insights and abilities. “This interdisciplinary approach,” Mrs. Kennedy states, “should go a long way towards satisfying the complaints of many of the business community who express the concern that American students entering the job market are lacking in basic skills and are simply ‘not ready’ for the demands of employment. By gearing the conception of classroom abilities to the ‘World of Work’,” she continues, “students will have their perspectives broadened and have the opportunity to develop skills from which they will obtain a great deal of use as adults, both personally and in the job-market, as well.” On a personal level, Mrs. Kennedy is very enthusiastic about her efforts on this project being responsible for the development of a new attitude in her own teaching, as well. “It’s most exciting to have the opportunity to obtain a clear perspective where John Glenn stands in comparison to other school corporations all over the state. As a result of examining other programs, facilities, supplies and general philosophy of Education, I can see that we’re easily ahead of most of the others. This ‘outside perspective’ can be really valuable to help us understand that what we’re doing is really on target.” As a result of Mrs. Kennedy’s association with this important project, she has been invited to participate at district meetings for teachers of Home Economics statewide to lead orientation sessions for interpreting and utilizing this material and has been requested to review and evaluate Home Economics textbooks from various publishing companies nationwide. One special highlight for her was the opportunity to teach a special “’in-Service” program in “Thinking Strategies In The Home Economics Curriculum” for professors at Indiana State University. She describes the experience as "particularly exciting to be up in front of the same professors 1 had when 1 was a student at Indiana State. Only this time I was teaching them!” WALKERTON TOWN COURT NEWS James G.
