Gail Szady and Ann Rabadis, of Chicago, Illinois, spent several days last week visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Personette. The two girls have recently returned from a three month bicycle trip through Europe. They visited Holland, Belgium, France, Italy, Poland and West Germany. They spent three weeks with Ann’s relatives in Poland which gave them the opportunity to observe life in a communist country, both in cities and on the farms. They reported that living there was much harder than they had expected with the extreme poverty and the people seem very depressed. They said smiling faces are very rare and it’s certainly true that all consumer goods including food are very scarce. They visited the Aushwitz Death Camp, which was an experience they will never forget. They found that with the exception of Poland, camping in Europe was exceptionally nice as the camps are so complete and well maintained. They also had very little language problems. in Holland almost everyone speaks some English and in the other countries they could almost always find someone they could communicate with. Ann speaks fluent Polish so they had no problems there. They came home with many stories and many happy memories and a real appreciation of life in America. After a tour of Fairbanks and a river boat ride we boarded the Midnight Sun Expresstrain to Denali National Park. We had a lont day "safari” through the park seeing grizzles, moose and caraboo. Our train continued on to Anchorage where we
