Falcons Rally To Win Opening Gamo Os Soason The John Glenn Falcons opened the IQS-M season on a very excitni- note Friday night as they traveled to South Central to play the Satellites. High school basketball this year includes a three-point field goal and the Falcons introduction to this new phase was part of what made the first game so thrilling. The fina' score read John Glenn 65. South Central 63. but the game was not always this close as both teams controlled play for periods of time and a pair of free throws by Craig Groves with :0" showing on the clock being the deciding factor. The excitment wasn't over with those free throws, as Tim Ryan, who had hit two earlier three pointers in the final quarter, including one that tied the score at 61 all about a minute earlier, came down floor and let another three pointer fly that would have won the game, but it went in and out at the buzzer.
giving the young Falcons their first win of the year. This game found Glenn breaking from the gate well in the first half, and with some pretty balanced scoring, building up a first half lead of 36-27 os _r the host Satellites. Bob Porter was the leading scorer in this half, getting all of his 10 points in the opening 16 minutes. Rob Nickles had eight, including Glenn's only three pointer of the night. Todd Clifton nine and Steve Runyan. Scott Hall and Charlie Winger had 5. 4 and 2 respectively for the balanced attack. South Central meanwhile was kept in the game by Mike Miller, who totaled 14 of their first half 27 on six baskets and a pair of frve throws. The second half was somewhat different. The Satellites came out more aggressive on offense, and outscored the Falcons 23-13 in the third quarter, including seven of eight points from the foul line as they ready were forcing the action. This gave them a 50-49 lead going into the do-nr-die last quarter. The Falcons rebounded in this final period, they got back on the track and regained the lead early in
this period. They aided their own cause in the final stanza with some fine free throw shooting, hitting six out of six. a trademark of a Gordon Mosson coached team. The Satellites meanwhile struggled again in this quarter hitting only four baskets, but two of them were the keythree pointers by Ryan. And to further their woes, after a fine free throw shotting thiid quarter got them back in the game, a very cool 2 out of 5. including the front end of a couple of one-and-ones, hurt the cause. The two winning free throws by Groves were his only points of the night. The balanced Falcons were led by Hall's 16 for the game, half of these coming in the crucial fourth quarter. Nickles had 14, Porter 10 and Clifton 9, with good support from Winger, Runyan and Groves. Winger pulled in a team leading 9 rebounds while Runyan and Hall had six each, all of Runyan’s coming on the offensive board. Miller led the losers with 16 points while Ryan had 14, Sallee and Johnson 13 each. However the support below that wasn't there. Miller also pulled down a game
