BENDIX WOODS ACID RAIN MONITOR SITE Bendix Woods County Park, in New Carlisle, has just been registered as an Acid Rain Monitor Site in conjunction with a program sponsored by the National Audubon Society. Participants in the national monitoring network are required to collect and record the acidity of rain or snowfall at the site. Data is then relayed to the Audubon’s Acid Rain Center and local media. Results will also be posted in the park’s Nature Center. The National Audubon Society is leading an initiative to inform the public and elected officials about the occurances and severity of acid precipitation. Power plants, other coal burning sources, and motor vehicles emit pollutants that combine with moisture in the air to produced acid rain. This has already caused major damage to forests and water ways. However, the damage can be reversed once the sources of acid rain are controlled.
