Your Hoosier Doctor Says . . . November la National Diabetes Month November is National Diabetes Month and the theme this year is "Fight Some Os The Worst Diseases Os Our Time — Support The American Diabetes Association". The Indiana State Medical Assoctatiuon says that diabetes affects at least two in every hundred Americans and almost half of the five million diabetics in the U. S. don’t even know they have the disease. In its early stages, the symptoms of diabetes are mild, which is why so many diabetics are still unaware they have the disease. Typical symptoms of diabetes are increased thirst, sudden weight loss accompanied by increased appetite, vision changes, increased urination and frequent fatigue and weakness. Heredity, age and obesityare factors that make some people more prone to develop diabetes. There are two types of diabetes: juvenile diabetes and adult onset.

Juvenile diabetes usually occurs in youngsters and adults under 40. It is also referred to as "insulin dependent" diabetes because it develops when the pancreas fails to produce and release sufficient levels of insulin. Insulin breaks down the carbohydrates (sugars and starches) to allow the body's cells to use them. Without insulin, the carbohydrates aren't metabolized and can't be used by the body as energy. They move through the kidneys and into the urine. The body must then use stored fat and fat from the diet for energy. This creates too many fatly acids, the acids the body uses to bread down fats. Too many fatty acids can poison the body and lead to coma and death. People who suffer from juvenile diabetes can control it through diet, exercise and insulin injections. Adult-onset diabetes usually occurs in adults over 35 who are obese. Adult onset diabetics have a high — not low — insulin level in the body. The insulin though, is less effective than in normal, healthy adults. Since they do manufacture some insulin, some
adult-onset diabetics benefit from taking medications that stimulate the pancreas to increase insulin production. Patients with mild adult-onset diabetes can often control their disease by diet alone. Low-fat foods and physical exercise can help build cells which are more receptive to insulin while helping the patient shed excess pounds. If left untreated, the high levels of carbohydrates in the blood slowly damage various parts of the body, including the heart and the circulation of blood to the legs. Patients whose diabetes is in reasonable control can live their lives with minor inconveniences and do nearly everything they might have done without diabetes. The clue to successful control of diabetes is early detection, understanding rather than fear, and a well-man-aged balance among food intake, physical activity and insulin or oral medication. ISMA recommends you consult your doctor if you experience the symptoms of diabetes, especially if diabetes seems to run in your family.
