The Hoosier Spell Bowl is a team concept with no individual winners. Falcons Fall To North Newton In Sectional Game The North Newton Spartans were just too much for John Glenn's Falcons on Friday night as the secondranked 2-A team ran all over the Falcons by a 42-0 score to advance to the sectional finals this Friday night against North Judson. The Spartans are 9-1 on the season, their only loss coming at the hands of North Judson earlier this season while the Falcons end their season with a 5-5 record, a good accomplishment for a team dominated by underclassmen. JG Statistics NN 10 First Downs 13 109 Rushing 245 40 Passing 63 13 Passes Attempted 5 Passes Completed 3 5 Had Intercepted 1 5 Punts 3 29‘/j Average Yards 27 1 Fumbles 2 1 Fumbles Lost 1 45 Yards Penalized 72 The host Spartans scored early to take a lead and then continued to dominate the line of scrimmage and featured the fine running of Bernie Doyle as they moved to the easy victory. Doyle broke loose for a 55 yard run on the Spartans first possession and the quick score put the hosts in the driver’s seat as Mark Sintkowski kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. With Glenn unable to sustain anything, the speedy senior Doyle broke another long one on the next possession as this time he scored from 60 yards out and another true kick made it 14-0. The Spartans scored twice more in the first half, both coming in the second quarter on a Eric Spillers to Terry Sintkowski pass good for 27 yards and a lim Fendrick five yard run. This made the score 27-0 before Glenn really had their first good chance of the night, after recovering a North Newion fumble and moving for an apparent score before a Falcon fumble was recovered by the Spartans in the end zone for a touchback. The host team scored once in each of the final quarters as Doyle scored on a 22 yard run and Terry Sintkowski pulled in another Spillers pass for 20 yards to end the scoring for the game. Glenn did make one more serious threat late in the third quarter when they drove almost the lenght of the field before turning the ball over on downs on a crucial fourth and inches at the Spartans 5 yard line. For the game Doyle ended with 171 yards rushing which included 125 in the opening quarter when the Spartans blew the game open early. He also returned an intercepted pass 51 yards as the Spartans picked off five Glenn aerials m this game. The 5-5 season had to be a pleasant surprise for a young Falcon team that listed only a handful of seniors on their roster.
