Falcens Run Over Triton 20-0 In Rile & Wind On a rainy and very windy night, the John Glenn Falcons took advantages of several opportunities and behind a strong defense and very successful running attack out of the wishbone offense, dominated the Triton Trojans for a 26-0 victory on the Triton field. More often than not this year it has been Glenn that has been giving up the ball on turnovers and having their opponents use their breaks to the best advantage, but Friday night the tables were reversed. The victory was the first conference win for the Falcons, now 1-3 in conference play, but 3-3 overall and certainly looking like a vastly improved team the last couple of weeks. Triton is 2-4 for the season with both wins over conferecne foes who defeated the Falcons, LaVille and Knox. 2 Fumbles 5 1 Fumbles Lost 2 15 Yards Penalized 25 62 Offensive Plays 45 The game started out with the Falcons kicking to the Trojans and the early play was fairly even with neither team being able to move consistently in the adverse weather conditions. After failing to get a first down. Triton kicked back to Glenn and on the second play, a fumble was covered by the Trojans' Jim Shively and one had to wonder if "here we go again". However, the defense, which has done a creditable job all year, held and several exchanges of possession followed with neither team gaining any advantage. Two big breaks did occur in the first half that had a lot to do with the eventual score by the Falcons. With a strong wind at his back, Willie Hostrawser got off two long punts in the first quarter, one for 59 yards, to keep the play deep in Triton territory after the Glenn fumble opportunity was not capitalized on. Then, later in the half, well into the second quarter, a Triton punt attempt found the kicker muffing the ball and he failed to get his kick away, being chased down by the Falcon linemen for a large loss and Glenn’s ball first and 10 at the Trojan 21. On the first play, Dan Gingenpeel ripped up the middle for 10
yards. The next two plays found John Pinckert and Gingenpeel picking up five and four respectively, but it took two more carries to get a first down at the one yard line. Then it took three plunges into the line before Gingenpeel broke through for the game's first score with just 1:06 left on the clock. Greg Vandall kicked the extra point and the first half ended a few plays later, 7-0 Glenn. The Trojans made what turned out to be a bad decision to start the second half. With the Falcons getting the ball, Triton chose to kick into the wind and have this advantage in the final quarter. A good kickoff return by Rick Hummer got the ball to the Triton 49 yard line. After a one yard loss on first down, Mike Radandt took a pitchout from Pinckert going wide right and got away from one tackler to have an opening down the sideline and romped 50 yards for the TD. Vandall again kicked the extra point and it was 14-0 with only 1:13 gone in the second half. An exchange of possession by both teams gave Triton the ball back in their own territory again when Hostrawser intercepted a pass over the middle and returned it eight yards to the Triton 33 yard line. From here it took eight plays, seven on the ground and an incomplete pass, before Gingenpeel broke over from two yards out for another Glenn TD. This time the extra point was blocked, but it was Glenn 20, Triton 0. with 2:23 left in the third quarter. The Falcons recovered a Triton fumble the next possession for the Trojans as Hostrawser ended up on the loose ball. This gave Glenn great field position and the quarter ended with them at the Triton 23 yard line with a third and one. After getting one more first down, the Trojans stopped the Falcons but Vandall booted at 27 yard field goal into the wind to give the Falcons a 23-0 lead with time now down to 10:01 in the final quarter. This culminated a nine play drive that started at the 43 after the fumble recovery. From this point on. Glenn just continued to dominate the game. A pass interception by Steve Runyan stopped the Trojans deep in Falcon territory and after sustained a drive for 11 more plays, including a 15 yard personal foul on Triton and a 35 yard run by Radandt, coach Dennis Rippy settled for another Vandall field goal on a fourth and one from the two. The 19 yard kick was good and with 3:07 left, it was just a case of playing out the time for the 26-0 victory. For the winners, Radandt ended the night with 117 yards on 11 carries to pace the running game. Gingenpeel had 57 yards on 17 tries and Pinckert 44 on 13 carries. On defense, the three interceptions by Hostrawser, Runyan and Marty Hesch and two fumble recoveries by Gary Strong and Hostrawser, stopped potcntional drives by the Trojans and gave Glenn some excellent field position on a couple of the turnovers. Final Home Game Friday On Friday night, the Culver Cavaliers, who just broke the state’s longest losing streak last Friday, will visit for the final home game of the season in regular season play. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Falcons field.
