SPUD BUDDIES MEET Sandy Spencer hosted the April 23 meeting of the Spud Buddies Homemakers Club at her home with vice-president, Patty Roush, conducting the meeting. Five members were present along with one guest, Ann Prout. The meeting opened with the creed and pledge of allegiance. International Day was discussed with Chris Houston presenting several items that she had received from a friend in Venezuela and she also let everyone sample a Venezuelelan bar cookie. The club baked 350 bar cookies for the International Day that was held at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds. Mrs. Spencer asked for all to start saving Prego labels for a student/school oriented project. Joyce Liggett is in charge of preparing the dessert of the month for May. Chris Houston presented an article on hearts and coronaries from Health magazine and it mentioned that housewives are in stressful situations and more prone to heart disease than a career oriented woman. Mrs. Spencer demonstrated the lifted star and gave out handouts

JULIE BEEM ATTENDS HOBY SEMINAR Nearly 200 high school sophomores from the western half of In diana will be in Indianapolis May 29-31 participating in the Indiana Leadership Seminar of the Hugh O’Brien Youth Foundation (HOBY), being held at Indiana Uni-versity-Purdue University at Indianapolis. Julie Beem is attending from John Glenn High School. The Indiana Leadership Seminar is an all-expense paid annual event to honor and encourage high school sophomores to actively pursue leadership. Students participating in the HOBY Seminar interact with leaders in business, government, industry and education. Four states have active volcanoes: Washington, California, Alaaka, and Hawaii. Though popular for many years, "The Star Spangled Banner" did not become the national anthem until 1931
