OBITUARIES

HOWARD E. PALMER Howard E. Palmer. 72, of 505 W. Maple Avenue, North Liberty, was found dead by the Indiana State Police about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 4. on County Road 600 North, about three miles east of Hamlet. According to the Starke County Coroner, Douglas O’Donald. Mr. Palmer died of a heart attack. Police said Palmer was driving on County Road 800 East when he apparently stopped his car and got out. His body was discovered along the roadside. He was born on November 4, 1914, in South Bend and moved to North Liberty in 1946. On January--23, 1927, in South Bend, he married Ruth Barbknecht. who preceded him in death on September 8, 1978. Surviving are two sons. Harold, of North Liberty, and Jack H., of Elkhart; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister. Ethel Warren, of Nevada. Indiana; and a brother. Richard, of Florida. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, in the A. M. Manuel Funeral Home, North Liberty, with Rev. David Shoup officiating. Burial was in Westlawn Cemetery, North Liberty. He was a member of the Grovertown Conservation Club, president of the congregation of the Grace Lutheran Church, of which he was a member. North Liberty. EMMA KELLY WOOD Emma Kelly Wood. 98. of Miller’s Merry Manor. Walkerton, formerly of North Liberty, passed away at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. January 1. in the nursing home. She was born on March 14. 1888, in Liberty Township and was a lifelong area resident. She married Clifford Wood on February 24,

1905, in St. Joseph County, who preceded her in death in 1954. Surviving are two daughters. Esther I. Smith, of South Bend, and Phyllis J. Lute, of Walkerton; a son. James K. Wood, of Yucaipa. California; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. January 4, at the North Liberty Church of Christ, with Rev. Charles Richmond, pastor, officiating. Bueial was in Eastlawn Cemetery. North Liberty. Mrs. Wood was a member of the church and a past matron and 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 290. The A. M Manuel Funeral Home. Givens. 51, formerly of Walkerton, passed away on December 31. 1986, in University of Michigan Hospital. Ann Arbor. Michigan, after a six month illness. He was born on July 31. 1935. Surviving are his wife. Babette; nine children, Ronny, and Donna Fisher, of Knox; Hobert, Ruthland. Vermont; Randy and Sheila. Walkerton; Jackie. Knox; Madeline Chilson. Chris Howards, Elizabeth Sowards, of Wyandotte. Michigan; 20 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Also, four sis ters, Judy Compton, Lottie McCammon. Barbara Wilson, Evelyn Mesquiti; and four brothers, James. Jimmy. Durwood and Mike. Services were held at the Martenson Funeral Home. Trenton, Michigan, with burial in Ferndale Cemetery.
