Northern Indiana Historical Society Receives Honor The Northern Indiana Historical Society is proud to announce (hat it has been awarded a Certificate of Commendation by the American Association for State and Local History for preserving and promoting the historical and cultural heritage of St Joseph County and Northern Indiana The Associa lion’s awards program is the na tion's most prestigious recognition for local history achievement Nominations are screened at the state and regional levels by a national network of judges. Only those nominations approved in these preliminary competitions are considered for national honors. A national selection committee, composed of leaders in the history and museum profession, review the

The Northern Indiana Historical Society was nominated by the Indiana Historical Society, and is only the 4th institution in Indiana to receive the award in the 42 years it has been presented. The American Association for State and Local History, headquartered in Nashville. Tennessee, is a non-profit educational organization with a membership of over 6.000 individuals and institutions. AASLH works to advance know ledge, understanding and appreciation of local history in the United States and Canada. It publishes books, technical reports, a monthly newsletter, and a bimonthly magazine. holds an annual meeting, and offers educational materials for sale to professional and volunteer
workers in the field of state and local history. rhe Northern Indiana Historical Society in South Bend, was organized in 1867 by concerned citizens of our community. For 120 years the Society has had the following mission: To institute and encourage historical inquiry and research; to collect and preserve historical materials of the St. Joseph River Valley region; and to disseminate historical information to the community. We strive to accomplish our mission by seeking out and preserving materials which relate to this region's history The Museum maintains extensive historical collections, including special collections of antique toys and mechanical hanks; antique dolls; historic costumes and accessories; furniture; paintings; Christmas ornaments; and a large photo, archival and research library collection. There are a number of curators in the Museum who devote the majority of their time caring for this outstanding collection. The NIHS also provides the community and our school children with a wide-ranging educational program. share it's large collection with the community. — Lectures, slide presentations, movies, entertainment, theatre, creative dramatics, arts & crafts workshops which all use our region's history as a teaching tool for the community. — A Junior Historical Society for students aged 12-19. — Research and genealogy services. — Special programs as the Holiday Celebration held in the Museum every December which gives members of the community a chance to step back in time to Christmases of yesteryear. — Internship opportunity for area university and high school students. The Certificate will be prominently displayed in the Museum so it can be shared with the members, of the community who have helped to make the NIHS an award-winning museum. POSTER CONTEST As a prelude to Indiana’s Poison Prevention Week activities, the Indiana Poison Awareness Council is requesting young artists to enter a statewide poster contest. Children in grades 2 through 7 are eligible to enter the contest. Prizes of SIOO. SSO and $25 will be awarded in each of three age categories, with the grand prize winner receiving $250 plus prizes. The grand prize winner's art will be displayed on major media throughout
