CHRISTMAS SEAL BALLOON-A-GRAM SALE ail i mHHmhbihnb
In the spirit of fun, friendship and generosity, Urey Middle School Voyager Club helped raise money for the American Lung Association by selling Christmas Seal Balloon-A-Grams. Urey students contributed 50 cents for a chance to send a personalized message to a friend using a balloon. Balloon-a-Cougars Edge Falcons In First Conference Game The John Glenn Falcons dropped a key Northern State Conference game 44-43 Friday night to the New Prairie Cougars on the Falcons home court. The game, although only decided at the final buzzer by a single point, didn't always have that kind of excitement as it was a slower paced game that had good and bad streaks by both teams. However, trailing 44-37 after Jamie Jurkowski hit the first of two free throws with 55 seconds remaining, the Falcons did make it close with the game's last six points and had the ball out of bounds on the far end of the court with :03 showing on the clock. Despite the fact many thought a desperation shot by Chris Savoie from about 50 foot would have won the game. Savoie had clearly stepped out of bounds before releasing the ball and the official did make the call amidst all the noise in the gym. but time expired at the same time and they just let it die that way. The loss was Glenn’s third in five games and for New Prairie it was their second win in four contests. The two teams were both playing their first conference game. The Falcons now face the easiest part of their schedule for a few games as not really too much established competition lays ahead for a while. This is the same point in the schedule that last year found the Falcons increasing their record to a winning 7-5 before losing their last nine games of the year. The game opened rather poorly for the Falcons. New Prairie wasn't exactly burning the nets up either, but did get the game’s first three baskets on fielders by Brian Witkowski, Russ Allegrette and Don Ritschard. This took over two and a half minutes while Glenn was doing nothing. Rob Nickles finally put the Falcons on the board with a 12 footer from the lane with over three minutes gone and then it was another break in scoring before Wes Pavey hit a short shot and Roger Spier hit the second of two free throws with only 2:42 left in the quarter. Witkowski got a lay-in on a nice pass from Tom Olson, but a long baseline jumper by Nickles and Brian Groves lay-in on a nice pass from Pavey ended the slow first period 9-8 in Glenn’s
gram deliveries will be made during school on Friday using one of the six Christmas Seals included in the Balloon-a-gram package. The action was slowed down intentionally by coach Gordon Mosson who was very aware he couldn't run with the Cougars. He had to make it a half court game and was successful in doing this most of the time. An attempt to pressure the Cougars early in the second quarter found them getting the game's next four baskets in less than two minutes before Mosson called a timeout and slowed down the pace once again. It was then another Glenn streak, getting eight points of their own before New Prairie broke their drought with 3:45 to play when Olson hit a 17 footer. One of two from the line by Tom Washburn was followed by two free throws by Spier only to have Witkowski hit a corner shot with 1:34 left to end the first half scoring. 21-19 Cougars. Glenn did not score a basket in the final 3:56 of the half when Spier's tip-in was the end of their eight point run. The third quarter was heavily New Prairie’s quarter despite the fact that Witkowski, their leading scorer, picked up a quick fourth foul and was on the bench. In this eight minutes the Cougars hit seven baskets to four for Glenn and increased their lead to 35-27 with one quarter to play. The final stanza started out as a basket trading slow paced scoring period. Brian Groves hit first on a tip. but Dan Andnson answered with a short jumper. Savoie got a 12 footer to fall, but Allegrette made a rebound lay-in for the visitors. Nickles was next with a 14 footer, but Olson answered this with a nice move underneath for a lay-in. Nickles then hit again from medium range on the side, but Witkowski. just back in the game, got a lay-in for the Cougars as the clock was down to 2:47. Nickles hit a pair of free throws ten seconds later and then the better part of two minutes ran off before Jurkowski was fouled and hit the first of two with only 55 seconds left that gave them the 44-37 lead. For the game Witkowski ended as high scorer with 16 points, all from the field. The Cougars, who often were very inpatient against the Falcon defense, were their own worst enemies, turning the ball over several times inside when they were scoring and taking bad shots on other occasions. They also hit only two of eight free throws, missing two one-and-ones in final 10 seconds that would have put the game out of reach. However, they were saved by a great interior
game by Allegrette and Tim Spear, as these two not only controlled the boards, they intimidated the Fai cons inside to keep them from getting anything going inside. This was reflected by Spier and Pavey combining for only 17 points, five of those coming from the charity stripe. Nickles led the Falcons with 12 points and Pavey did manage to reach double figures with 10. Olson hit 10 for the Cougars other double figure total. B-Team Wins Again The Falcon B-Team once more was triumphant with a 50-33 victory over the young Cougars in the opener. Play In Tourney This Week The Falcons will travel to Culver to play in the holiday tourney on Thursday and Friday nights. They will meet a Triton team that has a 1-5 record on Thursday in the second game after Culver and Argos battle it out in the first game. The consolation and cham- . pionship games will be played Friday night. Box Score New Prairie fg ft fta p Witkowski 8 0 0 4 Ritschard 2 0 0 1 Allegrette 2 0 0 2 D. Washburn 0 0 0 2 Spear 0 0 10 T. The difference came in the second quarter when Glenn outscored their opponents 17-2. Randy Pontius and Steve Foresman led ail scorers with 12 points each. Chris Stedman and Charlie Winger both grabbed eight rebounds while Jerry Beem, who played a very good defensive game along with Aaron West and Randy Pontius, reached for three each. This was truly a team victory. The team is 6-0 with this victory! UREY STH GRADE TEAM NOW 4-1 The Urey Bth grade team raised its record to 4-1 with victories over Argos 49-12 and Culver 32-30. Leading scorer for the Falcons was Stacy Hardesty with 35 points in the Argos game. Urey started off slow with a 4-2 first quarter lead. “Argos tried to stall and we didn't prepare for that", noted coach Christlieb. Urey rebounded with a 21 point second quarter to put the game away. Kevin Patterson scored eight points and pulled down 11 rebounds coming off the bench. “He really played well in the second half, said Christlieb. In the Culver game Hardesty got 20 of his 35 points in a close contest. “Culver was a very good and quick team that gave us problems. We couldn’t match up man for man with their quickness. That's what kept them in the game”, stated Christlieb. The Bth grade suffered its first defeat on Saturday at the North Liberty toumev, losing to Knox 29-26. I R.E.A.L. SERVICES NUTRITION PROGRAM
