However, the game was won in a different fashion than eipected as the young Bobcats rallied together without their leader and one of the area's leading scorers, Scott Blum, who spent most of the game on the sidelines in foul trouble and eventually fouling out of the contest. However. the good play of the two 6'7” sophomores. Matt Joseph and George Smalley, plus the leadership and talent of Rick Budka, was enough to hold off a great late effort by Glenn’s Wes Pavey and account for the victory. The game started just the way it should, with neither team able to gain any advantage. In fact, in the first quarter neither team ever led by more than two points, the most important thing probably was Blum picking up three fouls and Roger Spier two for Glenn. Then, with the score tied at 12 and 12, the worst happened for the Bobcats when Blum picked up his fourth foul just 37 seconds into the second quarter. He went out and wasn’t to return again until the final quarter, playing only a short while then before getting number five. Spier, Glenn’s leading scorer this season, also left the game in the second quarter for some bench time as he picked up his third foul of the game, forcing coach Gordon Mosson to pull him from the lineup at this early stage.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats rallied together and behind Joseph, Smalley and Budka. pulled steadily away as the big boys dominated underneath and Budka was the leader on the floor. By halftime they had moved to a comfortable 10 point lead, 35-25. Glenn was having trouble getting in close for good shots against the big zone defense, and things continued to get worse in the early second half. Late in the third quarter, the Falcons trailed by 13, 53-40, before Pavey put on a real show of shooting the rest of the game. He hit two over the zone in the last minute of the third period to make it 53-44 after three, and then continued his hot shooting from the outside in the final stanza. With Pavey providing the outside punch needed against the zone, the Falcons trimmed the lead to 57-54 about halfway through the last period and got the ball back again with a chance to cut it to one. However, after working the ball around for some time. Budka came to the rescue of the Bobcats when he stole a Falcon pass and drove for a solo lay-in to open up a five point margin with time now being a definite factor. The Falcons did get back to within four, 62-58, shortly after, but a key pair of baskets late in the last couple of minutes by Joseph sealed the fate of the Falcons. In this late rush. Glenn also missed three out of four free throws, two which were the front end of one and ones, to hurt their own cause. The final margin was 66-59, with Pavey hitting a dozen points in this quarter, not missing a shot until a desperation shot at the buzzer missed its mark. Pavey led all scorers for the night with 27 points on a dozen baskets and three of three from the line. He had no double figure help in this game despite balanced scoring behind him, but the totals were just too small. Joseph ended with 22 points on 10 baskets and a pair from the line while Budka had 16 and Smalley 14 for the Bobcats. Blum, in his limited time, had just one basket, his lowest total ever since being elevated to the varsity after the Bi-County tourney two years ago in his freshman season. The Falcons stats weren’t that bad, except for a second quarter that made all the difference. They hit only three of 12 in that period while being outscored by 10 points, more than the margin of victory for the game. The Bobcats size and zone defense had a lot to do with this until Pavey got the hot hand in the second half. B-Team Loom Abo The Glenn B-team also dropped their game to the young Bobcats by a 50-43 score to even their mark at 2-2 for the year. Host New Prairie Friday The Falcons will host the New Prairie Cougars on Friday night in a game scheduled to begin with B-team action at 7:00 p.m. The Cougars are favored as one of the better teams in the area this year and certainly opened some eyes in their opener when defeating the highly ranked Michigan City Rogers team. However, since that win thev have lost to Mishawaka and LaPorte, but they have a fine ballclub. The game was the first Northern State Conference contest for Glenn and boosted their record to 2-1 overall. Culver is winless so far this season. In getting off to the fast start, it was a combination of defense, Culver mistakes and Glenn’s taking advantage of the situations to jump to a 16-9 first period lead. The Falcons outshot Culver 20-6 in number of shots and hit 8 to Culver’s four for the 16-9 first quarter advantage. Roger Spier led the attack with three baskets, while five different Falcons shared the first quarter points. The advantage continued to grow in the second quarter despite the fact that the Cavaliers opened up their attack much more, shooting the ball considerably more, but still not staying up the the Falcons. Spier. Chris Savoie and Bob Porter paced the second quarter attack with six. seven and six points respectively. By halftime the lead had grown to 37-23. The Falcons were not to be denied in this game. They continued to stretch their lead in the third period and only a last quarter flurry by the Cavaliers got the game to within reason. Glenn led 56-39 after three, and a 10 point outburst by Ron Reinholt in the last quarter pulled Culver back to within 10 of the Falcons. It was good balance from Glenn as Spier ended the night with 16 points on seven baskets and two of four from the line. Wes Pavey and Savoie each totaled 15, Savoie s included nine of 11 from the free throw line. Porter also hit the double digits with five baskets. Culver was led by Ron Reinholt and Bill Bauer with 16 each and Greg Lewis totaled 12. Both teams made 28 baskets, but Glenn's 15 of 24 from the line as compared to the seven of 15 by the Cavaliers made the final difference. B-Team Wins Easily The Falcon B-Team raised their record to 2-1 with a convincing 61-34 victory over the Culver reserves in the opener.
