Falcons Start Slow; Drop 56-42 Decision To Clay The John Glenn Falcons ran into two big obstacles Friday night that resulted in their first loss of the young basketball season. In traveling to South Bend Clay, the Falcons encountered a dominating Eric Dittrich, a 6’9” center who dominated the boards, and Rickey Miller, a hot-shooting senior veteran who totaled 30 points and these two provided almost everything Clay needed in winning 56-42. The win was Clay's second in three games this season while Glenn dropped to 1-1 for the year. Clay dominated the early game to the extreme that Glenn never was ahead or even tied once the play began. With the tall center controlling the tip, Steve Scott scored right away for the Colonials and then a pressure defense found Glenn not handling the situation well at all and they turned the ball
over numerous times early in the game. Two of these turnovers ended in easy baskets for Miller and the score moved to 8-0 before the Falcons got their first point, almost halfway through the first period when Rob Nickles got the Falcons first basket. The Falcons did cut the lead to 9-6 before Clay pulled away for a 15-10 first quarter advantage. With Miller scoring very consistently, the Colonials continued to hold a lead all the way through the second quarter. Glenn nipped the count to 18-14 early in the period as Roger Spier found the range for the first time, but the host team, behind a 19 point first half effort, moved to a 31-22 halftime lead. The Falcons, although being hampered by the big Dittrich near the baskets, did try to fight back in the game. Early in the second half, Clay pulled ahead 38-24 before an eight point spurt with baskets by Brian Groves, two by Spier and one by Chris Savoie made it 38-32 before the Colonials got the last basket of the quarter to open an eight point margin once again. It was just a case of too much Clay too early as the Falcons, although never giving up, just were not able to catch up in this game. It was a combination of things that led to this, but the intimidation of Dittrich around the basket and the strong offensive play of Miller held the Falcons to four quarters of only 10, 12, 10 and 10 points, not enought in today's game to get the job done. Miller ended the night with 30 points on 14 baskets and only two of five from the line. He is averaging 3O'/j points a game after three outings this year. Dittrich pulled down 23 rebounds, more than the entire Falcon team pulled down in the game. Spier, despite the fact he didn’t score in the first period and had only four at halftime, did end up with 16 points to pace the Falcons. No other player for either team reached the double digits.
