SALVATION ARMY DRIVE TO DEGIN IN WALKERTON The annual Salvation Army Kettle Drive will begin this Saturday in Walkerton. The annual three-day drive, the three Saturdays prior to Christmas, is the only source of income the local Salvation Army Committee has and must support the efforts of the committee at the holiday season as well as yearround. Once again this year the local committee has asked four service and community organizations to assist by manning the kettles on these three Saturdays. This Saturday. kettles will be placed at the corner of Roosevelt Road and Illinois Street, by Jacob Drugs, and another at the corner of Illinois and Van Buren Streets, by Ray & Ken ny’s Super Valu. The kettles will be manned this week through the efforts of the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce and will be on the street with the bells ringing from 9:00 am. to 5:00 p.m. The local committee is most grateful for the volunteers who serve the drive through their time and efforts regardless of the weather conditions, etc. It is this unselfishness that has made the Walkerton drive successful over the years. With the volunteers help and your donations, another successful drive is expected to help make the holiday season much happier for many Walkerton area families. The following Saturday the Epsilon Chi Tri Kappa and Walkerton Lions Club will man the kettles and the last Saturday the Walkerton American Legion Post 189 will have the responsibility of manning the kettles. WALKERTON TOWN BOARD MINUTES The Walketon Town Board met on November 24, 1986 with the following members present: Arthur D. M. Heemer. Gregory Williams, Margaret Gaddis and E. Gifford Ward. James Clevenger, town attorney, and Kathryn Chrapliwv, clerk-treasurer, were also present. The minutes to the preceding meeting were corrected to read (page 389) "Due to the inability to have the garbage contract available the problem with the contract was tabled to rise at the next Town Board meeting". The minutes were approved as corrected. The personnel handbook was discussed in detail. Some of the discussion was on the number of holidays an employee would receive. whether or not police personnel would receive time and a half if he or she would be scheduled to work on the holday. How many unused sick days an emplvee would be paid for upon separation from the municipality. It was suggested by Mr. Heemer that provisions should be put in the ordinance whereby the employee would be given the proper procedure when wanting to contest anything in the handbook. An ordinance will be prepared by the attorney and presented at the next board meeting for approval. The garbage contract was brought up, however Mr. Richard Hopkins was not presnet to represent Trash-A-Way. An excerpt was read from the garbage contract: "RESIDENTIAL SERVICE. The Contractor will remove from every premise in the Town used for or occupied by a dwelling at least once weekly, all garbage and other kitchen refuse ashes, tin cans and other household refuse when place in containers of 30-gallon capac - ity or less at the curb or alley. Miscellaneous rubbish including appliances and furniture (excluding trees, large shrubs and construction debris) will be removed weekly when placed in alley or at curb." Mr. Heemer made it quite clear that he did not wish to get rid of the services of Trash-A-Way but that he merely wanted them to do the job as stated in the contract. He had also inquired into what service other towns were using and found out that Bremen used Hoosier Waste at $1.90 and Bourbon uses Mill work Sanitation at $3.50. It was then suggested that Walkerton would probably consider putting the contract up for bid in the future. The attorney was advised that the Board would like an amendment to the ordinance *l- - An Ordinace of the Town of Walkerton, St. Joseph County. Indiana. providing for the Regulation, Storage. Pickup. Handling, Transportation and Disposal of Garbage, Trash and Refuse Within the Town of Walkerton and Providing for Certain Penalties for the Violation Thereof. That amendment will state the procedures for leaf pickup. George Pansner, representative for Quality CATV was present to notify the Board of Quality CATV transfer of the cable TV franchise and cable TV agreements to Tnax Communications Inc. Mr. Steve Trippe, a representative from Triax Communications Inc., was present (continued on page 12)
