THANKSGIVING 1986 As we again pause for Thanksgiving, we can stop and think of many reasons to be thankful. Despite ups and downs in everyone’s lives, realistically we can all find many things to be thankful for. And this year is no exception. Basically we still enjoy freedom. It is true we have armed forces around the world and in some cases in areas where we do not consider things as safe as we would like, but by and large we still remain a free country and not at war with any other countries as is not the case in many parts of the world. The same forefathers that from that first Thanksgiving Day on had reason to be thankful, right on through those that basically set the foundation for our country as we know it today, all have had to endure hardships and other adversities and really did know the true meaning of being thankful. In today’s life style and times, we take most of this for granted. Oh yes, we say we are thankful for the many blessings bestowed on us, but in many cases have not had to endure the hardships and trials and tribulations that many before our time did to really understand the meaning of being thankful. Thanksgiving is as much a family day as any holiday we have. And when families get together, whether large or small, one really has only to look around and see one thing to be very thankful for. Good health and happiness in a family is one of the greatest assets anyone can have and this can be seen at Thanksgiving time right on through Christmas ... a period of time that almost all families will be together at one time or another. It is true that Thanksgiving and Christmas have become so closely associated ... as Thanksgiving parades and the holiday period of Thanksgiving certainly are the big kick-off for Christmas. In fact, Christmas has been much on the minds of retailers and merchandisers for some time now and Thanksgiving often almost gets lost in the shuffle. But regardless of the plans, take a little time sometime this holiday period and really realize just how fortunate we are and the many things we do have to be thankful for.
