Mulligan Chosen As Indiana’s Teacher Os Year A high school English teacher who describes teaching as "The glory of the past, the hope of the present and the promise of the future” is Indiana’s 1987 Teacher of the Year. Robert S. Mulligan, chairman of the English Department at John Glenn High School, in Walkerton, will receive the SI,OOO prize provided by the Indiana Farm Bureau. Mulligan, who will represent Indiana in the National Teacher of the Year program, is a resident of the neighboring community of Knox where he serves as an elected member of the Knox Community Schools board of trustees. Mulligan’s award was announced at a news conference Friday, November 14. at the John Glenn High School, by Dr. William Christopher. senior officer of the Center for Professional Development in the Department of Education. Christopher served as chairman of the Teacher of the Year selection committee. 'Bob Mulligan is a most talented teacher who exemplifies the very best of our Indiana teaching profession,” said State Schools Superintendent H. Dean Evans. of knowledge and truth. He is universally respected by all members of his two school communities. We’re proud to have Bob Mulligan represent Indiana’s teachers. "I have often thought that a truly successful teacher must demonstrate mastery of the "JC Syndrome’,” Mulligan writes in his Teacher of the Year application — the control and dedication to achievement of Julius Ceasar, the compassion, sincerity and self-sac-rificing love of Jesus Christ, and the lightness of approach and sense of humor of Johnny Carson.” The third-generation of his family to be an Indiana teacher. Mulligan is a member of the National Education Association. Indiana State Teachers Association. John Glenn Education Association, National Council of Teachers of English, Indiana Council of Teachers of English and the Indiana Speech Association. Mulligan is also a member of the Indiana School Boards Association. Mulligan has served as the John Glenn curriculum coordinator where he wrote the school district's first coordinated English curriculum for kindergarten through 12th grade. He has served on committees responsible for the development of teacher evaluaation and substance abouse policies. and has taught general English in the John Glenn Adult Education program and a special enrichment course in world literary classics at the Knox public library. As chairman of the English Department at John Glenn for the past 17 years. Mulligan has produced and directed over 40 student plays and has written six plays

based on insights gained from working with teenagers and foreign travels with his students. A video tape of one of the plays is used annually in a family living class as part of a unit based on interpersonal relationships between adolescents and their parents. His playwright success has earned him recognition in Who’s Who Among Contemporary American Authors. Mulligan earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from Indiana University, Bloomington. The teacher of the year and finalists were selected by a committee of representatives from major state educational organizations. Judging criteria are prepared by the Council of Chief State School Officers, a national sponsor of the program. Mulligan and the nine finalists will be recognized at the annual Teacher of the Year banquet sponsored by the Indiana State Board of Education on December 3, 1986, at the Embassy Suites North in Indianapolis. SENIOR CITIZEN BOWLING NEWS Despite the worsening weather, the Senior Bowlers were out to make the pins fall again this past week, with one spectator and 29 bowlers in attendance. The gents were witness to a real tight competition, with Marion Anderson and Eli Sobat in a "shootout” all the way! Marion’s high scratch game of 221, bested Eli's 201. Marion took high handicap game by just two pins, posting a 242 as opposed to 240 for Eli. There were three other gents with a 500 or better series. Harold Schweder

There was similar lively competition among the ladies. Care Martin’s high scratch game of 177 just bested Marty MalstafTs 170. Marty had the high handicap game of 239, followed by Clare’s 234, Helen Bowman's 214 and Mildred McKesson’s 203. The high series was rolled by Gare Martin, who totaled 448. Marty Malstaff s 420 was second and Helen Bowman’s 404 was third. Nice competition, ladies! Sgt. B. Klemm, Indiana State Police Information Officer of the Bremen Post presented a very informative program on home security. He made suggestions on many ways we can deter burglars and make a home and one’s belongings more secure. He followed with a question and answer session. Mrs. Kitty Holland, president, then conducted the business meeting. The Spring Arts and Crafts Festival has been set for April 18 and 19 at John Glenn High School. The identification tags are now available for distribution. The cloth tag is made in such away that it can be laced in a child’s shoe or sewn in clothing. Mrs. Helen Savoie announced the final plans for the annual Christmas Bazaar, "Christmas Fiesta”, on Saturday, November 22 at the Masonic Temple. The hours are set at 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Raffle tickets for a handmade quilt, ceramic Christmas tree and authentic Mexican blanket are available from any Tri Kappa member. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs. Diane Wardman and Mrs. Marv Hoover.
