PROJECT SAFE 1986-87 On October 16 and 17, 1986, the Walkerton Clerk-Treasurer’s Office will take applications for Project Safe applicants 60 and older. Please sign up for an appointment on the sign up sheet in the Clerk-Treasurer’s Office. You may also telephone to set up an appointment. Income guidelines to qualify for Project Safe for applicants 60 and older are: Number In Household Gross Annual Income 1 $ 8,040 2 10,860 3 13,680 4 16,500 5 19,320 6 22,140 This year, all income must be calculated and verified on the last 12 months of income prior to the date of application. The following list details types of income included which will need verification: a. Wages and salaries before deductions (check stubs will be needed for verification) b. Social security and/or welfare benefits c. Alimony and/or child support d. Dividends and interests e. Rents and royalties f. Income from estates and trusts g. Unemployment benefits h. Workman’s compensation i. Strike benefits j. Veteran’s benefits k. Training stipends 1. Government and private pensions m. Insurance benefits and annuities n. Black lung pension payments o. Severance pay p. Self employment If a person who is 18 years or older resides in your home, their social security card and income will be needed for the application. If they are the primary breadwinner for the household, they will need to fill out the Project Safe application personally. A copy of the income worksheet for determination of income is printed below. Mrs. Martha Noreikis and Mrs. Fran Sohn. A coffee break on the way in and the evening meal were enjoyed at Bob Evans. Luncheon was at 12:00 noon in Old Town. Mr. and Mrs. Keith Anderson, of Monroe, Michigan, spent Thursday with Mrs. Esther Kaufman and Mr. and Mrs. Amos Bierly. Friday they all visited with Mrs. Susan Taylor, a resident of Hubbard Hill Estates, near Elkhart. On the way home they called on Rev. and Mrs. Thomas Wiegand, in Mishawaka. Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Wiegand are nieces of Mrs. Kaufman. The Koontz Lake Conservation
Club dinner on Saturday evening will not have a designated host but members and their guests will enjoy a pot luck dinner with volunteer help in the kitchen. Last Friday Miss Ethel Bierly spent the day in Winona with friends she had made while she was teaching in the Wabash Schools. This is a yearly event and the ladies came from Marion, Anderson, LaFountain and Wabash to visit and to recall good times they had experienced in the past. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Ludwig, of Mount Clemons, Michigan, are spending a week here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Knowlton. Mr. Ludwig is in the Hospital Corps in the U. S. Navy, stationed in Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Clell Fouts attended the wedding of Mrs. Olive Lowry to Howard Shafer, in Kingsford Heights, at the Wesleyan Church. Mr. and Mrs. William Dickson and Debbie, of Glenview, Illinois, and Mr. Jeff Greenbaum, were weekend guests of Mrs. Lucille Dickson at Koontz Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lutomski left on Thursday for their home, in Las Vegas, Nevada. They will be stopping in various places of interest in different states sightseeing along the way. They spend the summers here at Koontz Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Kerchaert entertained his sister, Mrs. Mary Shirk, of South Bend, for her 90th birthday. Other guests were Sylvia Shirk, Mr. and Mrs. Hank Kerchaert, Mrs. Fem Kerchaert and Mrs. Saundra Ochs, last Wednesday evening with a birthday dinner enjoyed by all. Kevin Schweder spent a few days here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Schweder, recently. Kevin is returning to his home in Coronado, California after spending a month in Israel, where he installed some communications and training equipment for the Israel Air Force. While there he visited Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Tel Aviv, the Red Sea. Dead Sea, Sea of Galilee, Masada, Whaling Wall, Garden of Gethsemane and many other places of interest. While returning to the United States he spent a day and night in Amsterdam, Holland. Craig Anderson celebrated his second birthday on Sunday at the home of his parents, Kevin and Pam Anderson. This was also Pam’s birthday. Enjoying the celebration was Ryan Anderson, Karen Personette and children, Marie Anderson, Gerald Howard, Richard and Anna Anderson and Joanna, David and Deanna Shively, Amiee Awald, John and Barbara Slusher, Roberta and Abby, Tom and Denise Shearin, Edith Foltz and Roger Taylor. Fourteen members of the North Liberty Church of Christ senior citizens boarded the church van with Bill Limerick as the driver and went to Peddlers Village, Goshen, on Saturday, where they all enjoyed a wonderful dinner and brousing around the shops. They also went to Ligonier where they visited the Fashion Farm home of the Pumpkin Feantasyland. Everyone enjoyed the day and thanks to Bill for driving us. Mr. and Mrs. Leigh Roy Hahn, Mr. and Mrs. Herald Hostetler and Viola Barden spent the weekend camping at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Shaw, in North Liberty. On Saturday Catherine Hahn, Goldie Skinner and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hostetler joined the group for the camp fire and outdoor meal. The Sunday afternoon visitor of Miss Ethel Bierly was Miss Jennifer Smith, of Mishawaka. One-hundred friends and members of the Pine Creek Church met on Tuesday, October 7, at th church at noon, for a bountiful dinner prepared by some of the ladies of the church. Following the dinner, Mary Knepp, president, introduced her cousin, Wilma and her husband, Trinidad Salazar, who are missionaries, in Mexico
and here visiting with relatives. They entertained with song and slides. Guests were present from Elkhart, South Bend, Walkerton and North Liberty. The next gathering will be on November 4, with Gladys Sheneman in charge, this being the Thanksgiving dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Orville Klinedinst accompanied by Mrs. Mamie Hahn, Nora Hahn, Esther Kaufman and Mary Jane Beaty, attended the travelougue given each month in South Bend with this month’s topic on New Zealand. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Ullery attended the Wisler reunion on Sunday which was held at the Stuntz & Hochstetler Pine Forest with approximately 60 present for the day. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Sheneman called on Mrs. Etta Mae Milner Sunday afternoon after having attended the 90th birthday celebration for Lily O’Connor, at the social room of the North Liberty Church of Christ. They took Mrs. Milner a sample of Lily’s cake. Mrs. Milner will be 102 years old this coming Sunday, October 19. Brian and Bruce Mercer have been home from Purdue University during the fall break and on Monday they along with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Ullery, went to Dowagiac, Michigan, to spend the day with Mr. and Mrs. Waldorf Hoover. Monday dinner guests of Miss Ethel Bierly were Mrs. Phillis Gilfoy, Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Gilfoy, Laura and Andrew, all of Blue Jay, California; Mrs. Anna Marie VanDiest, of Lake Arrowhead, California; and Mrs. Gladys Gilfoy, of North Judson. The dinner was at Bishop’s, in South Bend, and the afternoon was spent at the home of Miss Bierly with visiting. Mrs. William Bacewic and Raymond Smith returned home Saturday, from Mesa, Arizona, where they visited with their brother, Ora Smith. Ora recently suffered a heart attack and was in the intensive care unit in Valley Lutheran Hospital, in Mesa. BIKE-A-THON OCTOBER 18 Plans for the October 18 Cystic Fibrosis Bike-A-Thon are progressing along very well reports Mrs. Nancy Reynolds, chairperson, for the event. Sponsor sheets are in the schools in Walkerton, North Liberty and Koontz Lake and students are urged to pick them up in the school offices now. Bikers of all ages, adults and youth, are welcome to take part in this Bike-A-Thon to be held from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18. The starting and finishing point will be at the parking lot of the Walkerton Presbyterian Church with the turn around point at Mr. G’s Dockside Restaurant at Koontz Lake. A beautiful new 12 speed bike, a jam box, and two laige pizzas will be offered as prizes at this event. Everyone should begin now to get their sponsors. You may call 586-3301 for details. CHICAGO OUTLET TRIP IS PLANNED FOR NOV. 18 Come join the shopping and fun on Tuesday, November 18, a bus will leave at 8:00 a.m., from the Presbyterian Church parking lot, in Walkerton, to the outlet shops. Shops that will be visited include Fannie May, Sara Lee, Georgia Nut, Sears, Montgomery Ward and J.C. Penny. Cost for the round trip is $15.00.
