Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Gillen, of Ohio, spent the weekend with Luella Lambert, of North Liberty. Mrs. Barbara Frazier will be leaving the first week of November for McAllen. Illinois last week with her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Todd Beyerl and daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Leigh Roy Hahn representing the District IV Volunteer Firemen, spent the weekend camping with other firemen and their families, at Eby Pines Campground. A meeting and camping session was held. Mrs. Leota Weakly and her mother. Mrs. Nora Hahn, and Mrs. Evelyn Mark, of Dowagiac, Michigan, spent last week in Fairfield Glade, Tennessee, visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kollmar, who were former residents of Fort Wayne. Dr. and Mrs. Richard Hershberger and Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Jacob spent four days last week in New Orleans, Louisana. where it was very hot and many interesting sites were seen. They returned home on Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Eli Sobat will serve as hosts for the Koontz Lake Conservation Club dinner meeting on Saturday night at the clubhouse. Mrs. Marg Curl and Mrs. Lucille Dickson, of Koontz Lake, returned last Friday from a ten day trip by Amtrack to the east coast. After reaching the train station in Philadelphia, they went their separate ways. Mrs. Curl visited with her sister, Mrs. Janet Lee and family, in Haddenfield, New Jersey, while Mrs. Dickson visited with a niece, Mrs. Jeanine Forsha and family, in Wilmington, Delaware. Both enjoyed the time they spent with relatives and friends and the round trip train trip with each other. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Patrick were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Caude Sheneman. Mrs. Orville Kiinedinst was a luncheon guest on Monday of Mrs. Winfred Stayton, in South Bend. A farewell dinner was held on Thursday at the home of Mrs. Vylet Baker, Walkerton, for Mrs. Margurite McCutcheon, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Dorothy and Kenny Reed, of St. James City, Florida. Also observed was the birthday of Margaret Heim, of North Liberty. Other guests present were Ethel Hillegas, Florence Weise and Helen Bricker, of South Bend, and June Weber, of North Liberty. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Kent Poulson, Amy and Ben, of Lake of the Woods, were guests of Mrs. Baker. On Monday afternoon Mrs. Claude Sheneman entertained The Friendly Neighbors Club with seven members and one guest, Mrs. Virginia Ross, present. Refreshments were served by the hostess. Mr. and Mrs. Myron Mullet left on Tuesday for a trip to the upper part of Canada. After seeing all the sights of upper Canada including the Canal and the train trip called Aga, they came south to Walkerton, Ontario, Canada, where they met with a group from home, on Friday, for the weekend festivities, which were planned especially for the Walkerton, Indiana folks. Those attending from the Walkerton Masonic Lodge 619 and visiting with Saugeen Lodge 197, in Canada, were Mr. and Mrs. Orville Kiinedinst, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kiinedinst, Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Elkin, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Kaufman, Jack Cummins and son, and Mrs. Esther Kaufman as well as the Mullets. HOME ENTERED AND MONEY TAKEN LAST WEEK Two men broke into the home of Mrs. Pearl Wolff, 75, Rural Route 4, Walkerton, near Koontz Lake, according to Marshall County Police, around 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1. The auto of the two men had broken down and they knocked on Mrs. Wolff s door, and following an assault on her, took her car and a small amount of cash and fled the scene. Mrs. Wolff was treated and released from Holy Cross Parkview for bruises. A small amount of money was taken from Mrs. Wolff. Be a careful driver always!
90th Birthday Open House On Sunday, Oct. 12 nS An open house in celebration of the 90th birthday of Lilly O’Connor will be held on Sunday, October 12, from 2:30 until 4:30 p.m. at the North Liberty Church of Christ. Mrs. O’Connor was bom on October 15, 1896, and has lived in the North Liberty area all her life and has 10 children, 40 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She is a member of the North Liberty Church of Christ. Friends and relatives are invited to the open house. BIKE-A-THON OCTOBER 18 Hans for the October 18 Cystic Fibrosis Bike-A-Thon are progressing along very well reports Mrs. Nancy Reynolds, chairperson, for the event. Sponsor sheets are in the schools in Walkerton, North Liberty and Koontz Lake and students are urged to pick them up in the school offices now. Bikers of all ages, adults and youth, are welcome to take part in this Bike-A-Thon to be held from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18. The starting and finishing point will be at the parking lot of the Walkerton Presbyterian Church with the turn around point at Mr. G’s Dockside Restaurant at Koontz Lake. A beautiful new 12 speed bike, a jam box, and two large pizzas will be offered as prizes at this event. Everyone should begin now to get their sponsors. You may call 586-3301 for details. ATTENDS BANKING SCHOOL Jay Potts, Walkerton, employed by Farmers State Bank of Wyatt, Walkerton Branch, was among the more than 1,100 bankers who attended the summer two-week session of the Graduate School of Banking, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin. The school is presented by the Central States Conference of Bankers Associations and the University of Wisconsin. There were students present from 36 states and the District of Columbia. Students took dozens of courses covering topics from bank marketing to specialized lending and staff management. The students receive graduation certificates after attending three of the summer sessions and finishing extra problems between terms. DR. FRASH TO ATTEND FALL SEMINAR On Thursday, October 9, Dr. Elliott Frash will be attending the annual Fail Seminar, in Bloomington. Among the topics being presented will be the diagnosis and treatment of the anterior segment of the eye. AREA STUDENT-ATHLETES AT MANCHESTER COLLEGE Manchester College, North Manchester, all seven fall athletic teams are currently competing with student-athletes on four of those
teams at the college from this area. On the tennis team from the area is Kirk Snyder, a graduate of LaVille, and on the women's tennis team is Jill Bolze, a graduate of John Glenn. A freshman at the college, Tim Jessie, a graduate of OregonDavis, is a member of the Spartan soccer team. Playing for the Spartan football team is Jeff Rizek, freshman, a graduate of John Glenn, and Leon Freehauf, junior, a graduate of LaVille. Jayne Cooper New Operations . Manager At Bank FJ 1 - / IT 1 ■ Jayne Cooper has been promoted to operations manager of the Ist Source Banking Center, in Walkerton, according to Wellington D. Jones 111, senior vice president and head of Ist Source’s Personal and Small Business Banking Group. Cooper joined the bank in 1976 as a teller and was most recently a personal banking officer in the Plymouth office. She is a graduate of Oregon-Davis High School in Hamlet, and is presently attending Ancilla College in Donaldson. Cooper has been active in community affairs and has served as the Marshall County Easter Seals Chairman. She resides in Walkerton with her husband Terry and son Jason. CUB SCOUT PACK 293 HOLDS SCHOOL NIGHT On September 22, Cub Scout Pack 293, Walkerton, held their annual School Night for area boys at the Walkerton Elementary School. Also awards were presented to the scouts for summertime activities and service stars. Cubmaster, Kevin Jacobs, presented the following boys with one year service stars: B. J. Morgan, Chris Jacobs, Craig Rogge-Hulse, Ryan Schmeltz, Jason Roberts and Ted Holland. Receiving two year stars were Joey Reinhold, Cory Shively and Brian Ross. Arrow points were received for achievements by the following: Cory Shively, Ted Holland, Craig Rogge-Hulse and B. J. Morgan. Jason Roberts received a sports award in swimming. The evening brought five new Scouts to the pack. Any other boys interested between the ages of eight and 11 please call 586-2013. The next Pack meeting will be on Thursday, October 23, at 7:00 p.m., at the Tynet United Methodist Church. A bake sale by the Scouts will be held on Saturday, I October 11, at the Farmers State Bank lobby to raise funds for the new year. American Red Croes + 'together, we can change things.
