Appointments: Following a motion by Mrs. Beem, seconded by Mr. Peddycord, the Board voted six to zero to make the following staff appointments as recommended by the administration: 1. Linda Truhler, John Glenn High School Special Education Aide. 2. Gary Christlier, Secondary Social Studies Teacher. 3. Jada Connor, Substitute and Temporary Contract to fill maternity leaver at North Liberty School September 29, 1986 to November 7, 1986. E. School Technology Advancement Account Loan: The superintendent explained that the School Technology Advancement Account Loan sponsored through the Indiana Department of Education Common School Loan Fund is available for use by the School Corporation for the purpose of purchasing computer equipment. According to the program formula, the School Corporation may apply for up to $30,000. The Corporation has already received a $25,000 loan which is being used to equip the high school computer lab. These funds will be paid off through deductions from the Corporation’s state support over a two year period at six percent interest. If received and accepted by the Board, an additional loan would also be repaid in the same manner. Dr. Smith explained that this request is not fbr authorization to purchase, but only to apply for the loan. If the loan is received and accepted by the Board, the administration will present a comprehensive purchasing plan to the Board for approval. Approval by the South Bend Board to pay transfer tuition for the following two students is contingent upon test results concerning placement of the students in a prekindergarten program: 1. Jennifer Urganski, PK, North Liberty School. 2. Corey Miller, PK, North Liberty School. Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mr. Miller, the Board voted six to zero to grant a GED Certificate to Tara Schultz. 1. Request for Payment of Tuition: The superintendent explained that the students covered by this request attend Plymouth Community School Corporation on the initiative of the parents to pay transfer tuition costs to that school corporation. A letter from these parents detailing the reasons for their request was submitted to the Board. The superintendent recommended that the Board deny this request on the grounds that the reasons submitted do not comply with the transfer tuition statute. Following a motion by Mrs. Beem, seconded by Mr. Peddycord, the Board voted six to zero to deny the request for payment of transfer tuition by Mr. and Mrs. Stan Filson. J. Financial Statement — July, 1986: The superintendent submitted the financial statement for July noting that appropriation balances are essentially normal, but that it is obvious that salary increases and other costs inflation will put a strain on the remaining budget year. Additionally, it will again be necessary to execute a temporary loan for the purpose of covering cash flow in the latter .months of this year. K. Conference Report: The Board received a written conference report from Mike Shuler, John Glenn High School principal, covering his attendance at the Prin-

cipals Summer Conference. L. Copy Machine Report: The superintendent submitted a written report to the Board detailing copy repairs and costs during the first six months of this year. He also added additional information which showed that the purchase of maintenance agreements on copy machines would cost approximately twice as much as the per call costs basis which is presently used by the Corporation. Mr. Peddycord stated that he was concerned about the total dollars spent on copy machine maintenance and repair. Dr. Smith stated that he and the administrative staff will continue to search for ways in which to reduce these costs and still maintain a high quality of copy service. M. Others: 1. Mr. Millar called to the attention of the Board the recent commentary article found in the South Bend Tribune written by a Plymouth resident which called for elevating athletics to a full curricular status and critized the John Glenn School Board for increasing the academic standards for participation in athletics and other extra-

curricular activities. The superintendent, members of the Board and members of the observing audience all expressed their support for the Board’s action in insisting that high academic standards come fust and that extracurricular activities, although very important, are still a secondary activity of the educational process. NEXT MEETING DATE The Board will meet in special session for the purpose of budget adoption on Thursday, August 28, 1986 at 7:30 p.m. in the library of John Glenn High School. The Board will meet in regular session on Tuesday, September 9, 1986 at 7:30 p.m. in the library of Walkerton Elementary School. ADJOURNMENT Following a motion by Mr. Peddycord, seconded by Mr. Miller, the Board voted six to zero to adjourn at 9:00 p.m. The first lottery in America was held on June 26, 1614 by the Virginia Company.
