Weekend guests of Mrs. Ethel Fields was her sister, Mrs. Harold Whitaker and son, Terry, and Mrs. Irene Cordell, of Salyersville, Kentucky. They were here for the Salyer family reunion which was held on Sunday at the park, in Knox. Nanie Salyers Neighbors was the oldest at 86 years old. and she is the founder of the reunion. There were 56 attending. Family members came from Alabama, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. Mrs. Neighbors is an aunt of Mrs. Whitaker and Mrs. Fields. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Kaufman, Shelly and David, and Mrs. Esther Kaufman attended the Kaufman family reunion, held on Sunday, in New Carlisle, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kaufman. Mrs. Mary Jane Beaty and her guests, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Roberts, of California, spent four days last week visiting with relatives in Ohio. At Penderville they visited with Mrs. Beaty’s sister, Mrs. Ada Felix; at Bell Center they visited cousins and at Fort Wayne, on Friday evening, they vistied with friends. A terrible rain storm came and they were glad to arrive home on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Leigh Roy Hahn spent the weekend in New Carlisle representing the District Four Volunteer Firemen. Other members could not attend on account of duties to perform on the home front. Mrs. Lucille Hocker, of North Liberty, recently spent a week at Manchester College renewing old friendships and acquaintences.

Hosts for the Koontz Lake Conservation Club dinner meeting on Saturday night will be Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Labno and daughter, Gloria. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Keyser, of Vandalia, Michigan, came to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Dick Roberts, of California, and the house guests of Mrs. Mary Jane Beaty, on Sunday evening. They were college friends of Mr. Roberts. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Barden and family, of Sears, Michigan, spent the weekend here with his mother, Mrs. Viola Barden. Mrs. Faye Jones and her granddaughter, Cindy Jones and her mother, of Vermont, who were guests of Mrs. Jones, all attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Garence Awald, on Sunday. Mrs. Don Nicholas is making slow improvement in St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend. Mike Albert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Kerri) Albert, is making improvement after surgery on Friday, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Holsinger were here from Wildwood, Florida, for a week visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Stull and families; Mr. and Mrs. Leßoy Whitaker; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Corbett; and Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Holsinger and family, in Terre Haute. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Pogodzinski, of Chicago, Illinois, spent the weekend with his brother, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Pogodzinski. On Saturday evening Mr. and Mrs. Claude Sheneman were dinner guests.

A bus trip was taken on Monday of this week to Chicago with Mrs. Mary Steinhart, Mrs. Fran Sohn, Mrs. Vi Bregi, Mrs. Harriett Jefferies, Mrs. Selma Pry, Mrs. Alfreda Onika and Mrs. Lucille Dickson making the trip. This was an hour tour on the lake and afterwards a trip through Chinatown was enjoyed. The Chicago Star was the name of the ship that the ladies were on and dinner was enjoyed onboard. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Sheneman and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Patrick were invited guests to visit Sawyer’s Museum of Antiques and Collectibles, in Wakarusa, Sunday. After the tour they enjoyed dinner a| Ponderosa, in Plymouth. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kendall, of Granger, and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Kendall, of Edwardsburg, Michigan, were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Weller. Irene Singleton, Harley Knowlton, Laura Bell Kime and Opal Murphy all enjoyed the trip by American Dream Tours from Plymout, to Sawgatuck Harbor Days Festival, in Michigan, on Saturday. HOLD OXLEY REUNION The Oxley family reunion was held on July 19, at Stuntz and Hochstetler Pines, with 47 present. Family members came from Florida, Texas, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. In the afternoon the kids and some adults enjoyed a hayride. The temperature was well over 100 degrees, but all had a good time. It was decided to hold the next reunion in October. Twenty-nine guests spent the rest of the afternoon swimming at Joe and Dorothy’s. ENJOY TRIP TO CANADA Esther and Gene Gerber returned last Tuesday from a 2,000 mile, 8-day trip into Canada. Thunder Bay, Ontario was the first Canadian stop-over on the trip that encircled Lakes Superior and Huron. The day-long train ride from Sault Saint Marie to Agawa river Canyon and the boat ride through both the American and Canadian locks of the St. Mary’s River were the ideal cap to the first weekend in Canada. The real highlight of the trip came on the last day when the town of Walkerton, Ontario was visited. The Gerbers receiveo a royal welcome by the Chamber of Commerce, Heritage Group (Historical Society) and the Town Clerk and was topped off by an interview and photo session by the Walkerton Herald-Times. ATTENDS SEMINAR Veronica Clark, Walkerton, was among the outstanding high school students attending the July 13-25 session of Indiana State University’s Summer Honors program. The two week sample of university life gave these young people an early start on a college education. They explored their academic interests in either mathematics, theatre, art, English, French and government/politics. Veronica chose mathematics. By attending the honors seminar Veronica earned two hours of university credit and is eligible to compete for an ISU talent grant. Based upon present fees, this grant is worth approximately $4,000 over a four-year period to participants who enter ISU directly following high school graduation. Veronica lived in a residence hall and enjoyed special activities that were planned with the students in mind. + Keep Red Cross ready.
