JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES The Board of Trustees of the John Glenn Schoo] Corporation met on June 24. 1986 at 7:30 p.m. in the library of John Glenn High School. Following Mrs. Manuel's arrival at 8:00 p.m., all Board members were present at the meeting. The superintendent and 10 observers were also present. Following a motion by Mr. Ludwig, seconded by Mr. Hostetler, the Board voted five to zero to one (Mrs. Beem abstaining) to approve the minutes of the June 3. 1986 meeting. Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mrs. Beem. the Board voted six to zero to approve claims numbered 942 through 960 and number 962 through 1.067. Claim number 961 was pulled from the claim sheet so that a credit for returned material could be applied before payment. OLD BUSINESS: A. John Glenn High School Science/Computer Renovation Update: 1. Computer Lab: Dr. Smith noted that nearly all work on the computer lab has been completed by the Corporation maintenance staff. All counters, electrical work, flooring and painting have been completed. The nonchalk marker boards, study tables and the intrusion alarm will be received and installed in the near future. Approximately one half of the new computers have been received, the balance of the order will be received on or about August 1. The Common School Fund Computer Advancement Loan in the amount of $24,999 has been received and will be applied toward the purchase of the new computers. This loan will be repaid during calendar years 1987 and 1988 at six percent interest. 2. Science Department: Mr. Virgil Magerfleisch of Cole Associates presented change order proposals to the Board regarding fire rated ceiling tiles, fire dampers and duct work for additional airflow. Mr. Magerfleisch explained to the Board that the fire rated ceiling tiles and fire dampers were mandated by the Indiana Fire Code. The Board also conducted a discussion concerning how to insure better airflow with the duct work. Following a motion by Mr. Peddycord. seconded by Mr. Ludwig, the Board voted unanimously to approve change orders in the amount of $1,200 and $1,998 with GibsonLewis for fire rated ceiling tiles and Dye Plumbing and Heating for fire dampers, respectively. Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mrs. Beem, the Board voted unanimously to direct Mr. Magerfleisch and Mr. Arden Floran of Cole Associates and Mr. Stull, board member, to resolve the duct work issue without the option of lowering the ceilings and walls in the science department area. Mr. Stull is authorized to approve the necessary change order. NEW BUSINESS: A. Chapter I Application: Mrs. Lightfoot, Walkerton Elementary School principal, presented a Chapter 1 application budget to the Board. She explained that Chapter I funds are used for compensatory and remedial education. Following a motion by Mr. Stull, seconded by Mrs. Manuel, the Board voted unanimously to approve the Chapter 1 application as presented. B. Third and Sixth Grade Competency Test Results: Dr. Smith presented the results of spring competency testing for John Glenn School Corporation and other school corporations in LaPorte, Marshall and St. Joseph Counties. He cautioned that comparison of test results are not to be considered a valid measure of overall school
quality due to diverse factors related to the scores. The remediation program is now in progress and will continue through August 1. C. Student Handbooks: 1. John Glenn High School and John Glenn High School Athletics: Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler. seconded by Mr. Peddycord, the Board voted four (Mr. Peddycord. Mrs. Beem, Mr. Hostetler, Mr. Ludwig) to three (Mr. Millar, Mr. Stull, Mrs. Manuel) to approve the John Glenn High School Student Handbook and the John Glenn High School Athletic Handbook with changes noted. All John Glenn School Corporation student handbooks are to contain the language as found on page ten, paragraph 11 of the John Glenn High School Student Handbook with the work “using” added to the language. The Board also directed that the athletic handbook reflect the regulation that students must be passing five solid classes in order to participate. Mr. Millar and Mrs. Manuel noted that their naye vote was not to be construed that they were against these changes, but that they believed that some form of higher grade standard should be applied to all extracurricular activities and not just athletics. Following a motion by Mr. Peddycord, seconded by Mrs. Manuel, the Board voted four (Mrs. Manuel, Mr. Millar, Mr. Ludwig, Mr. Peddycord) to three (Mrs. Beem, Mr. Stull, Mr. Hostetler) to direct Mr. Shuler, high school principal, and his staff to formulate a plan for applying grade standards to all extracurricular activities and to return to the Board with that plan during the fall semester. Following a motion by Mr. Stull, seconded by Mr. Ludwig, the Board voted unanimously to approve the North Liberty School Student Handbook with changes noted. Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mr. Stull, the Board voted unanimously to approve the Urey Middle School Student Handbook with changes as noted. Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mrs. Beem, the Board voted unanimously to approve the North Liberty School, Urey Middle School, Walkerton Elementary School Athletic Handbook with changes as noted, D. Conference Requests: Following a motion by Mr. Peddycord, seconded by Mrs. Beem, the Board voted unanimously to grant the following conference request: 1. Mike Shuler, John Glenn High School, “Principals Summer Conference”, Indiana University, July 24-25, 1986. E. Conference Reports: The Board accepted written conference reports from the following staff members: 1. Marolyn Millar, John Glenn High School; Marilyn Wallace, Walkerton Elementary School, “Level 111 Hands-On Training Workshop”. 2. Tim Davis, North Liberty School, “Growing Healthy Workshop”. F. Indiana Department of Education Academically Talented Search: Dr. Smith noted to the Board that Edward Karst, an incoming freshman at John Glenn High School, has been identified by the Indiana Department of Education as one of 95 academically talented 11 to 13 year olds in Indiana. As an eighth grader at North Liberty School, Edward scored more than 1,100 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. The average Indiana high school senior, S.A.T. score for last year was 875. Following a motion by Mrs. Manuel, seconded by Mr. Peddycord, the Board voted unanimously to commend Edward for this . achievement. G. Financial Statement - May, 1986: Dr. Smith submitted the May financial statement to the
Board noting that all appropriation balances are normal at this time. He also explained that on June 30 , the Corporation will repay the $400,000 temporary loan which has been drawn for cash flow purposes during this six month period. I The interest on this loan is approxiately $2,100. H. Others: I. Maternity Leave Request: Following a motion by Mr. Stull, seconded by Mrs. Beem. the Board voted unanimously to grant a 47 day maternity leave request to Mrs. Jennifer L. Heemer, Walkcri ton Elementary School teacher. 2. Resignation: Following a ! motion by Mrs. Manuel, seconded by Mr. Peddycord, the Board voted unanimously to accept, with regrets and thanks for a job well done, the resignation of Mr. James Perry, John Glenn School Corporation director of bands. Jim’s letter of resignation explains that he has recently accepted the position of director of marching at North Central High School in Indianapolis. 3. Greene Township Transfer Tuition Requests: Dr. Smith noted that the hearing examiner in the Greene Township Transfer case has recommended that eight of the 52 petitioners be granted transfer tuition to be paid by South Bend Community School Corporation to John Glenn School Corporation. These eight include an elementary and seven middle school students. The State School Board will act upon this matter during the July 3 Board meeting in Indianapolis. NEXT MEETING DATE: The Board will meet in executive session on July 1, 1986 at 6:30 p.m. in the library of John Glenn High School. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss personnel. The Board will meet in regular session on July 1, 1986 at 8:00 p.m. in the library of John Glenn High School. ADJOURNMENT: Following a motion by Mr. Stull, seconded by Mr. Peddycord, the Board voted unanimously to adjourn at 10:05 p.m. EXECUTIVE SESSION: An executive session was held following the regular meeting for the purpose of discussing personnel. No other matters were discussed. Chae Belkiewitz Is Named “Coach Os The Year” ' If. T 1 ,■ * ♦ 1 num Chae Belkiewitz, 27428 Stanton Road, Walkerton, coach of Plymouth High School’s volleyball team, was named as the District 1 Coach of the Year, for the second consecutive year. Belkiewitz, who led the Pilgrims to a 34-5 record, was nominated by the ICGSA Sports Committee and was voted as coach of the year by colleagues at the annual conference which was held on April 24 and 25. She is one of five coaches in the state to receive this honor and she received a certificate from the ICGSA Executive Board. Belkiewitz, who saw her high school team finish as state runnerups for the second consecutive year last fall, is also the chairperson for
1 the Midwest Korean Volleyball Association, She is also a member 1 of the National Volleyball Coaches Association and the USVBA. i Mortgage Burning Ceremony Set At County Line Church The County Line Brethren , Church, across from LaVille High School, on U. S. 31, will hold a 1 week-long mortgage burning celebration, from July 6-13 with the public invited. During the early 60’s the church was struggling with the decision whether to add on to its building or to build a new facility. Then the congregation was hit with disaster on April 11, 1965, when tornados destroyed the church building, at 6:10 p.m. Following the tornado the church stepped out in faith and built a new modern building. The next meeting will be working on the fair booth with Gayla Dipert to have refreshments. SERVICE NOTES ARMY & AIR FORCE HOMETOWN NEWS — Staff Sgt. David W. Flaugher, son of Richard E. and Mary L. Flaughter, of Rural Route •1, Walkerton, has graduated from the Air Force non-commissioned officer leadership school at Grissom Air Force Base, Indiana. The sergeant studied techniques of leadership, management and supervision. Flaugher is a security specialist with the 410th Security Police Squadron at K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base, Michigan. His wife, Janice, is the daughter of Gerald and Evelyn Houser, of Rural Route 1, Walkerton. The sergeant is a 1978 graduate of John Glenn High School, Walkerton.
