falcons Fall In Two Overtimes In Sectional Tourney (continued from page 1) on the clock and the game then went into a second overtime. CMA controlled the ball this time and Todd Shepard canned a lay-in from the baseline just 17 seconds into play, ironically his only basket of the ballgame. Over a minute passed with no score and Brian Groves was fouled on a rebound, but missed and Roger Spier got another offensive rebound and was fouled, making two to tie the score with 1:39 left. The Eagles went right down floor and Matthews did it again, hitting a lay-in as Culver beat Glenn back court press to give the senior forward the lay-in. However, a foul sent Pavey to the line with 1:02 left and he calmly hit both shots to tie it again at 60 all. The Eagles were then content to keep the ball moving on the outside and did not try to penetrate until the clock was running pretty well down. Deery then took a right baseline shot that was almost ill-advised . . . that is until it went in with 12 seconds left. Glenn took a timeout, and after the timeout, inbounded the ball to near mid-court and took another timeout with :09 showing. They didn't get a real good shot, but Pavey rebounded a missed attempt and was fouled with 01 left to get two shots on the rebound attempt. He missed the first pressure shot, and then an intentional miss to try for the rebound basket found the Falcons getting called for a lane violation and the Eagles then inbounded the ball and the gun sounded, ending a real thriller 6260 in Culver’s favor. The game was close all the way through. It figured to be as the two teams had played to a 55-53 Glenn victory in the Bi-County and came into the tourney with almost identical records. Glenn being 7-13 and Culver 8-11. The first quarter was super slow as far as action and scoring was concerned as both

teams were “feeling out” their opponents and it ended with Glenn leading by a 6-5 score. The tempo picked up a little in the second quarter and after Bob Kime hit one of two from the line and then a lay-in for Culver, the teams traded points until the score was tied at 16-16. Every time the Eagles got a two point lead, Glenn came back with a basket to tie it and when Matthews broke the 16 all tie with a lay-in on a fast break at the 2:41 mark. Culver was then able to pull away a little bit. Deery hit from 14 foot in the lane and Tom Mortell got two free throws at the :52 second mark to pull to a 22-16 lead, the largest of the entire game. Things looked a little bad as Glenn wasn't playing all that well in the last couple of minutes, but with 39 seconds left in the half, Chris Savoie hit a 15 footer. After a poor CMA shot missed, Savoie came down floor and made another one, this time from 17 foot. Another poor Eagle effort found Borton getting a chance and he responded with a 12 footer just before the end of the half, to give the Falcons a quick six points, a tie game a lot of momentum as the first half ended. The third quarter was dominated by Kime. The husky 6'3” swingman who can play anywhere for Culver, moved both inside and out in this close period and scored nine points to keep the Cadets in the lead after he broke the halftime tie with a 12 footer. The score was tied four times and a couple of lead changes occured until Kime’s three point play with 1:13 left broke a 36 all tie and Glenn could only manage one of two from the line by Savoie, allowing Culver to take a 39-37 lead into the final quarter. Spier tied the score with a pair of free throws as action started in the final quarter. However, a basket by Deery from the right baseline in close and a three point play by Matthews made it 44-39 with six and a half minutes left. The Falcons then looked to be getting the momentum back as Culver made a couple of turnovers and a pair of Savoie free throws and a basket by Spier cut the lead to
one. A reverse lay-in by Deery opened the gap to three, but coach Bill Hart, not satisfied with the way his Eagles were performing at this point, took a timeout at the 5:19 mark, and here a play that was to loom big in the outcome occured. A technical was called on the John Glenn bench during the timeout as assistant coach Scott Hostetler went to the scorer's bench for some information. This year that is against the rule, a coach can only go to the bench to correct an error or unless he is called there by an official. A manager or statistician can make this trip, but not a member of the coaching staff. Kime responded with two free throws on the technical, giving Culver a five point lead. The Falcons battled back. One of two free throws by Groves were followed by a nine footer by Pavey and then a pair of free throws by Savoie tied the score at the 3:53 mark. Another apparent big play came shortly after, as the Eagles’ Kime was called for a charge on the CMA end of the floor, his fourth foul, and Glenn took the ball downcourt and Spier drew Kime’s fifth foul on a short jumper. He was able to hit only one of two, but the real heart of the Culver team had fouled out and it had to have an effect on the Eagles. Mortell came back with a basket at the 3:14 mark and no scoring occured as Glenn was content to get the good shot, which they did with 1:43 left when Borton, getting only his second varsity start, hit from 14 foot, his fifth basket in five attempts. The Eagles couldn’t respond, and the Falcons appeared to be on their way to victory when Spier was fouled at the :30 mark and hit both attempts. Then Borton was fouled with :17 left after Culver had missed again, and after hitting the first for the 54-50 lead, the rest has been painfully told as the Eagles battled back for the victory.

The Falcons missed quite a few free throws in this game, connecting from the 15 foot line only 18 out of 29. They usually are a more consistent free throw team. They were outscored 54-42 from the floor by the Cadets as Culver only went to the free throw line 13 times, making 8. Spier led all scorers with 19 points on five baskets and nine of 13 from the line. Savoie had 15, Pavey and Borton 12 and 11 respectively for the Falcons. Deery took charge of the Eagles after Kime fouled out and ended the game with 18 points, all from the floor. Kime and Matthews had 15 each and Mortell reached double figures with 10. Glenn had no seniors on their tourney roster after the injury a few weeks ago to Troy Skiles. CMA, winning their first sectional game every at Plymouth, and first overall in 10 years, had only two seniors on their roster.
