Falcons Fall In Two Ovortlmos In Soctlonal Tourney The John Glenn Falcons ended the 1985-86 basketball campaign on Friday night with an heartbreaking double overtime loss in the Plymouth Sectional tourney. The 62-60 decision to Culver Military Academy ended the year with a 7-14 record and the only losing season in the tenure of Gordon Mosson as head coach. The season was expected to be a complete rebuilding season, but after compiling a 7-5 margin one game into the Bi-Coun-ty tourney, to finish 7-14 was very disappointing as almost all of the games were close games until possibly the last few minutes. Many Falcon fans could see the possibility of a reversal of last year's sectional when a favored Glenn team defeated Plymouth in a very emotional and hard game on Friday night to then lose to the LaVlille Lancers in the championship game on Saturday. This year the role was reversed, Glenn and CMA had the break of the draw, with the four teams all given a chance to win the title bumping heads on Wednesday and then the winners again on Friday. As it resulted, the Lancers defended their crown with two exceptional efforts on Wednesday and Friday and didn’t have much trouble disposing of CMA on Saturday. Both teams had several chances to win the game outright. Things looked good for Glenn and gloomy for Culver when the Falcons took a four point lead. 54-50 with 17 seconds left in regulation time and Sam Borton on the free throw line after hitting his first attempt. He missed the second and the Eagles took the ball right down floor and Bland Matthews put a missed CMA shot back in for a rebound basket and the Eagles quickly called a timeout. With :08 showing and a lot of pressure, the inbounds pass found the Falcons moving toward the pass and stepping on the line, giving the ball back to Culver with seven seconds now left. The inbounds pass to Todd Deery was returned to Matthews on the baseline about 13 feet out and he flipped up a jumper that went through cleanly as the clock ticked from :03 to :02 and Glenn got a timeout. After the timeout, a halfcourt desperation shot by Wes Pavey missed and the crowd settled back for an overtime period. In the three minute extra period, the Falcons got the ball and kept the ball on the outside, not really forcing any action and the Eagles were content to set back and wait. However, after a minute and 20 seconds had passed, Deery broke from the middle of the zone to intercept a pass out front and drove for an uncontested lay-in and a 56-54 lead. Pavey came right back with a medium length baseline jumper as the time read 1:15. After the inbounds, CMA was unable to get the ball across the time line in 10 seconds and Glenn had the ball again, but was unable to score and the last frantic seconds found the Eagles really blowing a chance when an intercepted pass with about five seconds left gave Tom Mortell a break away, but not knowing how much time was left he threw up a very poor attempt with about three ticks left (continued on Page 5)
