Falcons Hold Off Westville For 6 Win Saturday The John Glenn Falcons pulled above the .500 mark Saturday night in their final tune-up game before the Bi-County Tourney as they used good first and third quarters to hold off a very improved Westville team from the one Glenn drubbed last year when they were winless. The victory boosted the Falcons to 6-5 on the season and Westville slipped to 2-6. but gave the Falcons plenty to think about throughout the course of the game. It was the friendly free throw line that made the difference in this game as the visiting Blackhawks outscored Glenn from the floor 50-46. but the Falcons' 23 out of 33 charity tosses easily topped the 13 in only 18 attempts by the visitors. In fact, in the crucial final quarter, Glenn hit only two baskets, but 11 out of 16 charity tosses to put the game away. hawks 19-13 in both the first and third periods to get the lead they never lost. However, with Westville not giving up at all, they topped the Falcons in both the second and fourth quarters. It ended up a 69-63 victory for the home team. Roger Spier and Chris Savoie sparked the Falcons to their initial 19-13 quarter lead as Spier tossed in eight points, including four from the free throw line, and Savoie had three baskets as the Falcons grabbed the early lead. The visitors were steady in the rest of the first half and edged Glenn 18-16 in the second stanza, but the Falcons led by four, 35-31 at the main intermission. Spier had upped his total to 12 by halftime, Savoie had eight and Wes Pavey 7. Albers had 11 to pace the Blackhawks. Glenn pulled to a 10 point lead in the third period. Again they outscored their guests 19-13 as Pavey got the hot hand and poured in 11 third quarter points. Spier added six more to his total, four from the line, as the Falcons moved to a 54-44 third quarter margin. The Blackhawks didn’t quit, but their efforts to come from behind sent the Falcons to the free throw line too many times in the last quarter. With only two baskets, Glenn held on from the line hitting 11 one-pointers in the stretch period to move on to the six point margin of victory. Spier and Pavey each ended the night with 21 and Savoie had his biggest offensive night collecting 16 for Glenn. Troy Skiles, who has had the hot hand since the holiday break, hit nine and Brian Ruff had Glenn’s other two points. Albers
matched the game-leading 21 for the losers with Mathias chipping in with 16. Glenn Bees Win Easily The Glenn B-Team also moved over the .500 mark with an easy 35-22 victory over the Westville reserves. (Box score elsewhere.)
