LEGAL NOTICE JANUARY 2, 1986 SUBJECT: VIOLATION OF BACTERIOLOGICAL MAXIMUM CONTAMINANT LEVEL PUBLIC NOTIFICATION The Walkerton Water Department water supply failed to comply with the federal drinking water standard for coliform bacteria for the month of November. 1985. The coliform organism is used as an indicator of the microbiological quality of drinking water. The presence of coliforms indicates possible contamination of the water by disease causing organisms. Section 141.14 of the National Interim Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NIPDWR) specifies that no more than 10 percent of the sample portions from any month may be positive. Sample results from the Walkerton water system indicate that 25 percent of the total tubes innoculated were positive for the month of November. 1985. The Walkerton Water Department sends a weekly supply to the Indiana State Board of Health (ISBH) for testing. The ISBH then divides the sample into 5 different portions, and the water is then tested. The Walkerton Water Department sent 4 samples to the ISBH in November, and they divided them into 5 portions each. I he state then had 20 different portions for the month of November. Os the samples sent in by the Walkerton Water Department in November, 5 of the 20 portions tested were positive, or 25 percent. Since we exceeded the maximum of 10 percent we were in violation. The 5 portions that were positive were from the sample the Walkerton Water Department took on November 12, 1985. All samples sent in before, and after November 12, 1985 came back negative. Since the only samples in question are the ones from November 12, 1985, this leads us to believe that it was a sampling error. A sample can be contaminated by foreign matter falling into the sample bottle, or simply by touching the lip of the bottle. The test results were positive for the November 12th sample, but this does not mean the water supply is contaminated. In order to comply with the National Interim Primary Drinking Water Regulation, we are issuing this public notice. If anyone has any questions, please contact Mr. Marvin Williams at 586-3613 during normal business hours.
