Shot At Buzzer Wins 3-overtlme Game For Falcons
You can’t plan a more exciting finish to a basketball game, high school, college, pro. or what have you, than a desparation shot at the buzzer to win a ballgame. And that was exactly the case Saturdaynight when two old rivals, the John Glenn Falcons and the OregonDavis Bobcats met on the Glenn floor for their annual season meeting. Add to the heroics the fact that this was a triple overtime game with the home team winning, and you have found the untimate in thrills in a basketball game. These two teams have enjoyed a good rivalry for some years now. once in a while one team seems to dominate for a year or two. but for the most part it has been quite a match-up. And who can forget the exciting double overtime victory the Falcons recorded over the Bobcats in the final game of the 1983 Bi-County tourney when Dennis Cooper's half court shot forced the extra action, only to have Glenn win 59-58 in the second overtime. In games like this it is often said it is too bad someone has to lose, and that might have been the case again Saturday night. Both teams are young and basically inexperienced. The quality seen in many of the match-ups might not be there yet, but this contest featured the makings of two teams to be heard from, especially as they mature this year and in the future. The 68-66 victory gave the Falcons their second win in two nights and evened their record at 2-2 for the season. The loss ironically enough, was the Bobcats second in two nights after they had opened the season with three wins in a row before this game. With the score tied at 66 all after 40 minutes and about 59 seconds of time played, it all boiled down to an approximate 25 footer by junior Wes Pavey for Glenn that was in the air when the buzzer sounded and in the net just an instant after to end the marathon see-saw battle. The two teams were tied at 56 all after regulation time, 58 and 60 after the first two overtimes before the scoring loosened up a little in the third overtime only to have them tied with time running out setting up the final basket. As is always the case in a game such as this, both teams had their chances earlier, but looking back means very little once the decision is settled. The game found the two teams each having their moments and individual stars early in the game. The visitors, with their young freshmen "twin towers” of Matt Joseph and George Smalley , had a size advantage on the Falcons and did manage to jump ahead in the early going. It was good balance with Joseph leading the way wiui six points, followed by four. four, three and two points from the other Bobcats to take the 19-15 first period lead with Roger Spier heading the Falcon attack with seven points. The Falcons did come back to dominate the plav in the second period as they controlled the pace and were able to cope with the pressure defense of the Bobcats This was the biggest plus for Glenn along with the outstanding of (continued on page 12)
