JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES The Board of Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met on November 5, 1985, at John Glenn High School. The meeting convened at 8:30 p.m. with all members present. The superintendent and 12 observers were also present at the meeting. Following a motion by Mr. Stull, seconded by Mr. Peddycord, the Board voted unanimously to approve the minutes of the October 1. 1985. meeting. Following a motion by Mrs. Manuel, seconded by Mr. Ludwig, the Board voted unanimously to approve claims number 1.494 through 1.703 as presented. The superintendent noted that claims from Sollitt Construction Company and Slatile Roofing completed payment on the summer re-roofing project at John Glenn High School and North Liberty School. All documents of warranty and completion of the project have been received and recorded. OLD BUSINESS: A. Resolution For Temporary Loan: The superintendent explained that a $350,000 lease rental payment is due on December 8 and that the Corporation would not receive final distribution of tax monies until December 31. therefore the need for the short term loan. Following a motion by Mr. Peddycord. seconded by Mr. Hostetler, the Board voted unanimously to approve a resolution for a temporary loan in the amount of $300,000 for the purpose of covering cash flow in the debt service fund. NEW BUSINESS. A. Guidance Report — Mrs. Kunze. John Glenn High School Director of Guidance: 1. John Glenn High School Fol-low-Up Study of the Class of 1985: Mrs. Kunze presented a written and oral report to the Board regarding the follow-up of the class of 1985. She noted that 46% of the class are currently enrolled in postsecondary institutions of educa tion, 48% are currently employed or in the military, and that 6% are currently unemployed. She explained that this survey is conducted each fall by telephone, therefore insuring 100% response. 2. SAT Scores: Mrs. Kunze also reported on the 1984-85 Scholastic Aptitude Test Scores at John Glenn High School as compared to state and national averages. Scores are as follows: John Glenn High School verbal scores equals 422, math equals 450; the Indiana state verbal score is 415, math is 460; the national verbal average score is 431, math is 475. Mrs. Kunze also compared John Glenn High School scores to other local high schools. These are as follows: Bremen verbal score is 417, math is 466; Oregon-Davis verbal score is 391, math is 418; LaVille verbal score is 443, math is 454. 3. SADD Chapter: Mrs. Kunze also reported that a Students Against Drunk Driving Chapter has been established at John Glenn High School. She explained that the essential purpose of the SADD chapter is to eliminate the drunk driver and save lives, to conduct community alcohol awareness programs. to alert and inform students of the dangers of alcohol and driving. and to organize a peer counseling program to help students who may have concerns about alcohol. This SADD chapter was student initiated and is sponsored by Mrs. Kunze. B. Appointments: Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mrs. Manuel, the Board voted unanimously to make the following extra-curricular appointments: 1. Gale Jackson. Walkerton Elementary Girls Sports. 2. Patty Kennedy. John Glenn Sunshine Society Sponsor. 3. Melanie Stallings. John Glenn
High School Assistant Girls Basketball coach. C. Parent Rquest: Following a motion by Mrs. Manuel, seconded by Mr. Peddycord, the Board voted unanimously to grant a request to Mrs. Erma Flora for her daughter, Becky, an eighth grader at North Liberty School to continue attending at North Liberty School even though the family has moved to Lincoln Township. Dr. Smith noted that it has been the past practice of the Board to allow such requests for the remainder of the school year. D. Administrative Request: The superintendent presented a first reading to establish the administrative position of Elementary/ Mddle School Athletic Director. Dr. Smith explained that many of the duties covered are currently being done on a voluntary basis by a staff member and that the administration wished to formalize these duties and therefore felt that they should be paid by stipend. Additionally, the position should entail evaluation of athletic personnel with the power to recommend retention or dismissal. Mr. Peddycord requested that an average estimate of hours per week be compiled. Shirley Ross, president of the John Glenn Education Association, questioned whether or not the position would have to be removed from the teacher bargaining unit even though it is within the power of the Board to do so. Dr. Smith stated that both items will be researched and this issue brought back to the Board later. E. Conference Requests: Following a motion by Mr. Peddycord. seconded by Mr. Stull, the Board voted unanimously to approve the following conference requests: I. Jana Burkholder and Tim Davis. Mr. Millar stated that he particularly appreciated the narrative form that is used by some staff members to report their conferences, as compared to an outline form. He particularly cared for what parts of the conferences would be particularly useful to the staff members in our Corporation. Dr. Smith requested that the building principals and Miss Ross of the John Glenn Education Association pass on that information to staff members. G. Textbook Rental Collection — October 15. 1985: The superintendent submitted a report to the Board showing that 62% of textbook rental collection had been made as of October 15, 1985. This was comprised of the following figures per building: Walkerton Elementary School, 64%; North Liberty School, 67%; Urey Middle School. 54%; John Glenn High School, 62%. Os a total of $57,054.00 to be collected, at this time $35,274.80 has been collected. H. Financial Statement — September. 1985: The superintendent stated that appropriation balances were normal for this time of year. I. Budget Hearing Announced: The superintendent announced that the State Board of Tax Commissioners Hearing on the John Glenn School Corporation 1986 Budget will be held at 1:30 p.m. on November 20, 1985 at the CountyCity Building in South Bend. This is a public meeting at which any and all individuals are welcome. J. GED Test Certificate: Following a motion by Mrs. Beem. seconded by Mrs. Manuel, the Board voted unanimously to grant a General Educational Development Certificate to Edna Y. (Robinson) Kranneburg. K. Others: 1. Following a motion by Mrs. Manuel, seconded by Mr. Hostetler, the Board voted unanimously to approve a lease rental agreement with the North Liberty Church of the Brethren that will allow the church to use a small strip of land for a driveway from School Drive to Lafayette Street near North Liberty School. 2. Following a motion by Mrs. Beem, seconded by Mr. Stull, the Board voted unanimously to grant a request by Vera Tiani, sponsor of the Urey Voyager Club, to hold an overnight camp trip at Potato Creek State Park on November 16 and 17, 1985. 3. Mr. Millar read a letter from Mr. Hollis Hughes, president of the South Bend Community School Corporation Board of Trustees, which refused Mr. Millar’s request for an apology for remarks made concerning the John Glenn School

Board. 4. Mr. Shuler, principal at John Glenn High School, announced that John Glenn High School and North Liberty School w ill host the Hoosier Spell Bowl on Thursday, November 14, 1985. This event is to encourage academic excellence among students throughout not only John Glenn, but all school corporations. There is no charge. The event will start at 7:00 p.m at the high school and 7:30 p m. at the North Liberty School. The faculty sponsor at John Gjenn High School is Miss Shirley Ross, the faculty sponsor at North Liberty School is Mrs. Jan Hayes. 5. Mr. Shuler also announced that the third week of November is American Education Week and that he invites the Board to tour John Glenn High School during that time. 6. Mr. Stull stated that he wished to commend Mr. Shuler and Mr. Kaufman for their work on the Hoosier Spell Bowl. NEXT MEETING DATES: The Board will meet in executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel and consideration of appointment to a public office (South Bend Library Board) on Saturday. November 16. 1985. at 8:00 a.m. in the library of John Glenn High School. The Board will meet in regular session on Tuesday, November 19, 1985. at 7:30 p.m. in the library of North Liberty School. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Board, following a motion by Mr. Ludwig, seconded by Mr. Peddycord. the Board voted six to zero to adjourn at 10:05 p.m. R.E.A.L.
