The Family of Gifford Garver GLENN TOPS NEW PRAIRIE IN RAIN FRIDAY 22-13 John Glenn football coach Dennis Rippy may want to change the lohn Glenn school song to “Singmg In The Rain” after the John Glenn Falcons racked up their third straight victory in rain Friday night and evened their regular season record at 4-4. The win gave the f alcons a .500 season and also outr ight third place in the Northern State Conference. The win over New Prairie on the Cougars field w as the final action before hosting Rochester in the sectional this f riday night. Glenn finished conference play 4-2 behind LaVille and Jimtown, breaking a tie for third with New Prairie with the win. •he Cougars ended the regular season 3-5 and 3-3 in conference
play. The Falcons kicked off and held, forcing the Cougars to punt. Glenn failed to make a first down, and punted back, but New Prairie promptly punted again after neither team could get going on the already wet field. On their second possession, losing yardage on the two long punts by New Prairie’s Terry Wind, Glenn started at their own 14 yard line. On first down Wes Pavey hit Dave Rupel with a pass that ended up a 41 yard gainer. A couple of hits into the line by Mike Banner and Dave Searfoss gave Glenn another first down before Searfoss was caught for a 3 yard loss and an incomplete pass made it third and 13 at the 38. Banner then took the ball around his left end. turned the corner and tightroped his way down the sideline into the end zone for a 38 yard touchdown scamper. Rupel kicked the point and Glenn led 7-0 with 1:52 left in the first period. The 86 yard drive took just six plays with the two big plays on each end of the drive. The teams exchanged punts once again as both punters were getting good yardage as the deep men were reluctant to try and field the wet ball on the bad field. However, when New Prairie was set to punt again, this time the elements entered in and a bad kick resulted with the ball hitting a Cougar player just 13 yards past the line of scrimmage. This gave Glenn a first and 10 at the New Prairie 33. Banner hit for 2, Pavey threw incomplete and after a 5 yard walkoff against the Cougars for encroachment, Banner was nailed for a 4 yard loss making it fourth and 7 from the 30. Pavey then hit Brian Groves with a short sideline pass, who immediately lateraled to a trailing Banner going full speed and he ran the ball in for the touchdown. Rupel was again true with his kick and it was 14-0 with 5:56 left in the first half. The Cougars then mounted a mini threat as they picked up their initial first downs of the night on the next drive. They moved from their own 41 after the kickoff return to the Falcon 32 before a fumble was covered by Sam Borton to stop the drive. Glenn then ran three plays and punted the ball away, ending the first half. The second half found the weather continually making the field worse. Glenn received, but a fumble on a pass attempt lost 11 yards and the ball with the Cougars taking over at the Glenn 38. However the Falcons held and took over on downs. Glenn moved for one first down before another long punt by Banner backed the Cougars deep in their own territory, only to have a yellow flag tack 15 yards on the end of the punt for a very questionable 15 yards to help the field position. On first down, a halfback pass from Joe Tayler to Todd Jarka, plus some open field running picked up 39 big yards. On the next play, a no gainer, another yellow flag came out and another 15 marched off. Then a five yard loss on a run. a five yard completion on a short pass and a touchdown strike from Dave Washbum to Taylor put New Prairie on the board. A good kick by Doug Curn, made it 14-7, the Cougars were right back in the ball game with 1:20 left in the third quarter.
Conditions continued to deteriorate and the play showed it. The Falcons punted the ball away but New Paririe, after gaining one first down, had a bad snap on a punt attempt forcing the punter to run and he was creamed for a big loss giving Glenn the ball back at the New Prairie 43. Searfoss picked up two, Banner none and then on third down Banner was able to get to the right side of the field and turn the corner where the footing was better and he raced apparently into the end zone but the trailing official called the play dead at the one yard line. From there Pavey just followed his line in for the score and on the extra point, a fake kick found Pavey almost walking in as the defense looked for a pitchout to the trailing Rupel that left Pavey wide open. The two point conversion gave Glenn an apparent safe 22-7 lead with 6:20 left in the game. The weather affected the play very much from here on out. New Paririe turned the ball over on downs, the Falcons fumbled it back and then Pavey picked of a Washburn pass. Glenn, trying to run out the clock in what was now a downpour, faced a fourth and long from their own 32 with time under a half minute when coach Rippy called for Banner to run the ball around to kill time and then take a safety so a safe punt could be made. However, Banner either lost track of where he was or didn’t understand he was to run out of the end zone and ended up getting tackled on the 3 yard line, giving New Paririe the ball with a few seconds remaining. On the first play Gino Klute bulled in for the score. A two point conversion try got stuck in the mud and after the next almost kickoff in the sloppy middle of the field, Glenn was able to kill the clock and take home a 22-13 win. The game was basically a defensive effort with just a few plays on offense making the scoring opportunities. Under the condidtions both teams were limited in play selection. Banner ended the night with 64 yards on 16 carries which included the big 29 yard loss trying to kill the clock late in the game. He scored two touchdowns to easily lead the conference in scoring for the year.
