JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES The Board of Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met on September 3, 1985, at the North Liberty School. The meeting convened at 7:30 p.m. with Mrs. Beem, Mr. Hostetler, Mr. Ludwig, Mrs. Manuel, Mr. Millar and Mr. Peddycord in attendance. The superintendent and 11 observers were also present at the meeting. Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mr. Ludwig, the Board voted six to zero to approve the minutes of the August 29, 1985 meeting. Following a motion by Mr. Peddycord, seconded by Mrs. Manuel, the Board voted six to zero to approve claims number 1,168 through 1,327 as presented. OLD BUSINESS. A. ISBA Fall Conference Delegate: Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mrs. Beem, the Board voted six to zero to designate board president William Millar as delegate tc the Indiana School Boards Fall Conerence on October 7 and 8. Other members of the Board who will be attending are to contact the Corporation office so that reservations may be made. B. Municipal Finance Corporation: Following a motion by Mr. Peddycord, seconded by Mrs. Beem, the Board voted six to zero to defer the decision to a later meeting on Municipal Finance Corporation’s request for an agreement regarding the School Additions Building Corporation — Polk-Lincoln-Johnson . The superintendent explained that it was his understanding that the original intent of this agreement was to resolve the differences arising from a dispute with Penco Corporation and Interior Finishes Corporation during the North Liberty School/John Glenn High School building projects. However, upon advice of legal counsel, it is understood that this agreement absolves only Municipal Finance Corporation of any responsibilities. NEW BUSINESS A. tinger, guidance department counselor at John Glenn High School, submitted a written report to the Board concerning evaluation of the department by 1985 seniors. He explained that comments on this evaluation were very similar to those of the class of 1984 and that the guidance department had assessed these comments and were making changes in their program in response to those comments. B. Resignation: Following a motion by Mr. Peddycord, seconded by Mr. Ludwig, the Board voted six to zero to accept the resignation of Mr. Scot Hoilenbaugh as assistant high school track coach. The superintendent explained that Mr. Hoilenbaugh had taken this position last year on a short term basis and that the high school principal is currently seeking a replacement. C. Preliminary Enrollment Per Building: The superintendent submitted a report to the Board showing enrollment per building by grade level. The net change in enrollments at this time as compared to last year at this time are as follows: John Glenn High School, plus 10; North Liberty Middle School, minus 8 Urey Middle School, minus 18; North Liberty Elementary School, minus 6; and Walkerton Elementary School, plus 37. The net change in enrollment at this time compared to last year is plus 15. The official enrollment for the 1985-86 school year will be taken on Friday, September 13. D. Recoginitions: Following a motion by Mr. Ludwig, seconded by Mrs. Manuel, the Board voted six to zero to recognize the following for their contributions to the school community: 1. John Glenn High School Boys Northern States Conference 198485 All Sports Trophy. 2. John Glenn High School Girls Northern States Conference 1984-85 All Sports Trophy. 3. Mr. Don Blad, Immediate Past President of John Glenn School Corporation Band Boosters, for leadership and donation of equipment to the band program. 4. John Glenn High School Band — Blueberry Festival, Labor Day Parade, 1985, Ist among nine bands; best of show among all
parade entries. E. Conference Requests: Following a motion by Mrs. Beem, seconded by Mrs. Manuel, the Board voted six to zero to grant the following conference requests: 1. Pam Pearish, John Glenn High School, to attend Chemical Awareness Workshop, Columbia City, September 18, 1985, estimated cost $42. 2. Larry Taylor, Nancy Hindman — Ball State Business Conference, September 27, 1985, estimated cost SBS. 3. John Arnett, ISSA Assistant Principal’s Conference, Indianapolis, September 25-26, 1985, estimated cost $l5O. F. GED Certificate: Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mrs. Beem, the Board voted six to zero award a General Educational Development Certificate to David Duane Bollhoefer. G. Others: 1. Growing Healthy Program: The superintendent distributed a Growing Health brochure which identifies the John Glenn School Corporation as one of 18 corporations in the state of Indiana with this program which is sponsored by the American Lung Associaton. Mrs. Lightfoot, principal of Walkerton Elementary School, and Mr. Kaufman, principal of North Liberty Elementary School, explained that we are one of only four schools that has advanced the program through the fourth grade and that they have hopes that it will be continued into grades five, six and seven in the future. 2. North Liberty Church of the Brethren Request for Lease: Following a motion by Mrs. Manuel, seconded by Mr. Ludwig, the Board voted six to zero to authorize the Corporation attorney to draw up a one-year renewable lease, at SI.OO per year, that will allow the church to use a small strip of land owned by the School Corporation for a new driveway. The lease is to include a clause absolving the Corporation of responsibility in any liability arising from the use of this land. 3. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to come before the Board, following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mr. Ludwig, the Board voted six to zero to adjourn at 8:25 p.m. FALL EXERCISE CLASSES The Autumn Fitness Exercise Gasses, under the direction of the Health and Lifestyle Center of Memorial Hospital, will be held every Monday, beginning September 16 with a 10:00 a.m. class at the United Methodist Church in Lakeville and a 7:00 p.m. class at the North Liberty school gym. Every Wednesday, beginning September 18, classes will be held at 10:00 a.m. again at the United Methodist Church in Lakeville and at 7:00 p.m. at the Walkerton Elementary school gym. These exercise-to-music classes are designed for the beginning student with everyone encouraged to exercise at their own pace. To look good on the outside and feel good on the inside, a person needs to stretch out, tone up, and pump the heart. The class consists of stretching warm ups, muscular conditioning, aerobics and cool down stretching. All exercises are nicely fit to music. Sue Klinedinst, a certified fitness instructor, will lead the, classes. Gasses are open to all ages. Participants are asked to bring a mat or rug for the floor work, a yard stick and 3 pound weights. HOPE CIRCLE MEETS The Hope Circle of the Walkerton United Methodist Church met on Monday, September 9, at the home of Mrs. John Wathen, with 10 members present. Mrs. Leigh Roy Hahn gave the prayer before the refreshments were served. Many cards were signed for the love members and those in the hospital. The circle presented Mr. and Mrs. Walter Smith with a gift for their 50th wedding anniversary as Mrs. Smith is a member of the circle. The secretary, Mrs. Morris Searfoss, gave her report as did the treasurer, Mrs. Elizabeth Hess. A new supply of napkins have arrived and sell for SI.OO a package. Mrs. Wathen, chairman, conducted the business meeting. Mrs. Hahn gave the devotions using as her theme, prayer power. Mrs. John McCombs gave the lesson on this is the day the Lord has made, let us be thankful. Dates to remember include September 26, District meeting at Osceola; October 6 to 13, Mission Saturation Week with missionaries visiting us through the week and October 17, general meeting with Mrs. Jim Haney, chairman of the program.
