MUCH NEEDED EXTRAS Now that school is again underway for the next nine months or so, also starts a lot of extra curricular activities. These activities, often criticized by many, are definitely a part of going to school. They may not help in the basics of reading, writing or arithmetic, but are just as important in many ways as the time spent in the classrooms. Os course when you talk extra curricular activities, athletics and music are the two that come to mind the quickest. However, there are many more activities that will take the time and efforts of more students than one may think. And they, as well as the fooball, basketball, volleyball teams, etc., are important to those participating in them. It takes more than strict bookwork to make school both enjoyable and wellrounded programs for the children. It is true a lot of time and money is spent in many of the extra curricular activities. However, if these “extras” install that extra incentive in the student, make their schooling an enjoyable experience instead of a battle, and certainly encourage some to remain in school that otherwise would not, then they are well worth every penny spent. This Friday night the Glenn football team will open its home season. This year there are only four home games, but consider this Friday between the players, the band who will perform, the cheerleaders, etc., you have approximately one out of every five students directly involved on that particular night. Add to that the many more activities throughout the year, and one can easily see why this definitely is a “part of their education” as they go through their school years. It is strictly for the kids themselves.

Roscoe and Ruth Smeltzer To Parents Os John Glenn High School If you have a student at John Glenn High School who may not be making the progress toward excellence you have reason to expect, this letter is directed to you. In my professional judgment, you have an excellent educational plant with more than your fair share of excellent and concerned teachers doing what they can to equip your sons and daughters with the tools and skills and attitudes they will need to survive. These teachers are ably supported by a staff of trained men and women who administer the board’s policies and who are led by an excellent superintendent. Your children have an opportunity to take an education second to none. But making use of that opportunity will be up to your children — through you and with you. Opportunity seems only to knock. The rest is up to the student. One stubborn fact about the learning process must be made crystal clear to all parents; no one, but no one, can give your child an education. There is no such thing as compulsory education; there is only complusory attendance. Every step in his education must be taken by the student by and for himself. Learning is a personal matter. The teacher is to the child as the gardener is to the plant. The gardener can attend to the essential needs — the sunshine, the water, the fertilizer. But the plant must do its own growing. John Glenn High School stands ready and able to provide the encouraging environment that will help your children to grow. But unless they are motivated and 1 stimulated and proded into the pursuit of excellence, the atmosphere will not really help, no matter how dedicated and capable may be our teachers, the administrators, or the superintendent. The ultimate responsibility for learning rests with the student. It can be a heavy burden; he may choose to take it or leave it. All students need the regular and continued efforts of caring parents to stand behind and beside each student throughout their learning years. If you as parents choose not to find the time and the patience to prompt your child to carry on, you will be wasting my time and your tax dollar. We learn best by examples. ( Show your children that you value education and they will demonstrate their own high beliefs and values of education. Communicate with your student’s teachers; find out how you can support the school’s work. Make education a family concern and never forget to ^praise their accomplishments. ■ With your support, your sons and daughters will undertake almost , anything, even the hard work of learning! Good luck to you and keep striving for higher expectations from your students. We will be doing the same at John Glenn High School —1 can guarantee it!
