JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES The Board of Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met on August 6, 1985. in the library of John Glenn High School. The meeting convened at 7:35 p.m. with Mrs. Beem, Mr. Hostetler. Mr. Ludwig. Mr. Millar. Mr. Ped dycord and Mr. Stull in attendance. The superintendent and one observer were also present at the meeting. Following a motion by Mrs. Beem. seconded by Mr. Stull, the Board voted six to zero to approve the minutes of the July 23. 1985 meeting. Following a motion by Mr. Ludwig. seconded by Mr. Stull, the Board voted six to zero to approve the claims numbered 1.076 through 1.167 as presented. OLD BUSINESS A. Bus Bids — Award Contracts: Following a motion by Mr. Stull, seconded by Mrs. Beem, the Board voted six to zero to purchase two Chevrolet chassis with standard transmission from MahoneyMann Chevrolet Oldsmobile of Walkerton, and to purchase two Superior bus bodies from Leonard Supply Company of Silver Lake. Indiana. The combined purchase price of each unit is $25,873.45. B. 1986 Budget Advertisement: Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mr. Ludwig, the Board voted six to zero to authorize the superintendent to advertise the following budget and tax rate figures: General Fund, $3,852,100, $2.3041. Debt Service Fund, $1,098,996; $1.8533. Transportation Fund, $338,000; $0.5867. s Cumulative Building Fund, $0.25. Estimated Assessed Valuation. $46,500,000. The total of the advertised tax rate is $4.9941 per SIOO of assessed valuation. These calculations are based upon a realistic set of budget provisions with a conservative estimation of assessed valuation for the School Corporation; thus, it is planned by the Board that when the true assessed valuation figure is known that the tax rates will be reduced at the November tax hear-

mg. NEW BUSINESS A. Gifted and Talented Expansion Grant: The superintendent noted that the School Corporation has been notified of the award of a SIO,OOO Gifted and Talented Expansion Grant from the Indiana Department of Education. This is the third consecutive year that the School Corporation has been awarded a gifted and talented grant. Following a motion by Mr. Peddycord, seconded by Mrs. Beem. the Board voted six to zero to commend the efforts of Marilyn Lightfoot, principal of Walkerton Elementary School; Judy New, Gifted and Talented Coordinator of Walkerton Elementary School; and Pat Sriver, Gifted and Talented Coordinator of North Liberty Elementary School, in their preparation of the gifted and talented grant applications. B. Establish 1985-86 Textbook Rental: Following a motion by Mrs. Beem, seconded by Mr. Hostetler, the Board voted six to zero to accept the proposed textbook rates as presented by the administration. A copy of these rates and comparison with the 1984-85 rates are attached to and a part of these minutes. The superintendent stated that those rates as adopted represent an overall decrease of 20% in the prekindergarten through eighth grade levels as compared to the 1984-85 textbook rental areas. Additionally. the high school rates which are calculated on a per class basis, represents an overall decrease of 16% as compared to the 1984-85 textbook rental rates. C. Transfer Tuition Requests: Following a motion by Mr. Stull, seconded by Mr. Ludwig, the Board voted six to zero to approve the following parent requests to pay transfer tuition: 1. Dan and Carol Taylor for son, Shad, to attend North Liberty School. 2. Brent and Mary Kaufman for daughter, Stacy, to attend Walkerton Elementary School. 3. Mrs. Elaine Vandal! for daughter. Emily, to attend Walkerton Elementary School. D. Resignations: Following a motion by Mr. Peddycord, seconded by Mrs. Beem, the Board voted six to zero to accept the following resignations: 1. Kristen A. Gordon, Spanish, John Glenn High School.
2. Gayle Anderson, Home Economics. Urey Middle School. 3. Donald L. Zeller. Principal, John Glenn High School. E. Appointments: Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mrs. Beem, the Board voted six to zero to make the following appointments: 1. Enrico H. Mordini. Spanish Class Sponsor, Foreign Language Department Head. 2. Andrew Stegemiller, Secondary Science. F. Conference Reports: The Board accepted written conference reports from the following individuals: I. Nancy Huff. Pam Walz, Emily Ringenberg, Gale Dodge. Cyndy Williams — Gesell Advanced Training Workship. Julv 25-26. 1985. 2. Brent Kaufman and Jan Hayes, North Central Association Workshop, July 25-26, 1985. G. Letter of Appreciation: The Board was pleased to accept a letter of appreciation from Mrs. Josie Snell of Cub Scout Pack 293 thanking the Board for allowing the pack to use a school corporation bus and the services of a School Corporation driver to attend activities in Plymouth this summer. H. Others: 1. Following a motion by Mr. Stull, seconded by Mrs. Beem, the Board voted six to zero to reappoint Mary Ellen Hission, Librarian of John Glenn High School, to the Area Library Services Authority Region 2 Board of Directors. 2. Following a motion by Mr. Ludwig, seconded by Mr. Peddycord, the Board voted six to zero to award a General Educational Development Certificate to David M. Diaz. 3. Members of the Board commented upon the excellent editorial in the most recent IndependentNews regarding the long-range planning study and local efforts to make improvements in our School Corporation. Members wish to thank Mr. Urbin for his efforts in publishing the study. 4. Following a motion by Mr. Peddycord, seconded by Mrs. Beem, the Board voted six to zero to grant the request of the South Bend Library Board to continue parking the bookmobile at the south end of the North Liberty School parking lot as it has been located this summer. The Board will meet in a short public special session on August 13. 1985, in the library of John Glenn High School at 7:00 p.m. for the purpose of acting upon recommendations of appointment to the Corporation staff, if necessary. Immediately following the special public meeting the Board will meet in executive session for the purpose of conducting the evaluation of the superintendent. The Board will meet in regular session on August 20, 1985, in the library of John Glenn High School at 7:30 p.m. The Board will also conduct a public hearing on the proposed 1986 School Corporation Budget, as advertised. The Board will meet in special session on August 29, 1985, in the library of John Glenn High School at 7:30 p.m. for the purpose of adopting the 1986 School Corporation Budget. But not all Republican women belong to their clubs, and perhaps would like to share their favorite family recipe or one that has been passed from generations. We need your help. ANNOUNCE PLACEMENT TESTING DATES Placement testing dates for new students intending to register for courses at Ancilla College have been set for Friday, August 16 and Monday, August 19. Testing is required to determine the student’s skill level in various subject areas. Students whose transcripts provide inconclusive evidence as to their capabilities with reading and
