JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met on June 25, 1985 in the library of John Glenn High School. The meeting convened at 7:40 p.m. with Mrs. Beem, Mr. Hostetler. Mr. Ludwig, Mrs. Manuel, Mr. Millar and Mr. Peddycord in attendance. Mr. Stull arrived at 8:15 p.m. The superintendent and 11 observers were also present at the meeting. Following a motion by Mr. Hostetler, seconded by Mr. Ludwig, the Board voted six to zero to approve the minutes of the June 11. 1985. meeting. Following a motion by Mr. Ludwig, seconded by Mrs. Beem. the Board voted six to zero to approve claims 929, 930 and 931 as presented. OLD BUSINESS A. Long Rage Planning Report — Dr. C. William Day, Indiana University: Dr. Day submitted an oral and written report to the Board concerning the grade organization and facilities study that he was commissioned to conduct in the spring of this year. The written report consists of (1) Demographic Data and Projections, (2) Grade Organization Patterns: The State of the Art. (5) Appendices. The report has been taken under advisement by the Board. A copy pf the written report and a transcript of Dr. Day's oral report is available for review at the School Corporation office. The public is strongly encouraged to review this information, the Board will schedule public input meetings shortly following the beginning of the school year. B. Re-Roofing Projects Status Report — Dave Rogers, Sollitt Construction Company: Mr. Rogers reported to the Board that all materials for the re-roofing projects at John Glenn High School and North Liberty School should be on site by July 2, the first working crew will begin on July 8 and a second crew is scheduled to begin the next week. Slatile Roofing has scheduled the projects to be completed in 30 working days which will be prior to the beginning of the school year. NEW BUSINESS A. Walkerton-Lincoln Township Library Appointments: Following a motion by Mr. Ludwig, seconded by Mr. Hostetler, the Board voted seven to zero to appoint Lois Cover and Robert Schaeffer to four year terms on the library board. B. Indiana Department of Education, School Commissions: The superintendent reported to the Board that John Glenn High School, North Liberty School, Urey Middle School and Walkerton Elementary School have been awarded first class commissions by the Indiana Department of Education. C. Appointments: Following a motion by Mr. Millar, seconded by Mrs. Beem. the Board voted seven to zero to make the following staff appointments: 1. Mrs. Chris Lyle, Secondary Mathematics. 2. Mrs. Teresa Hensler, Elementary Teacher. 3. Mrs. Cyndy Williams, North Liberty School Counselor/Elementary Teacher. Mrs. Lyle taught mathematics at Urey Middle School from 1969 to 1976. Mrs. Hensler is new to the School Corporation, but has ap-

proximately five years elementary teaching experience. Mrs. Williams has been art and kindergarten teacher with the School Corporation since 1971. D. 1985-86 Student Handbooks: The Board has deferred action on all four student handbooks to allow more time for study. Passage of the student handbooks will be on the July 9 Board meeting agenda. E. Conference Reports: The Board accepted written conference reports from the following individuals: 1. Jana Burkholder. Cindy Huhnke, Marilyn Lightfoot, Brent Kaufman, “Growing Healthy Curriculum Workshop’’, Ball State University. 2. Brent Kaufman and Don Zeller, “Administrator’s Computing Education Conference”. Indianapolis. 3. Marolyn Millar, Marilyn Wallace and Evelyn Houser, “Hands-On-Training” Workshop, Merrillville. The Board also accepted a written report of conferences attended by John Glenn School Corporation staff, 1984-85. This report indicated that 76 certified and noncertified individuals attended a total of one hundred and three separate conferences during the preceding school year. Mr. Peddycord particularly noted that he wished to thank all of those individuals for the excellent conference reports that they have submitted throughout the school year. They are very interesting, informative and excellent documentation of the value that in-service conferences provide to the individual employees of the School Corporation and the School Corporation as a whole. F. Financial Statement — May, 1985: The superintendent submitted the financial statement to the Board noting that appropriation balances for this time of year are normal as compared to other years. Dr. Smith further noted that there is a need to begin a procedure of utilizing temporary loans to affect necessary cash flow of Corporation funds. He noted that this is due to: (1) The utilization of cumulative building fund balances during the 1984-85 roofing projects, and (2) The lack of an operating balance in the general fund. Mr. Peddycord asked if this was an abnormal situation with regard to other school corporations. tions did utilize temporary loans for cash flow purposes, however, it had not been necessary in the John Glenn Corporation in the recent past. The superintendent will return to the Board with a plan for utilizing temporary loans over the coming six month period. G. Others: 1. South Bend Community School Corporation — Adult Basic Education Agreement: Following a motion by Mr. Millar, seconded by Mrs. Manuel, the Board voted seven to zero to approve an agreement between the South Bend Community School Board and the John Glenn School Corporation School Board concerning the provision of Adult Basic Education services within the John Glenn School Corporation. The Board will meet in regular session on July 9, 1985, at 7:30 p.m. in the library of John Glenn High School, at which time reorgan ization of the Board will occur. Immediately following the regular meeting, an executive session will be held for the purpose of discussing personnel. The Board will also meet in special open session on July 16, 1985, at 7:30 p.m. in the library of John Glenn High School. The purpose of this meeting is to conduct a hearing on the matter of the consideration of cancellation of an indefinite teaching contract. The hearing is being held in special open session at the request of the teacher. There being no further business to come before the Board, following a motion by Mr. Millar, seconded by Mr. Ludwig, the Board voted seven to zero to adjourn at 9:25 p.m. The Board met in executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel following the regular meeting.
