EDITORIALS
IN VERY POOR TASTE We do not like to criticize other publications for almost any reason and certainly are aware that ours could easily enough be criticized also. However, one thing caught our eye recently that certainly didn't set well and felt that the paper in question certained erred in publishing one paragraph that no one would have missed and we feel it did nothing to add to the readership or entertainment of the paper. In this past Sunday’s "South Bend Tribune" political column by Jack Colwell, the "turkey of the year" awards contained one paragraph that was not only in bad taste, but was what we feel a real insult and poor attempt at humor in an area that doesn’t need more adverse and ridiculing statements about the less fortunate and those receiving welfare or aid of one type or another. The paragraph in question reads, and we quote: “Certainly deserving a Turkey of the Year Award for ridiculing a sound proposal is Democratic congressional challenger Mike Barnes. He scoffed at Congressman Jack Hiler’s debate contention that “Saturday night specials," cheap handguns so often used in murder and robbery, ought to be available to the poor because they can’t afford better weapons. Well, a study just out shows poor people are 10 times more likely than those better off to die in accidental shootings. Get guns to all the poor, and the unemployed will decrease. Freeloaders on welfare will be cut down. Barnes failed to realize how cheap guns can bring prosperity." End quote. We feel this excuse for “humor" is not needed. Especially when connected with the editorial pages of the newspaper. If the effort was made to “defend" Congressman Hiler after siding against him in the recent election, and the effort to wipe a little egg off the face was made, this certainly was not the way to do it. There certainly are many more topics that could consume this space that is more fitting to all, the “Tribune", the political himself, Mike Barnes, who ran a good and honest campaign and serves our area as prosecutor, and especially the area people who take the “Tribune". Too often humer and politics do not mix that well . . . ask President Reagan, who thought he was being funny when supposedly warming up for his Saturday morning radio broadcast, found out that his comments about invading the Soviet Union were going over a live microphone. We feel with the economic situation what it is in this area, that certainly an apology should be made by “The Tribune" for publishing such as this. The paper surely would be very careful about running such as this in their “Voice Os The People" section, but did allow their number one political writer to express such a statement. We feel this was very poor judgement on both of their parts. FLY IT RIGHT . . . OR NOT AT ALL! For about two weeks now, which includes the recent “Veteran’s Day" holiday, the Town of Walkerton has been “flying" a tattered, torn and what appears to be at half mast upside down American flag on top of the town hall building. This matter has not been corrected in all this time and certainly is a very sorry sight for all, those passing through town and residents alike. The flag on this pole atop the Town Hall building, is on a pole that does not allow it to be raised and lowered each day, as it once was, but is replaced only with the use of Town equipment to reach the top of the building. However, if it is to be displayed this way, the Town should be able to and plan to replace it when needed, instead of letting it be displayed as it has been for some two weeks. It is not that much of a job to replace it and certainly is in a position to be seen so someone should continually know the condition of the flag. This is not a major factor in running the Town, but this alone does say something to many people . . . and the message is not good. It is surprising that such a disgrace could be allowed to continue this long. We sincerely hope this situation is soon corrected and the future will hold more respect for the flag of our country. We suggest “By it right ... or not at all’’’ L WHEN—
1974 As of January 1, 1975, new legislation will affect our local ambulance service we now have. Due to the required regulations our local service, (including Koontz Lake, Fish Lake, Tyner and Teegarden) now provided by the Nusbaum Hkin Funeral Home, may have to be discontinued due to the lack of concern by our community and due to the high operational expenses. A committee appointed by the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce is looking into immediate action to
be offered for assistance in continuing this service. Your support is needed. Things being looked into include the encouragement of the local service and repair stations to place the vehicle in top priority when in need; to provide several available qualified drivers; to seek those individuals who will be willing to become trained as paramedics to assist in an emergency and to seek financial assistance to meet the requirements to be mandated by January 1978. Named to the Northern State
Conference All-Conference football team from our area were Mike Flaugher, Gordon Hartsell, Matt Clabaugh. all of John Glenn, and Mike Stonebumer, from North Liberty. The PU Band Boosters and students are having a Christmas tree sale, Saturday, November 9. The sale will continue through Thanksgiving weekend. Order your tree now and pick up December 11 at the bank parking lot until December 18. 1969 Vandals broke into the Tyner School last Sunday night and did heavy damage to one classroom and to the cafeteria. Water faucets were turned on in the classroom causing the entire floor to be water covered, bookshelves were upset, papers scattered and reading sets destroyed causing hundreds of dollars in damages. Locks were broken in the cafeteria off the refrigerators and food was scattered around the room. Tape recorders, record players, adding machines and several other pieces of equipment were missing. At the market 16 pounds and up turkeys were selling for 39 cents a pound; center cut pork chops at 89 cents a pound; rib end chops at 79 cents a pound; country style ribs at 79 cents a pound; bacon at 79 cents a pound; smoked sausage at 79 cents a pound; cranberry jello at 39 cents a pound; 50 ounce jar of applesauce at 55 cents; three pound can of Folgers coffee for $1.89; a quart container of cool whip for 49 cents; a half gallon of ice cream for 49 cents; jumbo towels for 29 cents a roll; dozen dinner rolls for 59 cents; 10 pounds of Idaho potatoes for 89 cents; and a dozen tangerines for 59 cents. 1959 The board of directors of the North Liberty Lions Club voted to take over the sponsorship of the Explorer Scouts and the Little League. Committee members assisting on the committee are H. C. Beckwith, Jim Newcomb, Dan Roser, Bob Whitmer, Joe Hamilton Gene Gensinger, Buss Wolfe and Henry Dittman. Even though the Christmas Seals were only mailed out this week, the township chairmen have reported that the first few purchases have already been made. Don't forget to give to this worthwhile cause. Four score and sixteen years ago, November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address. The Indians won last Friday night when they defeated the North Liberty Shamrocks in basketball by a score of 45-31 at the Liberty gym. Donna Owens, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Owens, North Liberty, received a skull fracture and concussion at the back of her head, as well a fractured clavicle Monday evening when she fell from the Owens car while they were returning from Walkerton. In the car with the girl was her mother and Mrs. Clarence Heim. The child was attempting to open the window and instead opened the door which threw her out of the car. The four high school classes are sponsoring a "Canteen” in the cafeteria each noon. Candy bars, soft drinks and fudge bars are being sold. 1934 The large barn on Charles Lemert farm, near Teegarden, was destroyed by fire last Friday night at about 5:30. Fire departments from both Walkerton and LaPaz answered the call for help. The damage was estimated at about $2,500.00. This was partly the same barn which was moved some months ago during a severe wind storm. About 200 residents from North Liberty, Walkerton. Knox, Hamlet, North Judson, San Pierre, Wheat - field, Shelby and Schneider appeared before R. G. Gilbert, chief examiner of the Indiana Public Service Commission at a hearing
conducted in the Circuit Court room. South Bend, Tuesday morning, in protest against the proposed action of the Kankakee division of the New York Central railroad to remove the two remaining passenger and mail trains. Witnesses for the railroad declared that the two trains in question have been operating at a loss of $8,000.00 per year for the past three years. A decision in the matter will be made in the near future. A dust fire, resembling very much a muck fire whithout a blaze, broke out in the B. I. Holser & Co. elevator in Walkerton, Monday night, about seven. Due to the quick action by the Walkerton Fire Department with its chemical wagon, very little damage resulted. VOICE OF THE PEOPLE Desperately Need Manpower The Walkerton Area 4th of July Committee desperately needs manpower! If we do not get more men and women actively involved in this community and area committee now, the area will lose a local tradition. Due to lack of manpower, the 4th of July Committee will no longer be able to provide the 4th of July Parade, fireworks, carnival and/or other 4th of July related activities. Committee members have asked various organizations in the area to become involved, to no avail. We have met with the same results from individuals. We are not in financial problems right now, but if we do not get manpower and more interest in the community we will drop it as of January 1985. This is your community, we would like to hear from vou. Walkerton Area 4th of July Committee, Inc. WALKERTON TOWN COURT NEWS Kathleen M.
