Falcons Drop Offensive Battle To South Central The John Glenn Falcons dropped a 30-20 decision to the South Central Satellites Friday night as the two teams put on a pretty good offensive show for the fans at South Central's field. The Falcons, although never ahead in the game, weren't out of it until a touchdown with 1:41 left in the game by the hosts opened up a 30-14 lead, only to have Glenn come back in the last minute with one of their own. but it was just a little too little too late. The loss dropped Glenn to 2-6 on the season while the victors from LaPorte County have that record just reversed, 6-2. This was a cluster game that meant nothing as Bremen had cluster 50 all sewed up. but this didn’t take anything away from the competition between these two schools. JG Statistics SC 11 First Downs 18 240 Rushing 150 38 Passing 165 10 Passes Attempted 22 3 Passes Completed 12 1 Had Intercepted 3 26 Return Yards 18 2 Punts 1 15% Average Yards 18 5 Fumbles 2 1 Fumbles Lost 2 31 Yards Penalized 0 57 Offensive Plays 60 The two teams started out with both offenses moving the ball, but also both defenses rose to the necessary occasions to stop the other until the Falcons hurt themselves with a key penalty to change the tempo and complection of the game. After the Satellites took the opening kick and gained a couple of first downs. Jim Viscik intercepted Mike Eaton pass to stop the home team at the Glenn 39. A couple of big runs netted Glenn good yardage down to the Satellite 29 yard line before a key fourth down play lost a couple of yards giving South Central the ball back at their own 31. Glenn held and the Satellites punted the ball to Glenn at the Glenn 38. However, a penalty was called on Glenn for roughing the kicker and South Central had the ball first and 10 at the Glenn 49 yard line. It then took seven more plays, 11 in all in the drive, to get the ball into the end zone with Eaton hitting two key passes for 25 and 10 yards in the drive. Eaton finally was able to sneak it in from one yard out and he then hit Curt Wall with a quick pass to make it 8-0 with 1:28 left in the first quarter. Glenn then put on quite a drive of their own. The kick was fielded by an “up" man and an attempted lateral fell on the ground, Glenn recovered at their own IS. However, Mark Cain was running the team and with him in the backfield was Delane Overton and Tracy Workman, and the three of them took turns ripping through the South Central line picking up four first downs along the way getting down to the 21 before a Workman fumble was covered by the Satellites to stop the drive at the 17. However, on the second play, an attempted pitchout to Brian Satoski was bouncing free with a lot of players in the chase but Viscik finally covered the loose and elusive ball m the end zone for a quick Glenn score Cain then ran in the extra points to knot it at 8-8 with 6:08 left in the half. This didn't end the excitement for the first half. The Satellites took the next kickoff from their own 41 and moved steadily down field with a big 32 yard pass the big play on a wounded duck type of pass that could have easily been intercepted by Glenn . . but wasn’t. It took just one more play from the two for Satoski to carry it in the end zone for the score. This time a pass for two points was broken up
and it was 14-9 with 4:04 left in the half. The next series of downs really hurt. Glenn couldn’t gain a first down and was forced to punt with time a big clement. However, a nine yard return on the end of the punt gave South Central first and 10 at their own 39. Eaton went right to work. He hit a 17 yarder on the second play and then two running plays picked up another 14 and another first down. A short completed pass and short run was followed by a bomb down the middle to Monte Clincdaniel, one of Eaton’s two favorite receivers, and it chewed up the remaining 29 yards for the score. Satoski then took a pitchout for an easy scamper in for two points and it was 22-8 w ith just 44 seconds left in the half. This normally wouldn’t mean much, but Cain took the next kickoff at his own 21, reversed his field a couple of times, finally getting around the corner of the onrushing team and broke into the open 79 yards for a score . . . but wait, once again that distinctive yellow flag brought the play back on a clip call. The Falcons then ran out the remainder of the time in the half and still trailed 22-8. It didn't take Glenn long in the second half to tighten the game back up. A short kick was picked up by Viscik while on his knee, so it was first and 10 at the Glenn 36. It took just seven running plays, Cain and Workman carrying three times each and Overton once with Cain breaking the final 40 for the score. However, a run for two points failed but Glenn had pulled back within eight, 22-14 with 9:07 left in the third quarter plus the entire last period to play. The Satellites like the passing game and picked up a couple of first downs with a key 20 pass by Eaton moving the ball deep into Glenn territory before Viscik picked off his second pass of the night and returned the bail 25 yards to Glenn 34. However, on the first play. Cain tried to go deep and it was intercepted by the Satellites as possession changes started coming fast and furious. The Satelittes got one first down and were at the Glenn 23 before a Satoski fumble was covered by David Rupel and once again a quick change of possession turned the game around. However, the Falcons were unable to moved the ball and Mike Banner dropped back to kick only to have the boot blocked and the Satellites had not only stopped Glenn, but had the ball at the Glenn 7 yard line. However, Glenn’s defense rose to the occassion and held them at bay with three straight passes falling incomplete. Glenn moved the bail well away from the goal line. 53 yards in all before turning it back on downs. This drive again was all on the ground as the Falcons were hitting the straight ahead plays good behind some of the best blocking they have had this year. Another turnover kept Glenn in the game after turning the ball over on downs as Cain intercepted an Eaton pass with a diving catch after SC had gained a first down and got inside of Glenn territory. But once again Glenn couldn't sustain a drive and they tried a pass on a trick play out of punt formation that was knocked down to give the host team great field position as time was now a definite factor in the game. On the second play, Satoski broke loose for 28 yards to the 7 yard line and the Satellites then scored the touchdown that broke the game open on fourth and one from the one. This came with 1:41 left in the game and Eaton hit Wall with a two pointer to make it 30-14. Glenn wasn't done however. A humed up offense with both Cam and freshman Willie Hostrawser taking the snaps depending on what type of play was called, resulted in the Falcons moving right dow n the field and Cam hit Darrin Fisher with a 28 yard pass for a
consolation ID with just :02 show - ing on the clock. This ended the action for the night, another game that goes into the loss column with a few breaks possibly allowing it to have gone the other way. Satoski ended the night with 112 yards in 24 carries and Eaton had another good passing night for the winners. Cain ended with 106 yards in 20 carries while Workman and Overton netted 66 and 59 each as in this game against this defense, the run was Glenn’s big play again. This Friday Glenn will visit the very strong Jimtown Jimmies for a 7:30 game at Jimtown. Next Wednesday, it will be the season finale with Glenn traveling to Syracuse to play Wawasee in the final game of the 1984 season and also coach John Hostrawser's last game as Glenn’s coach as he has already announced his plans to retire from football coaching at Glenn.
