FALCON FUMBLES SPARK COUGAR VICTORY 14 - 12 Four second half fumbles by the John Glenn Falcons that were all covered by the visiting New Prairie Cougars made the difference Friday night as the Falcons lost another extremely hard loss 14-12 in their final home game of the 1484 season. The Cougars, rather tame in the first half, came out the second half and simply looked like they wanted the game more than the Falcons did. The hard hitting and hard charging of their linemen turned the play completely around in the last 24 minutes after Glenn had assumed a 12-0 halftime lead. The loss was Glenn's fifth in seven starts this season and although both teams are members of the Northern State Conference, no conference standings are kept in football since the cluster system made schedules a real problem a year ago. The win was the first for the Cougars who definitely play a much stronger schedule being in a cluster with St. Joe, Washington and South Bend Adams. After kicking off to New Prairie, the Falcons held and forced the visitors to punt. Putting the ball in play at their own 38 yard line, Glenn went right to work with a nice sustained drive of 11 plays to cover the 62 yards and draw first blood. Eight rushes, two completed passes and an incomplete pass made up the sustained drive with Mark Cain working at the quarterback position in this game. Cain hit tight end Jim Viscik with a 14 yard pass for the score, making it 6-0 after just 6:44 had passed. David Rupel’s kick was short when a slightly high snap threw the timing off on the spot and kick. Glenn then missed a golden opportunity to add to the lead shortly after. Holding the Cougars once more, the Falcons rushed through hard on a high snap and David Searfoss blocked a Terry Wind punt and Tim Knowlton covered the loose ball at the New Prairie 26 yard line. However, two incomplete passes and a run that gained nothing made it fourth and 10 when Cain pitched out on a lateral to Mike Banner who was going to throw a halfback pass, but the ball bounced free and was covered by the Cougars at the Glenn 35, stopping any threat that might develop on the play. The Falcons again held and forced yet another punt, this time they put the ball in play at their own 34. It was another fine sustained drive, with all the plays on the ground except for one good and one incomplete pass. Picking up four first downs along the way, Banner finally scooted in from seven yards out and it was 12-0 with 8:24 left in the first half. However, after missing the first extra point, coach John Hostrawser had the Falcons go for two and Cain was forced out of bounds on a sweep to his left just before he got to the end zone, result, no good. The two teams traded punts on the next possessions as Glenn's defense was giving the Cougars only three plays and a punt each
time they had the ball. However, after the exchange of punts, New Prairie finally got their initial first down of the night and started a drive at their own 19 that carried for three first downs getting down to the Falcon 33 yard line before a Chris Blake fumble was covered by Chuck Klockow, ending the drive and allowing the Falcons to basically run out the time before punting with just seconds left in the first half. The second half was a different story. The Falcons got the ball on the kickoff and a big break four plays later when they were forced to punt and a roughing the kicker penalty gave Glenn a first down and new life at their own 39 yard line. After a run picked up one. a pass from Rod Snyder to Darrin Fisher picked up another 14 and a first down at the Cougar 45 before the first of four second half fumbles occured that cost Glenn the bailgame. The Cain bobble was covered by Doug Grott and the visitors just had a new outlook on life and intensity which wasn't present in the first half. They made it quick with Blake and fullback Jon Dudeck taking turns running over, around and through the Falcon defense behind a very hard charging line. They were just shoving Glenn backwards in the trenches on every play. Six rushing plays moved the ball to the one yard line before an illegal procedure call pushed the Cougars back to the six. However, on second and goal from the six, Rick Bloode flipped a little pass to Joe Taylor for the score. Brad Feece kicked the extra point and just that quick it was a 12-7 bailgame with 5:16 left in the third quarter. The Falcons fumbled the ball away again when Cain was caught well behind the line of scrimmage on a scrambling situation and lost the ball at the 12 yard line to the Cougars. This time however, the defense rose to the occassion and with a big sack by David Rupel for a 12 yard loss the big play, Glenn took over again at their own 23 yard line late in the third period. The Falcons started to move and things looked a lot more comfortable after they picked up two first downs and had the ball at the 47 before a five yard penalty set up a first and 15 at their own 42. Cain broke free around the left side on a keeper and had 12 yards being swarmed on by a host of tacklers simply refusing to go down, but in the process was stripped of the ball and Brian Bloode recovered the bobble at the New Prairie 46 for the third turnover in this quarter. A drive that produced the winning score started from here and in all a 12 play sustained effort covered the 54 yards with 11 running plays, all with Blake and Dudeck carrying, and one incomplete pass in the middle, getting enough yardage for Blake to carry in the final five yards for the score. Not only did this steady sustained effort put New Prairie ahead 14-12 after Feece’s extra point, but it chewed up a lot of clock and only 8:09 remained in the game. That caused the Falcons to gamble a little more trying for a first down on a fourth and 2 from their own 38, only to have Cain smeared trying to pass by a hard charging defensive line. The Cougars then used the Blake and Dudeck combination for a couple more first downs and a lot of clock before turning the bail over on i downs at the two yard line. The Falcons did manage to get away from the end zone with one first i down, but the desperation type play that was needed forced ani other fumble and the Cougars l covered it to ice it away 14-12. i The Cougars dominated the sec i ond half for two reasons. They put the ball in play 32 times to Glenn’s 24, but of those 32, all but three i were rushes with Blake and Dudeck t moving north and south behind a i hard charging line. Glenn had the i opportunities, but couldn't outlive
their own mistakes, the dreaded fumble that coughed up the ball four times in this half. After a very mediocre first half, Blake did end ( the night with 108 yards in 21 I carries. Cain was Glenn’s leading । ball carrier with 52 which included , a couple of big losses attempting to pass. This Friday night the Falcons move west to South Central for a , meaningless cluster game as Bremen has Cluster 50 sewed up. This could have been the game for the playoff spot had the overtime , game turned out differently a week earlier. However, a very competiI tive South Central team will be awaiting Glenn in this game, usu- ! ally a good one between the two schools.
